October 2016 v4 Development Summary

In October, v4 development covered the following areas:

- Completing the NDFD mapping algorithm implementation

- Adding the regional forecast, extended forecast, and almanac segments from the 9/1992 era. These are what are currently in v3.

- Implementing a graphics developer GUI for tweaking the placements of graphics on the new segments

- Beginning the work in porting over v3's word wrapping algorithm for the 36 hour forecast and local update segments

Finishing the mapping algorithm implementation paved the way for the forecast segments to be implemented (Regional Forecast, Extended Forecast, Travel Cities Forecast). Of these, the 9/1992 Regional Forecast and Extended forecast have been implemented.

With the addition of these new segments, it became apparent that the placements of things like weather icon positions, and text spacing, needed to be revisited. This requires the implementation of a GUI so this work can be done efficiently by the graphics developer (polarbear).

In October, about half of the dev work time was on the implementation of segments in v4, and the other half went towards the aforementioned GUI development.

Work in November will focus on implementing more segments in v4 such as the 36 hour forecast, Local Update, and Travel Cities Forecast, along with additional segments if time allows. The 36 hour forecast and local update segments will require a port of v3's extensive word wrapping algorithm which was developed to best recreate the 4000's word wrapping behavior. Each segment added will also require the implementation of the graphics development GUI for it.
