"Um... well, are you buying for a special occasion? What kind of... emotion are you trying to convey to the recipient? I… uh, sorry, still working on the customer service aspect…”
“You’re looking to celebrate a new beginning? Well, there are many flowers that you could gift something to celebrate a fresh start."
"Daffodils are popular for revival and renewal but they are an early spring flower... they are symbols for the end of long winters. Daisies are another, they are popular for weddings or anniversaries but can be delicate and won't last much longer as the fall chill rolls in. Hibiscus have more color and are a sign of good luck and fertility... Sunflowers are in abundance now at the end of the Summer leading into the fall and are quite resilient. I don't have any here but I could grow you a few Orchids if you're looking for something more exotic."
“What would I choose for symbolizing strengthening a bond? Well, there is the snapdragon. They're a symbol of strength, boldness and love. They're very colorful and fragrant as well as long lasting and easy to care for; very low maintenance."
"Oh yes, I have some snap dragons here. They are quite popular for floral arrangements as well as for landscaping. Do you have a color in mind?"
"My favorite color? I grew a beautiful hybrid this season that has a distinct white and pink ombre, it's been my best seller, very eye-catching. Is this for a bouquet or for a potted arrangement at home?"
"Do you have a pot in mind? I know of a potter who does handmade pieces in the market if you need something to pot it in."
"Sure, I could show you to their stall. Well... I hate to ask you to wait but I'm still open for a few more hours... I can close a little early or I can ask someone to watch things for me if you have plans."
"What else do I have? Well, I don't just have flowers, I sell seeds or budding plants for vegetables. Have you ever had a tomato or strawberry picked straight from the vine? Never fresher."
"Oh, no! Samples are always free. Tomato or Strawberry?"
"Not uncommon, sadly but nothing tastes better than homemade marinara sauce. And in fairness, raw tomato has a much different flavor. One of the vendors will make a wonderful freshly squeezed strawberry lemonade if you take some of these to them. I'm so terribly sorry, I never asked for your name."
"My name is Celine. I also have some succulents and other low-maintenance leafy plants for those who want some color in their homes but don't have time to upkeep flowers. My favorite is what is called the bunny ears cactus but I also have some Thimble Cacti and Fairy Castle Cacti for the more traditional looking cacti."
"Here are your cacti! Is there anything else I can interest you in today?"
"Of course, things usually quiet down for me around 5:00, the market closes at 6:00. Is that okay?"
"To something new and good, I’ll see you then."
"Hi! Yes, September is a busy month for birthdays with... the New Years and all. Yes, yes, I’m ready, sorry. Mr. Jamison, the potterer, is a very nice man, his parents were immigrants from Greece and his father was a sculptor for a claymation art studio."
"Oh! Sorry! Sorry. It gets busy here close to closing."
"Hold your hand? O-okay, so we don't lose each other..."
"Oh, um... no, I haven’t eaten, I usually go home and eat, after the market closes a lot of the vendors will gather and exchange perishables that won't last until the next sale date if it didn't sell."
"I-I suppose I could eat something."
"Hmm… favorite thing? Well, I don't know if you like breakfast for dinner but there is a burrito pop-up that makes a really good breakfast burrito."
"B-but... I didn't do anything..."
"Don't forget you paid me for all of that..."
"Plans? No, just tending to my rooftop garden at home. Fall plants are a little too big for non-farms. I spend a lot of the early fall sourcing local farms to sell baked goods here."
"Oh-um," Celine stammers, blushing. "I-Ive never done anything li-like, that... so casually."
"I... I think I'm misunderstanding... are... you asking me out on a date or... asking me to come home with you...?"
"I've never just... gone home with someone before… long considerate pause Is my place okay? We can walk from here, we can get your pot on the way. If you wanted to go that is... I don't really know how this works... is it too soon?"
"Return customer? Presumptuous... what if you don't like me?"
"You already like me, I like you too… Well, I admire your confidence in the face of the unknown. Are you allergic to cats? I just... have a cat. Who lives... with me."
"Oh, well. Okay. Mr. Jamison's Pottery is this way."
"All set, these will grow tall so if they start to sag just place a plant stake and tie the stem to it so it doesn't collapse under its weight, cut them back during the hottest part of the summer and they will bloom again in cooler weather. Please feel free to come back any time if you have any questions."
"No, I closed up earlier. Thank you very much for the offer."
"Sorry, you were offering quite the view Oh? What more do you have to offer? Why can’t I look at you like this in public? Then we should hurry to my place."
“We aren’t going to make it… I can’t wait."
“I’m what? I haven’t even gotten started yet. Be careful with your hands. Parts of my antlers are sharp.”
"Then take me."
“I can’t help but be loud…”
“You were amazing… They’re for you… either to remember me by or… a reason for you to come visit again. Goodbye.”
