I think a lot of people who claim to care about 'fairness' really don't, or at least of a myopic view of what fairness means in sports. For most people speaking publicly about this its just about eliminating trans people from public view. Bad faith actors pushing transphobia through a smokescreen of fairness. Even many of the good faith people land in the same place as them and say "trans ppl should go compete in a trans league" which takes absolutely nothing about fairness into account, as the spectrum in that 'league' is infinite and unfair by their own definition. Are the disagreements here actually about 'unfair biological advantages'? Michael Phelps has a lung capacity of twice that of the average human, which provides loads of other benefits than just holding your breath longer. Should he be eliminated from men's swimming due to his 'unfair biological advantage'? Should the NBA have a height restriction too? Wembanyama's pituitary gland has given him an unfair advantage by several metrics, no? Even if we take their arguments about certain biological elements being unfair (at the average) at face value, the same must be said to the cis athletes to identify their biological characteristics for fairness to actually be had. Audiences love and embrace the edge cases of someone being taller or faster or stronger in all sports, but are so inconsistent when it applies to trans people. In their idealist view of fairness within cis-only groups, fairness doesn't exist. From Gifted's perspective there is a "truth" being said that it is inherently unfair when trans-women compete. Would he say the same of the NBA? It's clear that being a foot taller than everyone is a massive advantage in several aspects of the game, but the players seems to actually disagree that it matters. If the NBA players are fine with the advantages of edge case exponentially taller/faster/stronger players, and the cis women of skating are overwhelmingly happy to compete with trans-women (many of which have had their advantages massively tapered with hormones), who are we to say that something is or is not 'inherently unfair'? Silverman and others would never ask these questions and just use the public outrage it as a vector for clout. I will not rag on Gifted much as his response is not "trans people are icky evil satanists" which seems to be one of the most common perspectives on this, but he said he doesn't have an answer. Sometimes the best answer to fairness, as the NBA has demonstrated, is to not have an answer and just play ball. Fairness is so much less black-and-white than its being presented. No one other than the Olympics has the money or interest in making several leagues/levels with extreme biomarker testing and stringent rules for fairness, and with the Phelps example, THEY are even loose with their definition of fairness and the guys just chose to swim and try to win, not whine for clout on PragerU like Silverman.

When you say "biologically male" or "biologically female", what do you mean? If you're talking about hormones, trans women (at least those doing HRT) are biologically women. I, a trans woman, have higher estrogen blood levels than the average cis woman, and lower testosterone levels than the average cis woman, so I am "biologically" a woman. After enough years on estrogen, I will have the same muscle and body fat distribution as the average cis woman and I will have the same skeletal structure and bone density as the average cis woman. If you are referring to genitals, I implore you to find ways in which having a penis makes it automatically easier to skate. Same with chromosomes. There certainly are differences in physical performance that trans women can have to cis women, but when it comes to skateboarding in particular, those aren't as relevant as they would be in the context of any other sport that can be more objectively scored. As it is, scoring skateboarding has been shown (by you) to be notoriously unfair and impossible to objectively do, and that is even the case among cis competitors. Until we see a trans woman sweeping the competition in street league (or even competing at all; there have been zero trans women in street league so far), I don't really think that it's fair to be complaining about how trans women are supposedly dominating women's skateboarding. Finally, it is important to note that a lot of this discourse surrounding trans women in womens competitions (specifically skateboarding) is a product of fear-mongering by the ultra-conservative shitheads that want to "eradicate transgenderism from public life entirely" (that is a direct quote from Michael Knowles), so it should be taken with a grain of salt. I know that you have many trans friends IRL, and I implore you to talk about this with them (perhaps even in a video) if they are willing. While I agree with some of the things you are saying, you should approach this topic with the nuance it deserves, and include the perspectives of skaters who actually have the lived experience of being trans.

I don't understand the acting like it's entirely theoretical that a trans woman could sweep the competition in a sport and prevent afab women from competing. It happened at least once with Lia Thomas. I'm not avoiding the topic at all and the take i'm arriving to isn't just because "the TERFS aren't gonna like it". I have my reasons that I stated above for why it COULD make the playing field uncompetitive for 99.9% of participants in the women's category if AMABs were able to compete. I'm just saying to stop giving bigotted enemies ammunition because IT WORKS. To the average normie they see a TERF giving a reasonable point and the trans rights activist reflexively rejecting it without solid cricism and that makes the entire queer liberation movement look invalid. We do need to keep gaining public support and that won't happen by recruiting into an ideological cult. As for trans women having aspirations in competitive athletics, there's not ever going to be a perfect solution that caters to everyone's sensitivities. Mine would be to make the Men's category an 'open category' which is not labeled for Men. And then the Women's category can stay the same I guess. You don't have to compete in the Men's category labeled in your inaccurate gender at least.

framing this as a fight between sports and queer rights is not fair at all. it's not just 'sportsball' nonsense for a lot of people including women. It can be a passion that women spend their lives on improving and trying to get to the top of their field. It can bring opportunities of scholarships and sponsor deals. Just tryna say it's important to a lot of people and as much as I want to support queer rights as much as I possibly can, there are limits when it comes to physical competition and the undeniable advantage that trans women hold (even after years of HRT). To me this kind of take just gives fuel to the TERF talking points of trans women encroaching on the rights of AFAB women. like part of the reason for womens sports is so that girls can grow up dreaming of being the next big star! but what if lebron wasnt such a big deal to everyone? still marginally famous maybe, but not headline news and not a multi millionaire (billionaire?)? high schools could just have co-ed teams, and sure, most of the people on the highest level team would be boys, but who cares? what if half of them were non-binary - would that change things? i wont play in the nba because i wasnt born a freak athlete - the same is true for 99% of people. competitive sports is already an edge case. full contact sports are def a challenge to this, but i dont really care lol. i like rugby and boxing and ufc (womens and mens) but if its between competitive fighting and queer rights, im taking queer rights (but i dont think we need to abolish combat sports, theres def a middle ground to be found somewhere). and for the record, i do think it's weird for trans women at this point to enter womens sports and destroy. like cmon - sometimes you cant have your cake and eat it too.

I really like the video Joa. Clunky and disjointed thoughts incoming: I am not super informed on this very nuanced, delicate, and complex subject, but I do not see transgender skaters currently dominating in any biological women’s space. In my personal view Arin and Efron seem to be near the top in terms of skill and ability for trans-women skaters currently and neither of them are the best of the best in Womens skateboarding. Women’s skateboarding is relatively new and still growing, and the best in that category are improving exponentially and very quickly. I believe most of the barriers women in skateboarding face have been more sociological than physical. As of right now, I haven’t heard of another instance besides that 2021 Red Bull comp where a trans skater took gold, and it feels like we’re extrapolating on that situation very heavily. So I do not see this as a large issue for women’s skateboarding at the moment. It’s good to stay within what is currently going on and not stray too far into hypotheticals of trans women taking over women’s competitive skateboarding. Especially when hypotheticals like that can harm the public view of trans women. I understand that biological differences exist, but I also think it might be more important to double down on the fact that Tim and Taylor are using that information in bad faith to push a sinister agenda and broader narrative that is outside the very small scope of competitive skateboarding. It’s pretty clear they do not care about making skateboarding more fair for all parties involved. Lastly Tim is kind of contradicting himself by shitting on the abilities of LGBTQ skate companies, while also saying how trans skaters are a huge looming threat to women’s skate comps because of their abilities. I’m with you it’s mostly an exposure thing. You can see that with Japan pumping serious money and effort into their female skaters and getting results. There is an avenue of skating that requires more physicality like jumping down a massive stair set but I think the vast majority of skating comes down to skill, precision, consistency, and fearlessness and I just don’t see how women wouldn’t be able to catch up in these things. Michael Phelps can be built for swimming and against his male peers there can still be a respectable level of competition. If you drop Michael Phelps into the women’s events it would be a blood bath. This is a good point, I think the problem is when the biological advantage appears “created” (not the best word I know). The line is blurry, but I think there is some merit to grouping biological similar groups especially in terms of development (hormones etc). The same reason it wouldn’t be perceived “fair” for a professional (adult) athlete to dominate a youth league.

Companies like There aren't making skate videos for cis guys. They are picking up queer skateboarders they see potential in and letting them do their thing, which makes content that is generally relatable and exciting to other queer skaters. Similar to Limosine or Sci-Fi Fantasy where the skating isn't necessarily at the level of a Nyjah part but it is exciting because the people doing the skating are pushing themselves and expressing themselves on a skateboard in often new and unique or at least genuine ways. It's just completely reductive to think that all cultural groups within skateboarding are going to move toward the same goal.

When you mentioned the transgender stuff it made me think a ton. I agree like physically Men are stronger than Women. Something that always sits on my mind is, "how does that translate to skill"? How does testosterone and muscle mass give you an edge in consistency, learning tricks, and what obstacles you are skating? I then started to think about Women's skating in America and it's kinda lagging behind. Every year Brazil, and Japan are pumping out Women skaters that are better than the last, and we (america) haven't really had any women rise to that level. Something that stood out to me is seeing the country Zambia in the olympics. Zambias riders didn't really have that "elite" skill. Zambia is pretty new to skateboarding it's only been within the last decade they've been able to get some support. (They've had people skating before then it's just been hard due to no places to purchase skate gear) I think Women in skateboarding have had a similar issue. Due to systemic misogyny Women weren't really allowed to do "men things" like skateboarding. Women being accepted to do stuff like skateboarding in America is pretty recent. Ten years ago seeing a girl at the park was rare now I see a girl skating almost every time I go to the park. I think the level will increase as we become more inclusive. I believe the average will catch up to mens and if you're trans won't matter. Until that point I do think people holding contests should look out for the skill level present. If a trans woman comes in and is a way higher level than the rest yeah like probably don't let her compete cause she's too good. On an elite level, idk. I do think there might need to be a seperation. People like Nyjah, Yuto, Sora, and Gustavo, aren't accidents. Nyjah was literally bred to be the best. Nyjah pushed skateboarding to a whole new level. As the bar raises Nyjah is able to keep up even being older. Nyjah will go down as one of the best skateboarders of all time, he is the pinnacle of what skateboarding has to offer. I feel it's because of him we've branched off into other areas because like "well that's insane what else can we do?" Idk if Women will be able to in a sense "catch up" to that cause Men's skateboarding is just really far ahead. Just my thoughts, it's hard to understand all this stuff and not step on toes but it really makes you think of something bigger and I appreciate that you open the conversation up. alright bonafide transgender here and, as instructed, here are my thoughts on trans people in sports. the whole topic fucking sucks on so many levels. going through a 'male' puberty does seem to give u a pretty undeniable edge in most sports on top of the social aspect. i've seen people suggest that feminizing hrt brings performance in line with cis women but even if this turns out to be true, i don't want trans women to only be seen as 'real women' if they're on medication for a whole host of hopefully obvious reasons. i've also seen the argument that, because michael phelps has weird bones or whatever, all sport is just genetics so we should just let any advantages athletes have be, but i don't think anyone would be happy if the women's league of a sport was disproportionately trans, including those trans people. the whole debate is full of noise from leftists with no sporting experience wanting to say the affirming thing and bigots with no sporting experience wanting to drag their culture war into every conversation. what's often missing is the perspective of the trans athletes that these arguments are centred around, taylor siverman gets second in a regional redbull contest and can convert that into grifter notoriety but i don't even know the name of the girl who came first. she gets her couple thousand in prize money and then gets hounded by pricks on instagram until they find someone new to fixate on. some say we should be catagorising sports by things like weight and height and do away with gender segregation but women's sports clearly have a really important role in inspiring the next generation of female competitors. i think a key thing to note is that the idea of changing your gender is so alien to alot of people that trans people get broadly conceptualised as delusional 'others' who act exclusively for their own benefit at everyone else's expense. we're not fucking stupid though, we know how it looks when trans women win things. i can't imagine lia thompson is having a fun time with it but professional swimming is her job, what else was she supposed to do? i'd really recommend watching that leo baker doc on netflix(?) if u haven't already. it's a little corny at times but the guy gets put through the wringer and u can really tell he knew transitioning would end his competitive career. that's what made his decision to drop out of the olympics to start glue important, not that it was the cool punk rock thing to do, but that he had literally no other choice. the most depressing thing is that there's no real reason for all this to be an issue in skateboarding. street league is already treated as little more than an entertaining sideshow by core skaters, let's just keep it that way. we have a pretty good intuition of when a skater is actually pushing themself so lets reward that. if we need competitions then let's see more mixed ability jam formats, maybe then there can be some progression in competitive skateboarding that isn't just learning the most meta competition tricks. sorry for the mucho texto but tl;dr it's a complex topic with no satisfying solution for anyone. the way it's looking is that individual trans people are just going to have to choose between keeping their sports careers or coming out of the closet. this obviously sucks but skateboarding can still be for everyone if we just look out for each other.
