I took a deep breath, rubbing the back of my neck. My life was already a circus on its best days, and adding demons, angels, and an anxious human classmate A.K.A demon hunter to the mix only made it a full-blown carnival. Still, I had to keep things moving forward.
“So,” I said, putting on my best ‘let’s-keep-things-light’ tone. “You guys came here to congratulate me?” I forced a cheerful smile, glancing between Lord Damon and Lilieth.
Lilieth smiled warmly, her earlier irritation seemingly melting away. “Yes, Damian. You’ve become a Nephilim now. That’s a huge deal, you know. It’s something we need to celebrate, right?”
Her genuine pride in her voice made my chest warm. No matter how weird things got, Lilieth always managed to make me feel like I wasn’t screwing everything up. I smiled back. “Thanks, Mom.”
Then, I gestured toward Puriel. “Also… it’s all thanks to her.” I tried to give her some credits, just to make her look better in my parents’ eyes.
Lord Damon’s smirk widened in a way that said he was about to ruin everything. “Why do you need to thank her? She simply only had to lie down and—”
“—And we did it with consent!” I cut him off quickly, my voice a bit louder than I intended. “She’s a nice girl. Angel, I mean.” I glanced at Puriel, who looked like she was torn between embarrassment and irritation. “And I… love her. So yeah.” I forced another awkward smile, my gaze silently begging Dad to drop it.
He frowned but didn’t push further, though he huffed loudly like he’d just been denied a grand performance. Small victories, I guess.
Lord Damon’s eyes flicked to the side, landing on Larry, who looked like a cat caught in the middle of a dogfight. Larry sat stiffly by my side, his shoulders practically up to his ears.
“And who’s this?” Lord Damon asked, his tone cold and vaguely threatening.
“This is Larry,” I said, patting Larry’s shoulder reassuringly. “He’s my classmate.”
“A demon hunter?” Lord Damon’s eyes narrowed suspiciously.
“Yeah, but he’s also a friend. He’s cool.”
Larry, realizing that he was now the center of attention, plastered on a shaky smile and gave a nervous little wave. “Greetings, good sir. I’m Larry. Nice to meet you.”
Dad didn’t respond immediately. He just stared at Larry with a look that could probably petrify a lesser man. Larry’s smile wavered.
“Uh… he won’t kill me, right?” Larry whispered out of the corner of his mouth, still smiling but clearly terrified.
“Maybe,” I whispered back. “As long as you don’t say anything rude.”
Larry gulped audibly, nodding. “Right. Got it.” Then, in a desperate attempt to be polite, he added, “I like your wings, by the way. Very aesthetic.”
To my surprise, Lord Damon actually seemed pleased. He leaned back slightly, a smug grin on his face. “Thank you. They’re made from the bones of my victims.”
“Oh,” Larry said, his voice a little higher-pitched than usual. “Yeah, cool. Good craftsmanship, I guess.”
I had to fight the urge to laugh. Poor Larry looked like he was seconds away from passing out.
Then, as if realizing he needed to sell himself as non-threatening, Larry blurted out, “Oh, and just so you know, I’m the one who’s been teaching Ethan to eat healthy all this time. So, like, you should thank me for that by… uh… not killing me.”
Lord Damon raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. “Really?”
“Uh, yeah,” Larry said, nodding rapidly. “Oh! And we’ve even showered together.”
I froze, my brain screeching to a halt. “When did I shower with you?”
“Two years ago, when we visited the public pool. Remember?”
“But we showered in different rooms.”
Larry shrugged. “Yeah. I never said we showered in the same room. Just that we showered at the same time.”
I groaned, dragging a hand down my face. “Stop confusing people.”
Lord Damon gave me a look that clearly said, ‘Are you sure he’s your friend?’
I sighed, nodding. “Yeah. He’s my friend.”
Larry, for some reason, decided to add, “More than friends.”
I blinked, turning to give him a look. “What?”
“What? We’re best friends, right? That’s more than friends.”
There was a brief pause before I reluctantly nodded. “Yeah… best friends.”
Larry grinned nervously, clearly feeling Dad’s deadly stare. He leaned in closer to me, whispering, “Dude, if he decides to kill me, you’re gonna step in, right?”
“I’ll… think about it,” I whispered back, trying not to laugh at the sheer absurdity of the situation.
Meanwhile, Puriel was watching the whole exchange with a mix of confusion and disbelief, while Lilieth just looked vaguely entertained. Lord Damon, for his part, seemed to be reevaluating his opinion of Larry.
“You’re an odd human,” Lord Damon finally said, his tone somewhere between curious and bemused.
Larry chuckled nervously. “Yeah, I get that a lot.”
I took a deep breath, trying to steer the conversation back to safer territory. “Okay, so now that introductions are out of the way, how about we focus on something more… cheerful?”
Lord Damon’s eyes flicked back to me. “Such as?”
“Well, for starters, how about not traumatizing my friend any further?”
Dad smirked but didn’t push further. Instead, he leaned back again, clearly enjoying himself way too much.
Lilieth, sensing that things were finally calming down, gave me another warm smile. “Regardless of all that, we really are proud of you, Damian.”
“Thanks, Mom,” I said again, feeling a bit more at ease.
Puriel, still tense but visibly calmer, nodded slightly in agreement. “Yes. You’ve come a long way.”
For a moment, there was a rare sense of peace in the room. Sure, it was fragile and could shatter at any second, but it was something.
Larry, still looking like he was ready to bolt at any moment, leaned closer to me again. “Dude, I swear your family is scarier than half the demons I’ve hunted.”
“Welcome to my life,” I muttered back, smiling faintly.
