“And?” Larry asked, tilting his head.
“And…” I turned to him, my expression serious. “Can you keep this from the association?”
Larry’s brows furrowed as he considered my request. After a moment, he nodded. “I will. But…” He paused, hesitating. “Although I can keep my mouth shut, I don’t think everyone else will. You know Nathan, right? He’s kinda… power-hungry now.”
I frowned at the mention of Nathan’s name. “Yeah, I’ve noticed. But what do you mean ‘now’?”
Larry shrugged, but there was tension in his posture. “It’s like he’s trying to prove something or… get something. He’s trying hard to—well, I don’t know—become more powerful than you?”
“From Ethan,” I asked, “or ‘the other one’?”
Larry gave me a knowing look. “The other one,” he said quietly, referring to my demonic identity. “Nathan already knows the vaccine doesn’t work on you. The Angel Creation project failed. And you should’ve seen how happy he was about it. He kept saying the senators should’ve listened to him when he claimed you were useless.”
I huffed. Nathan was always trying to undermine me. And now, with the Angel Creation project having failed, he had more ammunition to throw at me.
“He’s been pushing hard to gain influence,” Larry continued. “Trying to convince everyone he’s the better option.”
“And the senators?” I asked, my tone sharp.
Larry gave a bitter laugh. “They’re split. Some of them still think you’re valuable. But others? They’re leaning toward Nathan’s side. He’s been talking a lot about ‘real leadership’ and how he could’ve done things differently.”
I exhaled slowly, forcing myself to stay calm. “Great. Just what I needed—a wannabe powerful demon hunter with a God complex.”
Larry gave me a half-smile. “Hey, look on the bright side. At least he doesn’t have your kind of power.”
“Yeah,” I muttered darkly. “But give him time, and he’ll try something stupid. I can feel it.”
Larry didn’t argue, which only confirmed my suspicions. He knew as well as I did that Nathan wasn’t the type to back down easily. And if he saw an opportunity to gain more power—especially at my expense—he’d take it without hesitation.
“So,” Larry said after a moment, “you want me to keep an eye on him?”
“Yeah,” I said, nodding. “But don’t make it obvious. I don’t want him knowing we’re onto him.”
“Got it.” Larry gave me a thumbs-up, his grin returning. “Anything else, boss?”
I rolled my eyes at the nickname. “Just… keep me in the loop. And if anything changes, let me know immediately.”
Larry saluted mockingly. “Will do. Oh, and one more thing…”
I raised an eyebrow. “What?”
He grinned mischievously. “Next time you decide to get involved in a cult—accidentally or otherwise—maybe give me a heads-up first?”
I groaned, rubbing my temples. “I didn’t decide anything. It was your idea after all.”
“Sure, sure, details,” Larry said, still grinning. “Accidental cult leader. Got it.”
I shot him a glare, but there was no real heat behind it. “Just get moving,” I muttered. “I’ve got enough on my plate without your commentary.”
“Hey, you love my commentary,” Larry said as he started walking away, tossing a smug grin over his shoulder. “It keeps things interesting.”
I scoffed, but despite myself, a grin tugged at my lips. Larry had that effect—always keeping things light, even when everything around us was a complete mess. “So,” I said, walking alongside him, “what do you want to do after this?”
Larry shrugged lazily, sticking his hands in his pockets. “Dunno. I don’t have a patrol shift today, so I’m free. I can hang around for a bit.”
“Wanna come to my place?” I asked casually, my tone nonchalant, but a mischievous grin creeping onto my face.
Larry raised an eyebrow. “Oh? What’s going on?”
“I want to introduce you to someone,” I said, keeping my voice deliberately vague. I didn’t need to say it outright—I knew the moment Larry saw Puriel, he’d be in for a shock. An angel, alive and well, chilling in my house. Not to mention, she was literally the source of the holy power flowing through the vaccine in Larry’s veins. Maybe, just maybe, Puriel would have some advice to help Larry harness his powers better.
Larry narrowed his eyes suspiciously. “Is it a girl?”
I grinned wider. “Yeah, it’s a girl.”
Larry’s face lit up with excitement, and he immediately started tidying up his clothes, smoothing out imaginary wrinkles on his jacket. “Well, although I already have ‘Nana-chan’ in my life,” he said, “I’m always down to check out another girl.”
I rolled my eyes. “It’s not what you think.”
That made him pause mid-motion, his hand still adjusting his collar. “Wait… what do you mean?”
I shrugged, keeping my grin in place. “She’s more than a hundred years old.”
Larry froze, his expression quickly shifting to one of horror. “Dude,” he said, cringing like I’d just suggested something disgusting. “That’s not a girl—that’s a grandma!”
Ignoring his overreaction, I continued, “And she’s my partner.”
His cringe deepened, and he took a deliberate step back. “Wait, wait, wait,” he said, holding up both hands. “You’re telling me you’re sleeping with a grandma now? What is wrong with you? Is she from that retirement home we saved last month?”
I gave him a flat, unimpressed stare. “No.”
“But she’s over a hundred years old?” he pressed, his voice filled with disbelief. “How is this not super weird?”
I smirked. “You’ll see when we get there.”
Larry groaned, clearly regretting his decision to tag along. “Man, this better not be some ancient lady knitting sweaters in a rocking chair.”
“Oh, don’t worry,” I said, barely containing my amusement. “She’s way more interesting than that,” I stated.
Larry muttered something under his breath but didn’t argue further. We walked in relative silence for a few minutes.
“You’re not gonna tell me anything else, huh?” Larry finally asked, breaking the silence.
