The Incubus System Chapter 1104. Not Playing Around

The Incubus System Chapter 1104. Not Playing Around

‘Resonates?’ I thought, almost laughing at the irony. ‘Lady, I am the Great Demon, and I have no idea what I’m supposed to be resonating with.’

But there was something in her words that stopped me from making a sarcastic comment. She wasn’t faking this. She wasn’t trying to manipulate me or sell me something. She truly believed in the Great Demon and the ideals she’d built around him. And as ridiculous as it was, I couldn’t help but feel a strange mix of guilt and responsibility.

I didn’t answer her directly. I just… fell silent. The whole thing had started as something absurd and borderline comical, but hearing her talk like this, seeing the sincerity in her face—even if it was hidden behind that blindfold—it hit differently. It wasn’t just some random cult trying to stir trouble. To these people, this was real. They were clinging to something that gave them hope in a world that had probably failed them one too many times.

But at the same time, that’s exactly what made it dangerous. I felt worry gnawing at the back of my mind. ‘What if the government gets wind of this and decides it’s a threat?’ I thought. ‘What if the demon hunter association labels them as enemies?’

History had a way of repeating itself. I knew how this kind of thing played out—back in the medieval era, cults like this were often deemed heretical. The result? Massacres. Entire groups wiped out in the name of “order.” And while we were living in a so-called modern world now, I wasn’t naive enough to believe that kind of thing couldn’t happen again.

Without realizing it, my hands had grown tense, and I quickly pulled them away from hers. “Stop it,” I said, the words slipping out before I could stop them.

She tilted her head slightly, her expression still calm but clearly confused. “What do you mean?”

I pressed my lips together, realizing I’d slipped up. Right, I thought. ‘I forgot I’m in my human form right now. She doesn’t know who I really am.’

I forced myself to put on a more neutral, innocent expression. “I mean…” I said slowly, trying to recover, “I’ll think about it later. I… I still have a lot of hesitation.”

She didn’t push me, thankfully. Instead, she gave me a gentle smile and nodded. “Tell me about it,” she said, her voice soft, inviting me to share more.

I shook my head slightly, keeping my expression guarded. “I can’t,” I said quietly. “But… Thank you. Thank you for giving me the chance to talk.”

She was silent for a moment, clearly thinking over my words. Then, after what felt like an eternity, she smiled again. “Okay,” she said. “You can come to me or Kevin whenever you’re ready. We’re always here to listen.”

I nodded, offering a faint, forced smile in return. “Thanks,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Without waiting for a response, I turned and started walking toward the exit. I didn’t look back—I couldn’t. My mind was racing too fast, tangled with too many conflicting emotions. I needed to get out of there before I said or did something stupid.

The cool air outside hit me like a wave of relief as I stepped through the door. I took a deep breath, trying to clear my head. ‘How did this even become my problem?’

Before I could dwell on it too much, I heard quick footsteps behind me. I glanced over my shoulder just in time to see Larry catching up to me, his expression a mix of concern and curiosity.

“Hey,” he said, falling into step beside me. “What happened back there? You left in a hurry. You even forgot about me and Kevin.”

I shrugged, shoving my hands into my pockets. “Nothing. Just… needed some air.”

Larry gave me a skeptical look. “Come on, man. You looked like you were ready to bolt. Did she freak you out or something?”

“No,” I said quickly, maybe a little too quickly. “It’s not that.”

Larry didn’t say anything for a moment, just watching me like he was trying to figure something out. “Alright,” he said eventually, “but you know, you can talk to me, right? Whatever’s going on in that head of yours, I’m here.”

I sighed, running a hand through my hair. “It’s… complicated,” I admitted. “This whole thing—it’s way more serious than I thought. These people really believe in this Great Demon stuff. They’re not just playing around.”

Larry nodded slowly. “Yeah, I kinda got that vibe too.”

“And that’s what worries me,” I continued. “If this gets too big, too visible, it’s only a matter of time before someone sees it as a threat. And when that happens, these people are going to be in serious danger.”

Larry nodded, his expression growing more serious. “True. Not to mention even a TV station made this cult their news highlight.”

I grunted, pinching the bridge of my nose. “Right, that too,” I muttered. “And, ironically, the one who made that news? She’s one of my servants.”

Larry stopped in his tracks, turning to me with a cringing expression. “Seriously?!”

“Yeah,” I sighed. “And to make it worse, she did it because of my order. Well, half of my order. I wanted a private investigation, but she took it upon herself to turn it into a public broadcast. Great. Just great.”

Larry’s jaw dropped. “Dude… you’ve got a lot of problems.”

I nodded again, my tone dripping with irony. “Yeah, and I’m sick of it. But here I am.”

Larry patted my shoulder, his usual grin replaced by something faintly sympathetic. “At least you’ve got power,” he said, trying to sound reassuring.

I chuckled bitterly, shaking my head. “Actually, all these troubles came to me because I have power.”

Larry winced, nodding in agreement. “Kinda right. So, what’s your plan now?”

I exhaled deeply, thinking it over. “First, I’m going to ask my servant to stop the investigation—at least publicly. I need to keep things under wraps for now.”
