I leaned over to Larry. “This is insane,” I whispered. “I can’t believe people actually buy into this.”
Larry grinned, his voice equally low. “Hey, it’s free entertainment. Just sit back and enjoy the show.”
The “show” turned out to be a bizarre mix of motivational speech, vague promises of salvation, and an overwhelming dose of awkward enthusiasm. Kevin stood proudly at the podium, radiating confidence like he was about to change the world. Behind him loomed a massive statue of… me.
Well, not me exactly. It was supposed to be the Great Demon, but the thing was an insult to my demon lord form. The proportions were off, the expression was all wrong, and the horns looked more like bent garden hoses. If anything, it looked like the dollar-store knock off version of me. I crossed my arms, biting back the urge to complain. ‘Really?’ I thought. ‘I’m way more handsome than that.’
Larry, on the other hand, was having the time of his life. He grinned like a kid at a carnival, clearly enjoying my misery. Meanwhile, I sat slumped in my chair, wearing the deadest of dead fish faces that screamed, ‘Nope. Nope. Nope.’
Kevin, oblivious to my internal turmoil, began his speech. “Friends!” he called out, spreading his arms dramatically. “Today, we have the honor of welcoming two very special guests. Two individuals who embody the strength and potential of the Great Demon’s teachings!”
Larry perked up, nudging me with his elbow. “Hear that?” he whispered. “We’re special.”
I shot him a side-eye glare. “I’ll show you special,” I muttered darkly.
Kevin continued, gesturing toward us. “Everyone, please give a warm welcome to Ethan and Larry!”
The small crowd erupted into applause, most of it overly enthusiastic. A group of young women near the front waved at me like I was a rock star. Larry gave them a friendly nod, while I just stared blankly ahead, hoping they’d stop.
Spoiler alert… They didn’t.
A few of the girls stood up and approached me. “Hi!” one of them said, her voice sugary sweet. “We’re so honored to have you here.”
“Uh, thanks,” I replied, forcing a smile that probably looked more like a grimace.
Another girl chimed in, her eyes practically sparkling. “It’s so inspiring to meet someone who wants to understand the teachings of the Great Demon.”
I blinked, my brain grinding to a halt. ‘Teachings?’ I thought. ‘What teachings?’
I resisted the urge to facepalm. The only “teaching” I’d ever done—if you could even call it that—was that one time I did a public play with Ivy. It was an AoE skill to kill demons, not a philosophy lesson! But now, apparently, it had evolved into a full-blown doctrine.
“That’s… nice,” I said awkwardly, trying to edge away without being rude.
The girls didn’t take the hint. “You must be so wise,” one of them said earnestly. “What’s your favorite teaching of the Great Demon?”
Larry nearly choked on his laugh, quickly turning it into a cough. I shot him a glare before turning back to the girl. “Uh…” I stalled, my brain scrambling for something that wouldn’t sound completely ridiculous. “I think… All the teachings are important. You know, balance and… uh… stuff.”
They nodded enthusiastically, as if I’d just shared the secret to life itself. “That’s so true,” one of them said. “Balance is everything.”
Larry couldn’t hold back anymore. He leaned closer, his grin practically splitting his face. “Balance, huh?” he whispered. “Solid answer, buddy. Really profound.”
“Shut up,” I muttered through gritted teeth.
Kevin’s voice boomed from the podium, pulling my attention back. “And let us not forget the Great Demon’s most important lesson,” he said, his tone reverent. “To embrace our true selves and rise above the corruption of the world.”
I fought the urge to roll my eyes so hard they’d get stuck in the back of my head. ‘True selves? Rise above corruption?’ Did I accidentally write a self-help book and forget about it? Because this guy was quoting me like I’d been dropping wisdom bombs all over the place.
Larry leaned over, whispering with a smirk. “You should start charging royalties for this.”
“Don’t tempt me,” I muttered, keeping my gaze locked on Kevin as he raised his hands dramatically.
“And now,” Kevin announced, his voice dripping with excitement, “we have the incredible honor of welcoming a very special guest. Someone from overseas. The high priestess of the Great Demon’s teachings.”
Larry straightened up, clearly intrigued. “Oh, this should be good.”
The room fell into a hush as the door opened, and in walked a girl who could only be described as elegance personified. Her steps were graceful, her movements deliberate, and the way the crowd practically parted for her felt more choreographed than natural. She wore a flowing, ornate dress, the kind that screamed an important religious figure—or at least someone who wanted them to think she was. And she wore a thin blindfold to cover her eyes.
I knew I should assume something was wrong with her eyes, but after some sexy moments with Pearl, my thoughts wandered elsewhere.
But as she approached the podium, something tugged at the back of my mind. She looked… familiar. Too familiar. My brows furrowed as I tried to place her face. ‘Where have I seen her before?’
Larry, sitting beside me, frowned as well, his head tilting slightly. “I swear I’ve seen her on TV,” he murmured, his voice low.
“TV?” I repeated, my brain kicking into overdrive. And then it hit me like a brick to the face. ‘Her!’ I’d seen her before. Not on TV—well, maybe there too—but in real life. She was that idol. The one who tried to jump off a building before I stepped in and saved her.
I leaned back in my chair, exhaling sharply through my nose. ‘This just got complicated.’
Larry caught my reaction, his eyes narrowing. “Wait,” he said, leaning closer. “You know her?”
