But there was another thing bothering me—something bigger. The whole Great Demon cult situation had been nagging at the back of my mind, and the timing of Kevin’s random invitation wasn’t helping. It reminded me of someone I should’ve followed up with. Elenna.
Elenna was supposed to be feeding me information about that cult. Yet, so far? Radio silence. My fingers flew over the keyboard as I typed out a message.
Me: Hey, Elenna. Any updates on that cult situation?
I hit send and stared at the screen for a moment, half-expecting her to respond immediately. When nothing happened, I let out a frustrated sigh and shoved the phone back into my pocket.
“Everything alright?” Puriel asked, her voice tinged with concern.
“Yeah,” I said, though my tone made it clear I wasn’t entirely convinced. “Just trying to get some intel on this whole cult mess. Supposedly, I’ve got people looking into it.”
Puriel tilted her head, her golden hair falling over one shoulder. “You have intel?” she asked, her voice curious. “So, she’s kind of like your spy?”
I let out a dry laugh, shaking my head. “Uh, not exactly,” I said, scratching the back of my neck. “She’s… my servant.”
Her expression shifted instantly, her eyes narrowing as her lips pressed into a flat line. “So, she’s someone you’ve slept with,” she said, her tone making it sound more like a statement than a question.
I opened my mouth to deny it, but the words stuck. “Well… yeah,” I admitted. “I’m still sleeping with her, actually. But—”
Before I could finish, Puriel’s flat stare intensified, and I swear I could feel the judgment radiating off her in waves. “Ethan,” she said slowly, “how many women are you sleeping with?”
“That’s not the point!” I said quickly, holding up a hand to stop her. “Some of my women are busier than others. They’ve got jobs—real jobs—and some take on missions I give them. It’s not like they’re just hanging around waiting for me.”
She crossed her arms, her expression unimpressed. “So, you’re using them to do your work for you?”
I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. “No,” I said firmly. “I don’t use them. They’re my partners. They help me because they want to, not because I’m forcing them.”
Puriel raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. “And what exactly are these ‘missions’ you give them?”
I leaned back on the bed, exhaling slowly as I considered how much to tell her. “Look,” I started, “my position here isn’t exactly stable. Humans consider me dangerous—some even see me as an enemy. Sure, there are people who think I’m a savior, but the governments and higher-ups? They don’t like anyone who’s more powerful than them.”
“And demons?” she asked, her tone neutral but probing.
“Wild demons in this realm?” I said with a dry laugh. “Yeah, they hate me too. To them, I’m either a threat or a nuisance. So yeah, I need to build influence here if I want to make sure my life—and the lives of the people I care about—stay safe.”
Puriel’s gaze softened slightly, her arms uncrossing. “It seems like you have a hard life after you turned into a demon,” she said quietly.
I smiled faintly, shaking my head. “Not really,” I said. “It’s better than being powerless. At least now, I’m not a pawn anymore. But yeah, if I want a peaceful life, I have to develop my influence in the human realm. Some humans… they’re too greedy to understand that not everything can be theirs. And some are too prideful to accept that they have limits.”
She nodded slowly, her eyes thoughtful. “I get it,” she said. Then, after a moment, she glanced at me again. “But sleeping with a lot of women and using them as tools to investigate things… I don’t know if I should call that smart or something else.”
I shot her a flat stare. “Hey,” I said, my tone defensive. “I don’t use them as tools, okay? They’re my partners. There’s a difference.”
She tilted her head, a small smirk playing on her lips. “Partners you sleep with?”
“Yes,” I said firmly. “Partners I sleep with. And trust. And care about. They’re not just some disposable assets.”
She leaned back slightly, still smirking. “Interesting approach to leadership,” she said lightly. “I suppose it works for you.”
I shrugged, leaning against the edge of the bed with a casual grin. “Well, I’m an incubus,” I said, my tone nonchalant. “I use my brain and my dick. It’s a nice combo.”
Puriel immediately cringed, her face twisting in disgust. “Ugh,” she muttered, glaring at me like I’d just ruined her day. “Did you really have to say that?”
“Hey,” I said, holding up my hands in mock innocence, “you can’t complain about it. You’re part of the team now.”
I leaned in slightly, a mischievous smirk spreading across my lips. “Besides,” I added, lowering my voice just a touch, “you’ve tasted my cock and got addicted to it, right?”
Her face turned beet red in an instant, her wings twitching in pure mortification. “I-I am not!” she stammered, gripping the mug in her hands like it was a lifeline.
I opened my mouth to tease her further, but the sharp buzz of my phone vibrating in my pocket interrupted me. With a sigh, I fished it out, glancing at the screen. Elenna.
“Hang on,” I said to Puriel, holding up a finger as I accepted the call. “Hey, Elenna.”
“Ethan,” Elenna’s familiar voice came through the speaker, her tone brisk but teasing. “Didn’t I already tell you about that cult?”
I frowned, leaning back against the bedframe. “When?” I asked, genuinely confused.
Elenna let out an exaggerated sigh. “I did. Don’t you watch TV? I put it out there already. There was a whole news highlight about it. Don’t you have a TV at home?”
I stared at the ceiling, resisting the urge to groan. “I mean,” I said slowly, pinching the bridge of my nose, “you didn’t report it to me personally. As in, you know, privately.”
