"Fair enough," I said, pushing off the desk and closing the distance between us. "But look at it this way—every step I take, every move I make, it’s all part of getting us closer to the endgame. And when that day comes… well, let’s just say you’ll have my undivided attention."
Her pout deepened, but I could see the flicker of a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "You’d better mean that," she said, her tone lighter now.
"I do," I said, leaning in close enough to feel her breath against my skin. "Now, are you going to keep sulking, or are you going to enjoy the fact that I’m here right now?"
She rolled her eyes but finally let the smile break through. "Fine," she said, stepping closer and wrapping her arms around my neck. "But you owe me, big time."
"Always," I said, my voice low and warm as I tilted her chin up and kissed her. Ivy melted into me, her hands trailing down my neck, pulling me closer.
Then, of course, reality had to ruin the moment.
A sharp ding came from the desk, one of my laptops lighting up with a notification. A reminder-type 'ding'.
Great. Perfect timing, as always.
Without breaking the kiss, one of my tentacles appeared, sliding out smoothly to handle the interruption before my idiotic double could get anywhere near it. The tentacle snaked over to the laptop, flipping it around to face me.
I opened one eye, glancing at the screen, but the moment I caught sight of the notification, the kiss ended abruptly.
"What the hell is this?" I muttered, my brow furrowing as I leaned forward to read.
Ivy, still pressed against me, raised an eyebrow. "What happened?"
My frown deepened as I read the glaring alarm on the screen:
“Grand Court of Royals – Beginning in 10 Minutes.”
"The Grand Court?" I said aloud, more to myself than anyone else. "What’s going on? That’s not something they hold without a damn good reason. Big problems. Royal demon-level problems. But why the hell is no one informing me about this in the mortal realm?"
"And," I continued, my voice rising in frustration, "why the hell is something this important happening on Asmo’s birthday of all days? That’s not just bad timing—that’s suspicious as hell."
Ivy’s lips parted slightly as if she just remembered something, and she glanced away, scratching the back of her neck. "Oh," she said hesitantly, "I forgot to mention… there’s been a little… problem involving Ars Goetia."
I turned my full attention to her, the frustration in my chest growing. "What?!" I barked. "And why didn’t anyone tell me this earlier?!"
Ivy flinched slightly at the sharpness of my tone but quickly recovered, her hands lifting in a placating gesture. "Well… it’s not exactly a big problem. More like… a nuisance."
I glanced over at my double, who, despite the rising tension in the room, was perched on a chair in the corner, twerking in his formal uniform. The sight was so absurd that for a split second, I forgot my anger. Then it hit me.
"You’ve got to be kidding me," I said, pinching the bridge of my nose. "And you guys are planning to let him attend the Grand Court?!"
I gestured toward my double with an exasperated wave of my hand. He froze mid-twerk, giving me an innocent, almost guilty look as if he’d been caught doing something forbidden—which, in this case, he sort of had.
Ivy cringed, her face twisting into a mix of embarrassment and guilt. "How should I say this…" she started, hesitating as if trying to find the least painful way to break the news. "This is an important court but also… kind of useless."
"Useless?!" I repeated, throwing my arms up in disbelief. "Ivy, it’s the Grand Court! It’s not some tea party where the royals sit around and talk about their latest hobbies! If it’s being called, it’s because something serious is going on!"
She crossed her arms defensively, her jaw tightening. "I know that," she said sharply. "But trust me, this time… isn’t important."
I arched a brow, crossing my arms as I leaned back against my desk. "You’ve said that twice now. It’s starting to sound like you’re stalling. Explain what the hell happened."
She winced slightly, shifting her weight from one foot to the other before finally letting out a sigh. "Fine," she said, running a hand through her hair. "This case… is about a lust triangle."
I stared at her blankly, processing the words, hoping I’d misheard. "A what?"
She avoided my gaze, suddenly very interested in the floor. "A lust triangle," she repeated, her voice quieter this time. If mortals struggle with love triangles, demons and devils deal with lust triangles—and it is even messier when the players are on equal footing.
I pinched the bridge of my nose, exhaling slowly. "Between Ars Goetia? You’re telling me the Grand Court was called because of some soap opera bullshit between demons?"
Ivy nodded hesitantly, glancing up at me like she was bracing for an explosion.
"Oh, for the sake of myself," I groaned, pushing off the desk and pacing the room. My tentacles twitched in agitation, coiling and uncoiling behind me. "This is what they’re dragging us into? A lust triangle? Between who, exactly?"
"Well," she started, her voice cautious, "you know how Lord Berith and Lady Gremory have had that… thing for centuries?"
"Don’t remind me," I muttered, waving a hand dismissively. "Their constant flirting is bad enough without adding whatever this is."
"Yeah, well, apparently Lord Belial got involved."
I stopped pacing, turning to stare at her, my jaw dropping slightly. "Belial?" I repeated. "As in Belial, Belial? The guy who doesn’t care about anything except his cursed daggers collection and occasionally designing new torture devices for fun?"
"Yup," Ivy said, popping the “p” for emphasis.
I blinked, trying to piece together how that made any sense. "And they called the Grand Court for this?"
"It gets better," Ivy said, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "Because all lords of the seven sins have to attend the court. Every. Single. One. Oh, and His Majesty will preside over it himself."
