Penelope’s expression hardened, a defiant spark in her gaze as she turned back to me. “So, what now?” she demanded, her voice steady but laced with an undercurrent of fear and uncertainty. “Are we supposed to just… accept this? Pretend that everything is fine?”
I leaned forward, my gaze unwavering as I studied the two of them. They were fierce, loyal to their mother, protective even in their confusion and anger. I could see the potential in them. A faint smile tugged at the corners of my lips.
“Why pretend?” I asked, my tone calm, almost gentle. “You don’t have to accept anything you’re not ready to. But I can offer you something far more valuable than mere acceptance.”
They exchanged wary glances, both of them watching me with a mixture of suspicion and curiosity. I could see the conflict in their eyes.
“What do you mean?” Katrina asked, her voice laced with caution. She was the more reserved of the two, but there was a fierce determination in her gaze.
I leaned back, crossing one leg over the other, letting my gaze shift between them. “You’re both strong. Stronger than most mortals I’ve encountered. And I can see that you care deeply for your mother.” I paused. “So, I’m offering you a choice. Stand by her side… by my side. Pledge your loyalty to me, and I will make you my servants, just as your mother has chosen to be.”
Their expressions shifted, shock and confusion flaring in their eyes. Penelope’s jaw tightened, her fists clenched at her sides, and Katrina’s gaze hardened, the flicker of defiance back in her eyes.
“You want us to serve you?” Penelope’s voice was cold, almost mocking, but I could see the hint of uncertainty lurking beneath her defiance. “What makes you think we’d ever agree to that?”
Red’s gaze shifted to her daughters, a faint smile playing on her lips. “Because he can offer you something you’ve never even dreamed of. Power, knowledge, a purpose beyond anything you’ve known. He is not like the others.”
Katrina’s gaze shifted between me, Red, and Penelope. Her jaw clenched as she turned to her mother, her voice low and laced with frustration.
"Mother… Why would you ask us to join him? We’re not like you,” Katrina said, the words almost a whisper, as if saying them any louder would break the control she held over her emotions. “You’ve always protected us, taught us to be strong on our own. But this… this feels like you’re giving us away.”
Red sighed, her eyes softening as she looked at her daughters. “I am not giving you away, Katrina. I am offering you a chance. A chance to be stronger, to understand the world beyond what you’ve seen so far. This world isn’t kind to people like us. With him, you’ll be safe, powerful… respected.”
Penelope huffed, crossing her arms as she glared at me with a mixture of skepticism and defiance. “Respected? We’re already powerful, Mother. We’ve made it this far without him. Besides, it's all in the past. The vampire hunt is all in the past. The war is over. We don’t need to be his… servants to prove ourselves.” She shot a sharp glance at me, daring me to contradict her.
Red turned to Penelope, her voice gentle but firm. “You don’t understand, Penelope. This isn’t just about power or status. It’s about purpose, about being part of something larger.”
Katrina’s eyes narrowed, and she took a step closer to her mother, her voice tinged with desperation. “But why now? Why tell us all of this, why… ask us to serve him? Why can’t we stay as we are?”
Penelope’s gaze flickered with doubt, though her stance remained defiant. “You’re asking us to trust a stranger—a stranger who calls himself the ‘Lord of Wrath,’ no less. How are we supposed to know he’s worth that trust?”
I watched their exchange. They were hesitant, and I could understand their reluctance. Red’s loyalty to me ran deep, but for her daughters, this was a leap into the unknown, a surrender of control they weren’t prepared for. I leaned forward, considering my words carefully, before I spoke.
"Enough of this! I don’t believe in unequal exchanges too, so I understand your hesitation,” I said, my tone calm, almost conversational. “For me… everything has a price.” I paused, watching their eyes, ensuring I had their full attention before continuing. “How about this…”
Slowly, I raised my wrist, extending it to Red, my gaze steady. Her eyes widened slightly, a flicker of something—desire, perhaps—crossing her face, though she quickly masked it.
“If you can resist my blood,” I said, my voice quiet yet carrying an undeniable weight, “I will withdraw my offer. I’ll walk away, and this conversation will never have happened.” I let the challenge hang . “But if you’re interested… if my blood calls to you, then you must agree to be mine.”
Penelope’s eyes widened, and she looked to her mother, clearly unsettled. “You can't be serious.”
Katrina scoffed, crossing her arms. “What kind of challenge is that?” she asked, a hint of sarcasm in her tone. “Do you think we’re weak enough to lose control over something as trivial as that?”
Penelope nodded, her eyes narrowing as she held my gaze with fierce determination. “Do you think we can’t control ourselves? You underestimate us, Mr. Lord of Wrath. We’ve been controlling ourselves since our first meeting with you, and we don’t need your permission to do it now.” She lifted her chin, her voice laced with mock confidence. “So, please, don’t be too full of yourself.”
I smiled, a slow, casual grin that barely concealed the anticipation thrumming beneath the surface. “Let’s see about that, then.”
I turned to Red, who was watching me with a calm intensity. She understood the test, understood that this was as much about her own loyalty as it was about proving something to her daughters.
“Red,” I murmured, my voice low, a command as much as an invitation.
