Puriel's PoV
“You look… perfect,” he said simply, his voice warm, yet restrained.
She felt her cheeks heat up, and she smiled shyly. “Thank you,” she murmured, her voice soft, almost timid. She wished she had a mirror to see how she looked in the dress he’d chosen, but honestly, this was enough. The way he was looking at her, a quiet admiration in his eyes—it made her feel beautiful in a way she hadn’t felt in centuries.
Ethan smirked and leaned a little closer to her, his eyes glinting mischievously. “You know… this makes me want to pounce on you right away,” he teased, his voice low.
Puriel’s cheeks burned, and in an instant, she covered her body with her arms, her wings fluttering in surprise. Her reaction was met with a burst of laughter from Ethan.
“I’m just kidding,” he said, chuckling as he straightened up, but the playful glint in his eyes remained. He seemed to be enjoying the effect he had on her, and as much as she tried to stay composed, she couldn’t help but smile at his teasing.
Once his laughter faded, he moved to her side, settling onto the blanket beside her. She relaxed and lowered her arms, her gaze following his as they both turned to the sky, watching the stars as they began to brighten against the deepening night. The silence was comfortable.
The stars stretched out above them, so endless and vast that it stirred something in her, a faint longing for home. She had spent centuries in isolation, away from the world, and now, here she was, so far from the celestial realm, with a demon lord by her side. It was a scene she never could have imagined. And yet, despite the strange circumstances, she felt at peace.
“Sorry,” Ethan said suddenly, his voice softer, more serious than before.
Puriel glanced over at him, surprised by the sudden change in his tone. “For what?”
He paused, his gaze fixed on the stars. “I can only do this,” he admitted, his voice tinged with something she couldn’t quite place. “I didn’t know what else to come up with. An angel and a demon lord… we can’t exactly go on normal dates anywhere, you know?”
She watched him, noticing the small furrow in his brow, the way he seemed almost frustrated with himself. “I tried to come up with something better, something that’d feel… I don’t know, right. But nothing felt like enough.” He glanced at her, his eyes searching hers. “If you’re bored, just tell me. I’ll come up with something else.”
A soft smile touched her lips, and she reached out, her hand resting gently on his arm. “No, I’m not bored,” she assured him, her voice steady. “This is more than I expected. More than enough, really.”
Ethan looked at her, his expression softening.
“I mean it,” she continued, her gaze returning to the stars. “I demanded this just for jokes. But you did. You thought of everything, even the flowers.” She paused, her voice dropping to a whisper. “I never thought anyone would do something like this for me.”
They sat in silence again. She didn’t know how to explain it, but there was a vulnerability in this moment.
He cleared his throat, breaking the quiet. “Well,” he muttered, trying to play off his sincerity, “don’t go thinking I’ve gone soft or anything. I’m still a Demon Lord, you know.”
Puriel chuckled, the sound light and genuine. “I wouldn’t dare,” she replied, her tone teasing. “But… Thank you. For all of this.”
Ethan looked at her, his gaze intense yet somehow softened by the night around them. “Anytime,” he said, his voice low. And for a moment, she could almost believe that he meant it—that he’d do anything to make her feel happy, to make her feel at home, even if this world was as foreign to her as it was to him.
‘He is still human at heart, after all,’ she thought, the realization dawning on her as she looked at him, truly looking at him, as if seeing past the exterior of a demon lord into something more familiar, more human.
Without thinking, she extended her hand toward him, her palm hovering near his face before she gently pressed it to his cheek. His skin was warm against her hand, his breath stilling at the touch as he flicked his gaze toward her hand in surprise. For a moment, she thought he might pull away, but then his eyes met hers, steady, searching, as if he, too, was grappling with something he couldn’t quite name.
The question slipped out before she could stop herself. “What is love, Ethan?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. She hadn’t meant to ask it out loud, hadn’t meant to reveal so much. But the question had been with her for so long, unanswered and aching, ever since her sister had chosen to remain in the human world with Lord Xenos, leaving behind everything she’d known.
Ethan’s gaze didn’t waver, but instead of answering, he raised a brow and countered, “Why are you asking an incubus like me?” His voice held a hint of irony, a small smirk tugging at the corners of his lips, though his eyes remained thoughtful. “Out of all the beings you could ask about love, you choose the one designed for seduction and mischief.”
Puriel let out a small, nervous laugh, lowering her hand from his cheek but keeping her gaze steady. She hesitated, the words catching in her throat as she tried to find a way to explain. “I… I don’t know,” she admitted softly, glancing away for a moment. But then her eyes drifted back to him, resolute. “I suppose… because I know, deep down, there’s still a part of you that’s still a human. I’ve seen it. You still feel things, things that go beyond the nature of a demon.” She paused, her voice growing quieter. “And I know demons can feel love too. If they couldn’t…” She took a shaky breath. “Lord Xenos would never have fought so desperately to be with my sister.”
