Puriel's PoV
“Well, yeah,” he replied, his tone casual, but she could tell by the way he was avoiding her eyes that he was a little self-conscious. “Thought you’d enjoy some stargazing. You know, after… everything.” He gestured vaguely, as if that summed up the past centuries she’d spent trapped in a crystal.
Puriel felt a strange warmth spreading through her chest, an unexpected sense of gratitude mingled with something she couldn’t quite name. “You… did all this for me?” Her voice was barely a whisper, but she could see him nod, his gaze finally meeting hers, and there was a quiet honesty there that made her heart race.
“Well, yeah,” he said, shrugging as if it was no big deal. But she could see past the nonchalance. For a demon lord—a creature of darkness and chaos—to go to this trouble for her, an angel, it spoke volumes. And it confused her. She had spent so long thinking of him as just the cynical, somewhat grumpy demon she’d known in the dream world. But here, now, he was… different. Softer, in a way she hadn’t expected.
“You’re not… you’re not like how I thought you were,” she murmured, more to herself than to Ethan. She felt a bit embarrassed, realizing just how much her view of him had changed in such a short time.
Ethan, sitting beside her on the bed, gave her a flat stare. “I heard that. I already told you why I was grumpy in the dream world, remember?”
Puriel’s face softened, a flicker of guilt in her expression. “Yeah, I remember,” she replied, lowering her gaze. She felt the guilt, reminded of how she’d so often pulled him into her dream world, disrupting his sleep with her endless stories.
Ethan’s voice broke into her thoughts, softer than before. “Besides… I told you, didn’t I? That I’d surprise you.”
A small smile played on her lips, and she met his gaze again, noticing the genuine warmth in his eyes. “I remember that,” she said, feeling a surge of excitement. “So… this is your surprise?”
“Yes,” he said, flicking his fingers, using his Telekinesis. The two mugs of honey milk tea floated up from the table, one drifting over to her and the other to him. She took her mug, cupping it in her hands and relishing the gentle warmth.
He sipped his tea, then smirked. “Just so you know, this part wasn’t prepared by me. Celia’s the genius behind the tea.”
Puriel chuckled, taking a sip herself and savoring the smooth, comforting sweetness of the drink. “I know,” she said, smiling into her mug. The warmth of the tea spread through her.
Ethan gestured toward the bouquet of flowers lying beside her. “Do you like the flowers?” he asked, nodding toward them.
“What flowers?” she said, almost in disbelief. Puriel blinked, glancing down at the soft pink roses and lilies lying next to her. For a moment, she was taken aback—she hadn’t even noticed them until now. She reached out, her fingers brushing the delicate petals.
“Yup, that one,” he replied, an amused glint in his eyes. “The box next to them is for you, too. I wasn’t sure if you had any way of, you know, conjuring clothes like I do, so I thought I’d get you something fitting for tonight.”
Puriel’s heart fluttered as she took hold of the bouquet. She kissed the soft petals and hugged it close to her chest, happiness flooding through her. This was more than she could have hoped for. Something inside her stirred, a feeling unfamiliar but undeniable, something that made her heartbeat quicken in a way she didn’t fully understand. Love maybe? She wasn’t sure.
After a moment, she placed the bouquet down carefully and picked up the box beside her. Her fingers tingled with anticipation as she lifted the lid, revealing a dress and a hair accessory inside. The dress was simple and soft, not overly extravagant, but lovely in its own way. It wasn’t like the grand, formal gowns of her realm, but rather, it had a charm that felt more… approachable.
She glanced at Ethan, her smile widening. “Thank you,” she whispered, her voice filled with genuine gratitude. She felt like she was seeing a different side of him tonight, a side that was gentle, thoughtful. It was strange, but it was also… endearing.
Ethan gave a small nod, brushing it off like it was nothing. But Puriel could tell that he’d put effort into this, and that only made her more grateful. Her gaze shifted back to the dress, and a slight blush crept up her cheeks as she realized she’d have to change into it.
“Alright,” she said, gathering her courage. “Turn around so I can change.”
Ethan huffed, rolling his eyes. “Alright, alright,” he muttered, turning his back to her. He took another sip of his tea, his posture casual, though she could sense he was still aware of her every movement.
Puriel placed the dress on her lap, running her fingers over the fabric, feeling its softness. She quickly took a breath, trying to calm her racing heart as she slipped out of Ethan’s t-shirt and sweatpants. The cool night air brushed against her skin, making her shiver, but she hurried to pull on the dress, letting it settle around her shoulders and down her form.
She adjusted the dress and picked up the hair accessory Ethan had chosen. It was a small, delicate hairpin, simple yet lovely, with a soft sparkle that caught the soft light. She placed it carefully in her hair, feeling a small surge of pride and excitement at her new appearance.
“Alright,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper, feeling a little nervous but eager to show Ethan. “You can turn around now.”
Ethan set his mug down and turned, his gaze sweeping over her. For a brief moment, she saw a flicker of surprise in his eyes, quickly replaced by a quiet, appreciative smile.
