I shrugged. "What can I say? Efficiency."
Celia handed me the mugs of honey milk tea, still chuckling. "You’re something else, you know that?"
"I aim to please," I replied, taking the mugs from her. Then she looked at the dress bag in my other hand.
"Did you check out other dresses? Compare options?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
I shook my head. "Nope. I asked for the dress, got the size, paid, and left. Easy."
Celia gave me a look that was somewhere between impressed and exasperated. "You really don’t mess around, do you?"
"No time for fashion experiments," I said with a shrug. "I trust your judgment. Besides, I wasn’t about to stand there pretending I knew what I was doing."
She laughed. "Well, you’ve got that right. Hopefully, Puriel likes it."
I nodded, confident. "She’ll like it. It’s not about the dress itself, anyway. It’s the thought."
“Time to bring the princess,” I muttered to myself, getting ready to set the plan in motion.
Celia, who was still leaning against the counter, raised an eyebrow at my comment. Her gaze shifted from the dress bag and flower bouquet in one hand to the two mugs of honey milk tea balanced in the other. She frowned, clearly trying to figure out what I was doing.
“What do you mean?” she asked, her tone laced with suspicion.
I smirked, snapping my fingers with a little flair. The items immediately floated beside me, suspended in the air by my magic. "This," I said smugly.
Celia scoffed, shaking her head. “Show-off,” she muttered, rolling her eyes. But there was a hint of amusement in her voice, even if she wouldn’t admit it.
I ignored her playful jab and walked toward the couch where Puriel was still fast asleep. She looked peaceful, her face soft and relaxed, her wings tucked gently behind her. It was the first time I’d seen her so at ease, without that constant worry or confusion clouding her expression. For a moment, I hesitated, my hand hovering above her shoulder as I contemplated waking her.
She looked… tired. The kind of exhaustion that goes deeper than just needing sleep. It made me second-guess my timing, but then again, tonight wasn’t just about breaking the seal. It was about helping her feel connected, grounded in this new world she found herself in. I wanted to show her there was more than the heaviness she’d carried for centuries.
Carefully, I decided against waking her the normal way. Instead, I scooped her up gently, making sure not to disturb her sleep. Her body was surprisingly light in my arms, her head resting against my chest as I cradled her. She stirred for a second but didn’t wake, just nuzzled closer as if seeking comfort. I felt a strange warmth spread through me, a sensation I hadn’t expected.
With Puriel safe in my arms, I opened a portal, the dress, bouquet, and mugs floating behind me. Just as I was about to step through, I glanced back at Celia. She was standing there, her arms crossed, her usual smirk replaced with a look of quiet concern. Her eyes, though she didn’t say anything, were filled with a mixture of worry and something else… maybe fear.
I knew what she was thinking. The seal-breaking ritual could have consequences. There was a risk involved, one I hadn’t really talked about out loud. But I wasn’t about to back down now. I had already made up my mind.
'It’ll be fine,' I thought, giving Celia a reassuring nod. 'I’ve got this.'
She didn’t say anything, just gave me a small, tight-lipped smile, and I stepped through the portal.
When I emerged on the other side, the secluded stargazing spot I had prepared spread out before me. The air was noticeably colder, a crispness in the wind that carried the faint scent of pine. The night sky was now a deep, velvety black, dotted with a million stars that seemed to stretch on forever.
I had chosen a clearing on a small hill, surrounded by towering trees that created a natural barrier, offering us privacy while still giving us an open view of the sky above. In the center of the clearing, I had placed a large, elegant bed. The bed was covered in thick, luxurious blankets.
Around the bed, I had placed several lanterns, each flickering gently in the breeze. They weren’t too bright—just enough to light the area without taking away from the starlit sky above or lure the insects to us. Off to the side, a small table held the essentials.
I carefully laid Puriel down on the bed, her body sinking into the soft blankets. I made sure she was comfortable before stepping back. It felt perfect, almost like a dream. I was completely in shock I could pull something like this.
The flower bouquet, soft pink roses mixed with lilies, went beside her. I set the bag with her new dress next to them, making sure she could see it when she woke fully. It wasn’t overly flashy, but it was elegant enough to match the night. The mugs of honey milk tea, still warm and steaming, were placed on the small table by the side of the bed.
‘Now, I just need to get myself ready,’ I thought, glancing down at my own clothes. I snapped my fingers, using my Demon’s Clothes and in an instant, my casual wear disappeared, replaced by another. But this time, I chose something more subtle, something that fit the mood of the evening. A neat shirt, dark and slightly fitted, paired with black trousers. It wasn’t formal, but it had a seductive edge.
The way the shirt clung to my frame gave me just enough confidence, and I decided to keep my appearance as Ethan. She seemed more comfortable around me like this, rather than in my incubus form. Besides, this version of me was more grounded, more human, which was exactly what tonight needed.
