"Good," I replied, my smile widening. "Glad we’re on the same page."
Zalira, who had been quietly observing our back-and-forth, finally spoke up. "Do you want to free her now?" she asked.
I gave Zalira a nod. "Yes, the agreement between you two is complete, right? She agreed, and it’s time to let her go." I paused, glancing at Puriel with a teasing smirk. "And don’t worry, she won’t be able to run off anywhere. I can guarantee it."
Puriel shot me a glare, clearly unimpressed with my insinuation. But she didn’t argue.
Zalira hesitated, her eyes flicking between me and the crystal, but after a long pause, she finally gave a small nod. "Fine," she said, though I could hear the uncertainty in her voice. It wasn’t every day she could watch an angel like Puriel get freed from centuries of imprisonment by an Incubus Lord, after all.
"Great," I said, my tone brightening as I gestured for both her and Mia to step back. "Please, step back a bit. This could get messy."
Without protest, both Zalira and Mia obeyed, retreating a few paces until they were safely out of the way. Once they were clear, I extended my hand toward them. "Barrier," I said calmly.
A shimmering dome of dark energy surrounded them, forming a solid protective shield.
[Barrier has formed!]
Satisfied, I turned my attention back to the crystal.
I held out my other hand. A dark, swirling vortex of energy formed on my palm, condensing into a small cube of shadows that pulsed with sinister intent. The cube quickly grew, expanding until it engulfed the entire chamber.
[You have activated The Devil Space skill!]
[You have nullified the Holy Barrier effect!]
[Your power has returned to normal.]
"Right," I muttered under my breath, feeling my demonic energy coursing through my veins back to normal. It was like a floodgate had opened, and for the first time since entering this cursed place, my true strength was back.
I extended my hand to the side and summoned my black sword. The moment the sword appeared, I heard Zalira gasp behind me, her eyes wide with recognition.
"That sword…" she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "That’s the one from the legend."
I smirked at her reaction but kept my focus on the crystal.
Puriel, sensing what was about to happen, retreated into the crystal. She knew what was coming.
I gripped the hilt of the sword tightly and took a deep breath. Then, without hesitation, I raised the blade above my head. "Time to break this prison," I muttered to myself, activating my Demonic Energy skill.
[Demonic Energy has been activated.]
A surge of energy exploded through me, amplifying my strength. The sword pulsed in response. My muscles coiled as I prepared to strike, and then I jumped, bringing the sword down with all my might.
The blade collided with the crystal, and the impact was immediate.
- Clang!
A deafening impact echoed through the chamber as the sword struck the barrier of light that surrounded Puriel’s prison. Sparks of holy and demonic energy erupted from the point of contact, filling the air. The force of the collision rattled through my body, nearly knocking me off balance.
The crystal fought back. It wasn’t just a prison—it was also a shield, designed to protect Puriel from exactly this kind of attack. I could feel the resistance as I pushed my sword against it, the holy magic pushing back with every ounce of its strength. It was like trying to cut through a wall of solid light.
"Damn," I grunted, my muscles straining against the force. "Stubborn thing…"
But I wasn’t about to back down. My grip tightened on the hilt.
"I’m not done yet," I growled, and with a roar, I swung the sword again, harder this time. The impact sent another shockwave through the chamber, and I could feel the crystal weakening, tiny cracks spider-webbing across its surface.
The crystal groaned under the pressure, the cracks spreading faster now, and I could feel the holy magic inside it beginning to falter. With one final, forceful swing, I brought the sword down again, and this time, the crystal shattered.
A blinding light exploded from the broken shards, filling the room with an intense, radiant glow. I shielded my eyes as the light washed over me, feeling the heat of the holy energy dissipate. When the brilliance finally subsided, I blinked through the haze and there she was—Puriel’s real body, hovering in the midst of the shattered crystal. Her dress was torn and frayed. It was a reminder of the centuries she had spent trapped here, imprisoned by the aftermath of the battle between the previous Demon King and her angelic sisters.
Her wings, though still majestic, looked dull. Puriel’s face was pale, her features soft with unconsciousness. She hung suspended in midair, fragile, and for a moment, I simply stared. This was the same angel who had pouted and scolded me not long ago, and yet now, seeing her like this, I felt something different—something I hadn’t expected.
Her body began to collapse, gravity taking hold of her as she lost what little power had kept her aloft. Without thinking, I released my sword, letting it dissolve into a dark aura that faded from existence, and I moved. My arms reached out just in time to catch her falling body before she hit the ground. She was light, so light, like holding a feather.
“I got you,” I whispered, cradling her against my chest. Her body was limp, her head resting against my shoulder. I held her tighter, almost afraid she might slip away. “I got you…” I repeated, my voice softer this time, as if saying it to convince myself. I couldn’t believe it. After everything—I had finally freed her.
Puriel stirred slightly in my arms, her eyelids fluttering as she slowly regained consciousness. She was weak, her breathing shallow. Her eyes, those familiar, radiant blue eyes, opened just a sliver, and when they focused on me, I saw recognition, and something more—something deeper.
