Mia laughed softly, her eyes sparkling with amusement. “I can imagine. But it’s not necessarily a bad thing. Look at them—they’re the center of attention now. It might work in our favor.”
I nodded, considering her words. “True. If they continue to draw attention, it might give us more freedom to move around and gather information.”
We stood by the refreshment table, the noise of the party buzzing around us. The music played on, a soft, elegant melody that added to the atmosphere of opulence and celebration. I took another sip of my wine, my mind racing with thoughts of how to use this unexpected development to our advantage.
Pearl and Diamond were indeed the center of attention. They moved through the crowd, engaging in polite conversation with various nobles. Their beauty was undeniable, and it was clear that everyone in the hall was captivated by their presence. It was a perfect distraction.
Mia’s eyes followed the twins for a moment before she turned back to me. “We should use this time wisely. While everyone’s attention is on them, we can try to get closer to the queen and see if we can speak with her.”
I glanced at the queen for a moment before returning my gaze to Mia. “But your sister is still on her throne. She doesn't seem interested in coming down and mingling with the others,” I stated.
“Should we approach her?” Mia asked, her tone suggesting that it was a reasonable option.
“Can we?” I asked in disbelief. “I mean… is that polite? She’s on the stage, on her throne,” I repeated, trying to grasp the protocol of this world.
“Why not? The celebration has been going on for at least fifteen minutes, not just started,” she said in a relaxed tone.
“Isn’t that rude?” I said, still hesitant.
“It doesn’t matter as long as the person approaching has a need, and of course, only important people, her trusted subordinates, and family can do this. That is a common rule. I think you already know that too. You have the same status as me, right?” she reminded me, referencing my status as the prince of darkness.
I held back a cringe as I remembered all the rules in the demon world. “Uh… my world's rules are kinda different. We are a bit… uh, unique and provide more freedom,” I said, feeling a bit out of place.
Mia chuckled softly, her eyes twinkling with amusement. “Well, welcome to the Serpent Kingdom. Here, formality and protocol are deeply ingrained. But as my guest and with your status, you have the right to approach her.” She glanced at me. "The important thing is that you know how you should behave in front of a royal, right?" Mia confirmed, her eyes locking onto mine with a mixture of seriousness and concern.
I frowned for a moment and glanced at Mia. 'Zalira is her sister, so they shouldn't be much different, right?' I thought. “Yes,” I said, somewhat confidently. “I mean, you are a royal too and I often interact with you. So it should be the same, right?”
Mia quickly shook her head. “Uh… I mean other royals than I am. The queen is a bit different from me. She is more serious and intimidating. So don't use me as an example."
“Other royals?” I mused aloud, then hummed thoughtfully. “Pearl and Diamond are also royal, right?” I asked, thinking of the Kraken twins.
Mia gave me a flat stare. "They are, but they never act like anyone except themselves," she said with a grimace.
“Is there anyone else you can think of?” she asked again, prompting me to dig deeper.
"My mom and dad?" I said, raising my eyebrows. Of course, I wasn’t referring to my human mother or my late human father, but Lord Damon and Lilieth, my demonic parents.
Mia's frown deepened, and she grimaced, her face paling slightly. “You mean the ones from your world?” she confirmed.
“Yes,” I said, “Who else?” I added, trying to make my point.
She sighed, clearly grappling with the intricacies of explaining court etiquette to someone from a different realm.
“Hey, I'm also a royal. I act like myself. I mean, a royal is still a human too, right?” I said in a casual tone, attempting to find some common ground.
“But you are not,” she reminded me, her tone firm yet gentle.
I pressed my lips together. 'She is right,' I conceded internally. The rules and expectations in the human world, particularly in the Serpent Kingdom, were clearly different from those in the demon realm.
“Right,” I said, acknowledging her point. "Can you explain what to do and what not to do in front of her?" I asked, realizing that navigating these formalities was crucial.
Mia nodded, taking a deep breath as she prepared to impart her knowledge. “First and foremost, always address her as ‘Your Majesty’. Never use her first name casually, even though she’s my sister. It’s a matter of respect and protocol.”
I nodded, taking mental notes. “Got it. Address her formally.”
“When you approach her, make sure to bow. A slight bow from the waist will do. It shows deference and respect for her position.”
“Understood. Bow when approaching,” I repeated, making sure to remember each step.
Mia continued, “Speak only when spoken to, unless it’s absolutely necessary. Be concise and clear in your speech. Don’t ramble or go off-topic.”
“Speak only when spoken to, be concise,” I echoed, feeling a mix of anxiety and determination.
“Also, maintain eye contact but don’t stare. It’s important to show confidence, but not to the point of being intimidating or disrespectful.”
“Eye contact, but no staring. Got it.”
“And one more thing,” she added, her tone becoming more serious. “Don’t interrupt her. Even if you have something important to say, wait for her to finish speaking.”
“Don’t interrupt,” I repeated, understanding the importance of patience in these interactions. "Anything else?" I asked, wanting to be sure I didn't miss any important details.
Mia shook her head. "No, that covers the basics. Just remember to stay respectful and follow my lead if you're unsure about anything."
