I offered my hand to Mia, giving her a charming smile. “Shall we, then?”
A smile bloomed on her face. She squeezed my hand and led me towards the dance floor. We stepped into the swirling mass of nobles, the music enveloped us. The haunting melody guided the dancers in their sinuous movements, and I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness.
The serpent nobles moved with a mesmerizing fluidity. Their bodies were undulated in a way that seemed to defy the natural laws of motion, creating a dance that was both beautiful and alien to me. It was impossible for me to do the same! I had legs, not a tail!
I glanced at Mia, wondering how she would move in this dance. As if reading my thoughts, Mia smiled reassuringly. “Just follow my lead, Damian. It’s not as complicated as it looks. Just move your legs in the same direction, you don’t have to slither like me.”
I nodded, determined to match her movement. She led me into the rhythm of the dance, our bodies moving in harmony with the music. It felt strange at first, but I quickly adapted, focusing on Mia and her guidance.
‘Hey, this isn't as bad as I thought,’ I mused to myself as Mia and I moved together. True, it was a bit odd dancing with her. Being a lamia, she moved differently than a human partner would. I had to be mindful of her tail, making sure it didn’t knock into my feet, and I had to be careful with my foot movements so I didn’t step on it.
Luckily, my demon instincts were sharp. After countless battles and hellish training sessions, my concentration and focus were honed to a fine edge. It was another advantage of being a demon, I supposed. I was able to adapt quickly, synchronizing my movements with Mia’s. Her tail, far from being an obstacle, became an extension of our dance, weaving around us like a living ribbon.
The music swelled, a haunting melody played on unfamiliar instruments that added an ethereal quality to the atmosphere. Crystal chandeliers cast a soft, shimmering light over the dancers, reflecting off the polished marble floor and creating an almost dreamlike scene.
Despite the unfamiliar dance and the formal setting, I found myself enjoying the moment. Mia’s eyes sparkled with amusement and something else—a shared secret, a private joke. We moved together, our steps guided by the music. It was a strange, beautiful dance, one that felt both intimate and public.
After I got used to the dance movements, I started paying closer attention to my surroundings. It didn’t take long to notice that our dance had attracted the attention of those around us. Especially the women, who seemed particularly interested in me. Their murmurs and whispers were like a subtle current running through the room, and I could feel their eyes on me, curious and intrigued.
I glanced toward Zalira, who was still seated on her throne. My initial intention was simply to check on her and make sure she was still there, but to my surprise, I found her looking directly at me. Our eyes met, and for a brief moment, the noise and movement of the hall faded into the background.
Of course, I decided to take a chance. I gave her a subtle, seductive smile—nothing too overt, just enough to convey my interest. After all, we were at a royal event, and I couldn’t afford to flirt openly. Subtlety was key.
Zalira’s expression remained stoic, almost indifferent, but I didn’t miss the slight blush that crept up her cheeks. It was a small victory, one that told me my charm wasn’t entirely ineffective.
‘As expected of a queen,’ I scoffed internally, acknowledging her ability to maintain her composure. Still, the blush was there, a telltale sign that I had managed to get under her skin, if only a little.
Returning my focus to the dance, I noticed that Mia had seen the exchange. She gave me a knowing smile, her eyes twinkling with amusement. “Looks like someone has caught the queen’s eye,” she teased quietly.
I smirked, not missing a step in our dance. “It’s all part of the plan, princess,” I stated. “She still acts cold, but I saw her blushing," I added, a hint of satisfaction in my voice.
"Well, the later conversation will be interesting then," Mia said again, a smirk on her lips.
"I hope so," I replied with a smile.
We continued to dance and circled around the dance hall, and my gaze roamed the room. I started to notice how the crowd around us was thinning, their attention seemingly diverted elsewhere. It was as if a magnetic force was drawing them toward another part of the hall.
Curiosity piqued, I scanned the room more intently. Near the entrance, a new crowd had gathered, creating a buzz of excitement that rippled through the hall. It made me wonder who or what had managed to steal the attention from the queen, the newly engaged couple, and even from me. This unexpected shift surprised me.
Mia seemed to notice the change as well. “Do you have any predictions on who or what?” I asked her without further ado.
She didn’t answer immediately, her brow furrowing as she thought. “Nothing comes to mind,” she finally said, a note of uncertainty in her voice.
We continued our dance, but my focus was now split. I was curious about the new development, and it was clear that something or someone significant had arrived. The nobles around us were subtly shifting, their heads turning toward the entrance with expressions of interest and intrigue.
Mia asked, "Should we check it out?" She glanced in the direction of the growing crowd near the entrance, her curiosity mirroring my own.
I glanced over at the queen first. If she was still watching me, I wouldn't move from this spot. However, I found her engaged in conversation with the newly engaged couple. Her attention was also divided, which meant I had the opportunity to investigate without losing her interest entirely.
