The elevator doors slid open, exposing another room. The space was nothing like the dingy basement we had descended from. Instead, it exuded an air of opulence and grandeur, with polished marble floors and intricately carved furnishings.
The masked figures brought us out of the elevator. As they walked along the corridor, my attention was drawn to the paintings adorning the walls. Unlike Red’s painting in the academy, these paintings were of a different caliber altogether. Each canvas depicted scenes from the war that had ravaged the land three hundred years ago. But instead of focusing solely on me as the lord of wrath, these paintings portrayed the domination of demons and the suffering of mortals at their hands. They depicted the intimidation and terror inflicted upon the mortal realm, as well as the desperate pleas of mortals for mercy.
The images depicted in the paintings were a reminder of the power and influence wielded by my kin, the demons, and the devastation they had wrought upon the mortal realm. One painting depicted mortals who had turned to me, the devil, for salvation.
One painting in particular caught my attention. It depicted a scene reminiscent of the ancient one, featuring a powerful demon with numerous tentacles writhing around it. The details were somewhat obscured as if shrouded in shadow.
I longed to examine the painting more closely, to unravel its mysteries and uncover its secrets. But alas, they kept a brisk pace, leading us further down the corridor and away from the tantalizing artwork.
‘So what Dad said is true. The ancient demon once appeared in the mortal realm and wreaked havoc here,’ I thought to myself. And it seemed they guessed the ancient demon was me.
‘Well, at least that explains why the cult chose to worship me rather than other lords of sin or even my father,’ I thought with a hint of pride. It was strange to feel proud of something so dark and sinister, but the idea that I was being revered for my power and influence was undeniably appealing.
But along with the pride came a sense of unease. Was I destined to follow in the footsteps of a being responsible for so much destruction?
After passing through the long corridor, we finally arrived at a large room. The room seemed to stretch on endlessly, with high ceilings that disappeared into darkness. The walls were adorned with intricate tapestries depicting scenes of ancient battles and mythical creatures, adding to the room's majestic atmosphere.
At the end of the room, a large curtain hung, dividing the space like a partition. It was thick and opaque, preventing anyone from seeing what lay beyond. Strange sounds emanated from behind the curtain, a cacophony of groans, moans, and roaring breaths.
The floors were made of polished marble, gleaming under the soft glow of crystal chandeliers that hung from the ceiling. The elegant furnishings and intricate decorations spoke of wealth and luxury.
I scanned the room and noticed some magical formations. Some were disguised as paintings, their intricate designs blending seamlessly with the ornate décor. These formations were diverse and complex, each serving a specific purpose in protecting the room and its occupants. I recognized some of the formations from my knowledge of dark magic, symbols of warding and protection that were meant to deter intruders and thwart unwanted spells. It was clear that whoever had designed this room had gone to great lengths to ensure its security.
‘Barrier, fire, freeze, Mana drain, gravity,’ I thought, mentally listing the high-level spells around me. It was like being in the middle of a magical maelstrom, with spells flying left and right, each one more powerful than the last. But for me and Puriel, it was child's play. Our powers far surpassed those of mere mortals, and a single Dispel skill was all it took to deflect the onslaught of magic. These were spells that could level cities and topple empires, yet here they were being used against me with little effect.
But what struck me the most was the rarity of these spells in modern times. Back in the day, they were a staple of any mage's arsenal, taught in battle academies, and studied in libraries across the land. Yet now, they seemed to have fallen out of favor, relegated to the realm of forgotten knowledge.
I couldn't help but wonder why. Perhaps it was a matter of practicality, with newer, more efficient spells taking their place. Or maybe it was a deliberate choice, a way to control the flow of power and prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. Whatever the reason, it was clear that these spells were no longer common knowledge. They were a relic of a bygone era.
The guards put us on a large table made of marble, its smooth surface gleaming under the soft glow of the room's lights. It was an imposing sight, large enough to accommodate several people at once, yet cold and uninviting. There was a meter distance between me and Puriel. It was as if they were deliberately keeping us apart.
I felt the cool touch of the marble against my skin. The surface was smooth and polished, but it offered little comfort. The guards positioned themselves around the table, their watchful eyes never leaving us for a moment. It was clear that we were not to move or speak unless instructed to do so.
Not only that, my nose could detect a peculiar scent lingering in the room, a delicate blend of herbs and flowers that wafted through the air. It was an unusual fragrance. The aroma seemed to permeate every corner of the room, wrapping around me like a shroud.
At first, I thought it was simply a pleasant perfume or air freshener, but I began to detect something more sinister lurking beneath the surface. There was a faint hint of something earthy and organic, a scent that stirred memories of ancient rituals and forbidden magic.
It was then that I realized the true nature of the fragrance. It was not simply a pleasant aroma meant to mask the sterile environment of the room. No, it was something far more insidious. It was the scent of a plant from the mortal realm, one that was known for its hallucinogenic properties.
