Ruby's gaze bore into mine with a mixture of defiance and vulnerability, her eyes searching for answers that I wasn't sure I could provide. It was clear that she was grappling with conflicting emotions, torn between her love for me and her frustration at my actions.
"I made him my punching bag," she admitted, her voice tinged with regret. "I know he knew something, yet he didn't tell me. And I know maybe you were the one who asked him not to tell me. I was so mad. I don't understand why you can be so unfair."
"I know he is your childhood friend," Ruby continued, her voice trembling with emotion. "You guys are quite close. But... is he willing to make sacrifices like me? Does he want to give his life like mine to you?" Her words cut through me like a knife, laying bare the depths of her devotion and the insecurities that plagued her every thought.
I struggled to find the right words, to explain the reasons behind my actions. But before I could respond, Ruby took a deep breath and spoke again.
"I understand I was wrong," she admitted, her tone softer now, filled with remorse. "Yet I'm not happy. What I thought was looking for information about you and where you are. That's all." She paused for a moment, her words hanging in the air like a heavy fog. "I shouldn't have done it. It's not his fault, and he has shown his loyalty to you as a true friend. That was a good thing, and it was the only thing that made me stop. He was your good friend, and I warned myself that I shouldn't hurt the person who was trying to protect you since he had the same reason as mine."
I could see the conflict etched into her features, the battle raging within her between her love for me and her desire to do what was right. It was a proof of her complexities of emotions, of the lengths she would go to for the ones she loved, even if it meant hurting the others.
It was the first time she had ever opened up to me in such a raw and vulnerable way, and I knew that I had to listen, to truly hear what she had to say.
I nodded silently, my eyes locked onto hers as she spoke, her words piercing through the silence like arrows. It was clear that she was struggling with a whirlwind of emotions, torn between her love for me and her frustration at my actions.
"But what should you know when you're gone, Ethan,” she stated, her voice tinged with annoyance and frustration. I could hear the pain laced beneath her words, the hurt she felt at being left in the dark. "I felt worthless. I felt you were wasting me. You wasted my pure feelings for me. I was mad," she hissed, her teeth gritted in anger.
"But that keychain..." she continued, her voice shifting to one of sadness. An ironic chuckle escaped her lips as she spoke. "That simple keychain changed everything. I know it's not valuable to you. But for me, it's something precious. It shows that you still value me, that you remember me. You can change my feelings in a snap like that. Just because of a keychain. Pathetic, right?" she said bitterly.
I could see the pain etched into every line of her face, the torment of her inner turmoil laid bare for all to see.
The keychain incident, which I had brushed off as nothing more than a stupid game of cat and mouse, held far more significance to her than I had ever imagined. I hadn't realized just how much weight she had placed on that seemingly insignificant gesture, how much it meant to her to feel valued and remembered. It shocked me.
In her eyes, that keychain wasn't just a random trinket—it was a symbol of my affection, a token of my acknowledgment and appreciation.
"Thank you for sharing that with me, Ruby," I said, my voice filled with sincerity. "I never realized just how much that keychain meant to you, but I'm glad you told me. It helps me understand where you're coming from."
Despite my gratitude for her honesty, I couldn't shake the feeling that there needed to be some understanding from her side too. A relationship was a two-way street, after all, and it was important for both of us to respect each other's boundaries.
"But I also hope that you can understand where I'm coming from," I continued, my tone gentle yet firm. "I want to be there for you, but I also need you to respect my boundaries. It's important for both of us to have space and autonomy in this relationship."
I held her gaze, hoping that she would see the sincerity in my eyes and understand the importance of mutual respect and understanding.
After I expressed my thoughts, there was a heavy silence that lingered between us. Ruby seemed lost in thought, her brows furrowed in deep contemplation as she processed my words.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, she spoke, her voice filled with uncertainty. "I will try, Ethan," she said softly, her words hesitant. "But I can't promise you that it will be easy for me."
Her admission tugged at my heartstrings, reminding me of the internal struggles she faced in navigating her feelings for me. Despite her efforts to change, I knew that old habits and emotions could be difficult to overcome.
"I understand, Ruby," I replied, reaching out to gently squeeze her hand in reassurance. "I know that it's not easy for you, and I appreciate it. Just know that I'm here to support you every step of the way."
She nodded, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips as she squeezed my hand in return. It was a small gesture about her willingness to try and make things work between us.
"Thank you," she said softly, her gaze meeting mine with a mixture of gratitude and determination. "I'll do my best to respect your boundaries, even if it's hard for me."
