"Sure. Just say what you want to say," Ruby said, her voice gentle and her smile sweet. It was almost disarming, the way she seemed to radiate warmth and understanding.
I took a moment to collect my thoughts. "I know you're a unique girl, Ruby," I began, my voice soft as I searched for the right words. "You have some different ways to deal with things, especially when it comes to me. But now, you're my servant, I hope you can... act more, uh, proper," I continued, stumbling over my words as I tried to articulate my thoughts.
There was a brief pause as Ruby absorbed my words, her expression thoughtful as she considered my request. "Okay," she said finally, her voice steady as she met my gaze with a nod. "I can change for the better, for you," she added, her smile still firmly in place.
"Great," I said, trying to mask the confusion that churned in my mind. A frown creased my forehead as I silently wondered, 'Wait... she didn't give me any resistance or anything?' It was unexpected, to say the least. I had anticipated some pushback, maybe a bit of negotiation or at least a hint of reluctance. After all, it wasn't an order; she could have easily presented an argument or voiced her concerns. Yet here she was, agreeing without so much as a second thought.
"Just to make sure, Ruby. Are you okay?" I asked, my confusion evident in the furrow of my brow. Something about her response didn't sit right with me. She seemed... too compliant, too agreeable. It was unlike her usual demeanor, and it left me feeling uneasy.
This wasn't like Ruby at all, and it made me wonder what could possibly be going on behind that sweet smile of hers. 'You don't act as usual,' I thought to myself, but I refrained from voicing my concerns aloud. I didn't want to give her any opportunity to take advantage of the situation, to twist my words into something they weren't.
"Yes, I'm okay," Ruby stated, her voice gentle as she approached me and took my hand in hers. I couldn't help but feel a twinge of unease at the intensity of her gaze as she looked into my eyes. "As long as you are happy, I'm okay," she added softly, her words laced with a hint of reluctance that she seemed to be trying to suppress.
I furrowed my brow, trying to make sense of the situation. There was something off about Ruby's demeanor, something that didn't quite add up. Her self-consciousness was strange, out of character for someone who usually exuded confidence and certainty.
But then, a thought crossed my mind—a nagging suspicion that refused to be ignored. Taking a deep breath, I decided to confront the issue head-on. "Tell me, Ruby," I said, my tone firm as I locked eyes with her. "Were you eavesdropping on my conversation with Celia and the others?"
I couldn't shake the feeling that Ruby's sudden change in attitude was somehow connected to that conversation, that she had overheard something she wasn't supposed to.
As soon as I posed the question, Ruby's smile vanished, replaced by a tense pressing of her lips. I could sense the unease radiating off her, like a palpable wave of discomfort filling the room.
"Tell me the truth. I won't be angry," I reassured her, hoping to coax out the honesty I knew was lurking beneath the surface.
A short pause hung in the air, the only sounds filling the room, the steady ticking of the clock and the soft whisper of the wind outside the window. I waited with bated breath, my heart pounding in anticipation, until finally, Ruby spoke.
"Yes," she admitted, her voice taking on a more somber tone than before.
"Since when?" I pressed, my curiosity getting the better of me as I sought to understand the extent of her intrusion into my private conversations.
Ruby hesitated for a moment, her gaze flickering away from mine before meeting it once again. "Since Celia asked whether you hate me or not," she confessed.
I let out a long exhale, running a hand through my hair in a gesture of frustration and disbelief.
"So that's why you suddenly changed?" I asked, wanting to confirm what I already suspected.
Ruby met my gaze with a soft, apologetic expression. "But isn't that what you want?" she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
I couldn't deny the truth in her words. Yes, deep down, this was what I wanted. But seeing the conflict and reluctance in her eyes, I couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt gnawing at my conscience. "Does that hurt you?" I asked, my voice tinged with concern. "You're clearly... not willing to do it."
A heavy silence fell between us as Ruby wrestled with her emotions, her eyes downcast as she struggled to find the right words. I could see the turmoil swirling within her, the inner conflict threatening to consume her.
"Tell me, Ruby," I pressed, my voice gentle yet firm. "Is that too hard for you?"
For a moment, she hesitated, her lips pressed into a thin line as she considered her response. But then, finally, she nodded reluctantly, her admission hanging in the air like a heavy fog.
"Why? I mean, isn't that normal for some people?" I asked, my confusion evident in the softness of my voice. It was hard to wrap my head around Ruby's admission, to understand why she felt the need to resort to such extreme measures.
"It's normal for them. But not me," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper as she lowered her head in shame. My heart ached at the sight of her vulnerability, at the raw honesty in her words.
"That is the way I show my love to you. So my beloved one will never leave me again," she confessed, her words heavy with emotion. It was a stark reminder of the lengths she was willing to go to in order to keep me by her side, to ensure that I never slipped away from her grasp again.
