"That sounds troublesome," Buni's disappointed tone was clear. As her bunny ears drooped, I made a mental note to try and lift her spirits later.
"Yeah, it's definitely more work than we bargained for," I acknowledged with a grimace. The prospect of diving back into our usual routine of hunting down targets was far from appealing, especially after the recent setback.
Amidst our conversation, the rhythmic clatter of pots and pans emanating from the kitchen served as a constant backdrop. The sound of cooking filled the air, accompanied by the tantalizing aroma of food slowly permeating the room. Despite my preoccupation with our discussion, I couldn't help but find myself tempted by the delicious scent wafting through the air.
"Since the project has failed, do you think they will give up?" Red inquired, turning to me for insight.
I paused for a moment, considering his question carefully. The thought of our adversaries conceding defeat seemed almost too good to be true, given the lengths they had gone to in order to pursue their goals.
"I doubt they'll give up that easily," I admitted, my tone tinged with resignation. My expression was serious as I delved into the complexities of our situation. It was clear to me that our recent failure wouldn't deter our adversaries from their ultimate goal: ensuring the safety of the human world, even if it meant contending with powerful entities like Beel and myself.
"They have seen Beel's power and my power in my demon lord form," I remarked, my voice grave. "They will look for ways to build new forces to fight us. Or at least to ensure the human world is safe."
It was a sobering realization, but one that I had come to accept in the course of our ongoing struggle against the demon hunter organization. They knew the stakes, and they wouldn't hesitate to take drastic measures to protect humanity from any perceived threats, including beings like Beel and myself.
"After all, they know both of us are dangers lurking in the dark," I continued, my tone tinged with resignation. It was a bitter truth to swallow, but one that couldn't be ignored if we were to navigate the challenges ahead.
The fear of the unknown. The prospect of our world falling into chaos and destruction at the hands of demons was a terrifying notion, one that would undoubtedly drive the organization to extreme lengths to prevent such a catastrophe.
"Once we decide to move and destroy the human world, then this world will end," I mused aloud, my mind racing with the implications of our actions. "So I'm sure the organization is afraid of that. And there's no way they would let foreign powers take over control of this world at any time."
"So, they will look for new targets?" Rave asked, his curiosity evident in his voice.
I nodded, acknowledging his question. "Yeah, they'll definitely be on the hunt for new recruits," I confirmed, my expression thoughtful. "But I'm not sure they'll target Celia. They'd have to make the same vaccine, and the chances of it being successful for her are smaller than mine."
It was a sobering realization, but one that I felt was important to consider. The organization would undoubtedly be strategizing their next move, and I needed to stay one step ahead of them if we were to protect ourselves and those we cared about.
"What does it mean that they will change their target to someone else? Like yesterday's demon hunter?" Shadow inquired, his curiosity evident in his tone.
"I don't like him," Red stated emphatically, his expression scrunching up in distaste.
"You mean Nathan?" I clarified, seeking confirmation.
Shadow didn't hesitate to affirm my suspicion, his tone tinged with a hint of disdain. "Yeah, that annoying guy," he confirmed, his sentiment echoed by the others in the room.
"Maybe," I replied, pondering the possibility. "I'm sure he would be happy to receive the vaccine," I added, imagining Nathan's reaction to the prospect.
Shadow's warning cut through the conversation, his concern evident in his voice. "Aren't you afraid that he will become your obstacle someday?" he asked, prompting me to consider the potential risks.
I took a moment to weigh his question, considering the various factors at play. "Because of his influence in the organization? Or because of his strength?" I clarified, seeking clarification.
"Both," Shadow affirmed, his tone serious.
I shrugged casually, trying to downplay any concerns. "I'm not too worried about his strength," I admitted. "Unless he manages to drain a high angel's angelic power and absorb it completely." It was a possibility, albeit a remote one, and one that I couldn't afford to ignore.
"As for his influence," I continued, "I have Mrs. Clea with me, and I think leveraging influence from senators is better than dealing with the likes of him." I had confidence in Mrs. Clea's ability to navigate the complexities of political influence, and I trusted her judgment implicitly.
Celia's response caught me off guard, her words dripping with sarcasm. "You sound like a demon lord who looks down on the hero," she remarked, setting a plate of fried rice in front of me.
Grinning, I accepted the plate eagerly. "So, you're saying Nathan's going to swoop in and save the day, huh?" I quipped, half-mocking.
Celia shrugged casually, her indifference evident in her tone. Meanwhile, Foxy transformed back into her fox form and nestled into Celia's lap, her presence comforting.
The idea of taking drastic action against Nathan crossed my mind, and I couldn't help but voice it aloud. "Should I just get rid of him then?" I asked nonchalantly, testing the waters.
Celia's reaction was immediate. She gasped, turning to me with wide eyes, clearly taken aback by my suggestion.
Chuckling, I reassured her, "Relax, I was just messing around." Despite my casual tone, the idea wasn't entirely out of the realm of possibility. In a worst-case scenario, eliminating Nathan might become a necessary course of action. But I saw no need to dwell on that possibility just yet.
Diving into the delicious fried rice, I couldn't help but shower Celia with compliments. "This is amazing!" I exclaimed between mouthfuls, the flavors dancing on my taste buds. Celia's cooking never failed to impress, and it was the perfect comfort food after a long day.
