The Incubus System Chapter 895. A Bunch of Paranoid Squirrels

Red's usual cheerful demeanor faltered, his ears drooping as he processed the news. His tail, once wagging excitedly, now hung limply behind him as he settled near my feet, a sympathetic expression on his furry face. “That sounds annoying,” he sympathized, his voice filled with genuine concern.

Buni bounded over and leaped into my lap, his enthusiasm undiminished by the disappointing turn of events.

“Yup,” I grumbled, frustration evident in my voice as I continued to aimlessly flip through channels on the TV. My gaze remained fixed on the screen, but my mind was elsewhere, dwelling on the failed mission. “And to make it worse, I couldn't even find any interesting information from their heads. Those senators hid themselves well,” I added bitterly, the irritation clear in my tone.

Well, from digging around in those doctors' heads, I ended up with a goldmine of info on how they process angelic power into vaccines. Pretty neat, huh? Too bad it was about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.

I mean, seriously, what am I supposed to do with that?

Two of those docs had ties to the SerpentRock Kingdom, so they knew all about the ins and outs of vaccine production. The others were on the development side of things, figuring out how to juice up those vaccines to give demon hunters an extra kick. Gotta hand it to them, though, it was not cheap to make those things. I talked about serious cash here, like, enough to make my poor student soul cry. And each one of those massive tubes of holy vaccine costs hundreds of millions of creds. I could eat out at fancy restaurants for the rest of eternity with that kind of dough.

“You didn't find anything interesting about the facilities either? Like the Holy Missiles thing?” Rave, perched on my shoulder, piped up, his wings fluttering with curiosity.

I shook my head, my expression flat. “Nope. That facility's just a glorified lab for churning out their fancy new vaccine and jabbing it into fresh recruits. There are no top-secret weapons or flashy weapons like I was hoping for. Just a run-of-the-mill training grounds and medical bays,” I explained, the words lacking any real excitement.

Rave let out a disappointed chirp, his feathers ruffling in frustration. "Bummer," he muttered, clearly hoping for something more thrilling to sink his beak into.

I shrugged, my attention drifting back to the TV. "Yeah," I mumbled, my mind already moving on to other thoughts. It was just another dead end in a day filled with them.

The demon hunter organization had a meticulous approach to their facilities, ensuring that each served a specific purpose and could operate independently if one fell into enemy hands. It was a strategic move to maintain their strength and ability to fight back even under duress. Each facility was compartmentalized, with workers only given access to information relevant to their roles. This way, if a staff member betrayed them or was compromised, the damage would be limited, and the enemy would only gain partial insights.

It was an effective tactic, one that I begrudgingly admired despite my annoyance. Even the senators, who were presumably the leaders of this organization, operated under a cloak of anonymity. They knew only their country of origin, keeping their names and other details hidden. This anonymity extended to the workers as well, ensuring that no single entity could take control or compromise the entire organization.

The rules were strict, prohibiting members from revealing their identities to each other. It was all about security and preventing any single individual or group from gaining too much influence. This structure also meant that I had limited access to information about the organization's inner workings. While I had managed to glean some details from the doctors' heads, there were still many mysteries surrounding the organization's hierarchy and operations.

It was a stark contrast to the chaotic and often reckless nature of demonkind. However, it also posed a significant challenge for someone like me, trying to gather intelligence and disrupt their operations. I would need to be more strategic in my approach, finding ways to exploit their weaknesses without falling into their carefully laid traps.

"Sounds annoying," Shadow, lounging lazily on my side of the sofa, chirped.

"You have no idea," I replied with a sigh, sinking further into the cushions. "They're like a bunch of paranoid squirrels, hoarding their nuts and keeping everything under lock and key."

"Yeah, but with more lethal consequences if you try to steal their nuts," Rave added wryly.

"Exactly," I nodded in agreement. "They may not be as powerful as us demons, but their secrecy and organization make them a force to be reckoned with. It's like playing chess with someone who's memorized every move of the game and anticipates your every strategy."

Shadow let out a low whistle. "That does sound like a pain."

"It is," I grumbled, running a hand through my hair in frustration. "But it's a challenge I'm willing to take on. I won't let a bunch of overprotective bureaucrats stand in the way of my plans."

Red chuckled. "That's the spirit. Just remember to watch your back. Those sneaky humans have a knack for catching you off guard when you least expect it."

I nodded.

Buni suddenly spoke. "Why did you ignore me?" he sulked, his voice barely above a whisper. His ears drooping as he stared at me with big, sad eyes

I sighed, feeling a pang of guilt. "I'm sorry, buddy," I said softly, reaching out to him. He didn't resist as I scooped him up into my arms, his warm fur comforting against my skin. "I've just been really upset, and I guess I wasn't paying attention."

He nuzzled his head against my chest, seeking reassurance. I stroked his head gently, my fingers tangling in his long ears.

Rave, who was perching on my shoulder, chirped in concern once again. "Should I call Celia and Foxy? They're up there," he suggested, his wings fluttering anxiously.
