"So, what is it?" Fiona asked, genuine curiosity furrowing her brow.
Rather than me, it was Barry who decided to take the lead on this one. "That's because she fell in love with Doc, of course," he declared with a mischievous grin.
“Obsession. We are talking about a woman with a crazy obsession," Ion chimed in, adding a touch of hyperbole to emphasize the gravity of the situation. His words carried an undertone of caution, as if dealing with Puriel's infatuation was akin to handling a ticking time bomb.
“A prodigy with a crazy obsession,” Darren echoed, mirroring Barry's tone, emphasizing the urgency of the matter.
Fiona's eyes darted from one boy to the next, disbelief etching her features, a mix of shock and confusion playing out on her face. The boys seemed to revel in the drama of the revelation, enjoying the suspense they'd created. Her face mirrored a spectrum of emotions, ending with a hint of panic. It was as if she had stumbled into a realm of complexities that surpassed the ordinary drama of academy life. The revelation hung in the air, and Fiona's silent question lingered – what on earth had she gotten herself into?
Claire and Evie shared a quick, knowing glance, the kind that spoke volumes without uttering a single word. They were privy to the tangled web of my past with Puriel, yet the unspoken agreement hung heavily in the air – it was a story that couldn't be told.
“Don't listen to them,” I chimed in, offering a wry smile to Fiona. “Simply,” I began, adopting a nonchalant tone. “Me and her have a past. But I can't explain what it is. You don't need to worry. It's just that I can't train you for too long," I explained briefly, trying to downplay the complexity of the situation. 'Yeah, I can't train you for too long since she'll think that I'm planning to corrupt you and she will accuse me of this and that as usual,' I thought, my inner monologue revealing the frustrating dance I had to perform in the delicate balance between being a devil and trying to do the right thing.
Being a devil came with its own set of challenges, chief among them the constant suspicion and skepticism from both light and mortal realms. No matter my intentions, the goddess always assumed I was up to mischief, and mortals were quick to dismiss my words as lies. It was a melancholic realization that even in the pursuit of good, the shadows of my true nature cast doubts.
The trio shot me a collective judgmental look, their expressions echoing a mix of surprise and annoyance. “You have a past with her yet you didn't tell us?” Barry complained, not holding back his frustration. A distinct frown etched across his forehead, signaling his discontent.
“What kind of mentor are you? Why did you never say that?” Ion chipped in, pulling off a dramatic act as if he were a character in some daytime soap opera who just caught his partner cheating. Darren, standing by, shook his head from side to side, his disappointment clear.
“Let's forget about it, okay? I don't have time for this,” I interjected, attempting to steer the conversation away from the brewing drama. I gestured for them to drop it, hoping to avoid unnecessary complications.
”C'mon, say something. Entertain us," Darren teased with a smirk, the mischievous glint in his eyes suggesting he was enjoying the unfolding theatrics. Ion and Barry, flanking him on either side, shot me pleading looks, their gaze practically screaming, “Spill it out, spill it out!”
I cringed in disgust at the notion of being their entertainment. “Uh… No,” I stated flatly, a clear frown on my face. Why should I, a devil, be at their beck and call, ready to entertain like some circus act? It irked me that they assumed I'd play along with their whims just for a good laugh.
The trio exchanged disappointed glances, seemingly let down by my refusal to become the star of their impromptu show. I could almost hear their collective sigh, as if they were thinking, "Well, there goes our entertainment for the day." But I wasn't about to play the clown for their amusement. Sometimes, being the devil meant maintaining a certain level of dignity, even when dealing with the antics of mortals.
Their disappointed faces mirrored the abrupt end of our conversation. The trio had hoped for a juicy revelation, a morsel of drama to spice up their day, but I wasn't playing along. Their collective sighs and downcast expressions told me they were genuinely let down by my refusal to be their source of entertainment. However, a second later, their hopeful gaze returned to me.
A sudden clap disrupted the air, and Claire took center stage. “Okay, you guys should stop being a bother. Don't waste his time," she asserted, a firmness in her voice matching the displeased frown on her face. Claire wasn't about to let their antics disrupt the natural flow.
“Ugh, why do you always destroy our happiness?” Ion hissed, a deep frown etched across his face, clearly displeased with Claire's intervention.
"Even though you are our team leader, that doesn't mean you have the right to control us outside of battle, you know," Barry chimed in with a pout, challenging the unspoken authority Claire seemed to wield.
“Yeah! This is our right!” Darren declared with a defiant tone, echoing Barry's sentiment and highlighting their shared belief in personal freedom.
Evie added her perspective, “If you guys keep going like that, Dr. Allen might decide to switch to his crazy mentor mode next time. He will torture all of you," she said, delivering the warning with a calm demeanor that only heightened its impact.
"Well, that's my plan," I chimed in with an evil smirk, enjoying the momentary shudder that ran through the trio.
Their eyes widened, and a collective gasp escaped their lips, as if the mere thought of my "crazy mentor mode" was enough to send a chill down their spines.
