The abrupt shout echoed through the room, leaving both me and Celia startled. Before we could utter a word, Larry jumped from his seat, maneuvering behind me as if I were his impromptu shield.
“Demons? All of them? Are they your soldiers? Did you bring them here to the human world? What if they eat me?” he babbled, panic etched across his face as his gaze darted nervously between my pets.
Red tilted his head in bemusement. “We don't eat humans. Our sustenance comes from His Highness. Otherwise, I would have snacked on you when we first met in that empty warehouse,” he stated matter-of-factly.
Larry's confusion deepened as he tried to recall the peculiar encounter. “That empty warehouse?” he echoed, brows furrowing in concentration.
“Yeah, you almost touched my fur, don't you remember?” Red nudged his memory with a sly grin, his bushy tail wagging enthusiastically.
Suddenly, Larry's eyes widened with comprehension. The lightbulb moment had arrived. His frown transformed into an expression of realization. “Wait… You're that fiery dog demon,” he uttered, a note of surprise softening his features.
Red, delighted to be recognized, responded with a proud grin, his tail swaying like an animated flame. “Bingo! That's me! His Highness even gave me a name – Red,” he declared, radiating a sense of accomplishment as if receiving a grand accolade.
Larry's gaze shifted between Red and me, piecing together the connections between the creature and the peculiar events in the empty warehouse. He seemed to have accepted the revelation, albeit with a lingering sense of disbelief.
“Now you know. Don’t worry, they won't eat you,” I reassured him. They're loyal and have their quirks, but they won't harm you,” I explained, hoping to ease his newfound concerns about being devoured by demons. “You're not on the menu,” I added.
Larry's face lit up with gratitude, and a warm grin spread across his lips. "Thank you, Red!" he exclaimed happily, closing the gap between them and wrapping his arms around the fiery demon in a heartfelt embrace.
Larry couldn't resist the temptation to engage with Red in a more playful manner. With a joyful expression, he crouched down and began scratching behind Red's ears, eliciting blissful canine expressions from the demon. Red's tail wagged furiously, and he leaned into the scratches, savoring the human's touch.
"Who's the good boy?" Larry asked with enthusiasm, his voice filled with genuine delight. He continued to playfully scratch and pat Red, creating an unexpected but heartwarming scene of camaraderie between a human and a demon. The room echoed with the sounds of Red's contented purrs.
Celia's arrival brought an air of casual camaraderie to the room. Her plate of sandwiches, neatly arranged and visually appealing, stood in stark contrast to the remnants of my pathetic breakfast. As she settled beside me, her observation about Red's and Larry's newfound connection drew my attention.
"Oh, you seem really close to Red," she remarked with a teasing smile.
Larry, with a gleam of happiness in his eyes, eagerly confirmed, "Yeah. He saved me from a demon once." However, a flicker of regret crossed his face, and he hastily covered his mouth, realizing he might have divulged more than intended. "Opss," he added sheepishly.
I took the opportunity to assure Larry that the secrets were already out. "Don't worry, she already knows about you," I said, nonchalantly finishing the last bite of my breakfast and leaving an empty plate in front of me.
Larry's complaint about my disclosure brought a faux frown to his face. "Why did you tell her? It's a secret between us," he whined, the pitch of his voice resembling that of a disgruntled child.
Celia chimed in with an amused grin. "Don't worry. I won't tell anyone. My brother is a demon lord, and his secret is safe with me. Let alone yours," she assured, her words accompanied by a soothing demeanor.
Caught in the middle of a dilemma—whether to take one of sandwiches or to continue resisting the allure of the food—I found my mouth engaging in a conversation of its own accord. "Besides, I already knew you were a demon hunter a long time ago. Long before yesterday’s accident. If not, how could I say your full name at the prom party," I admitted in a nonchalant tone, attempting to play off the revelation.
Larry's sudden realization hit him like a ton of bricks. "Ahhhh!" he screamed, pointing accusingly at me, his face contorted in annoyance. "That's right! I remember that! You called my full name and took me flying. I almost threw up because of that! So, you did it on purpose! I couldn't sleep all night because of that, ya know!" he complained with genuine irritation.
I shrugged, nonchalantly grabbing one of the sandwiches. Taking a satisfying bite, I responded, "It was not entirely on purpose, you know?" My words, though seemingly casual, carried a hint of mischief.
"So half of it?" Larry sought clarification, his eyes narrowing in suspicion.
I grinned, acknowledging the truth. "Well, maybe a quarter. It was more of a spur-of-the-moment thing. I couldn't resist a bit of dramatic flair. But hey, you got a memorable experience out of it, didn't you?" I chuckled, amused by his vexed expression.
Larry crossed his arms, clearly not fully convinced. "Memorable is an understatement. I still have nightmares about it," he grumbled, his annoyance evident.
Celia, thoroughly enjoying the banter, chimed in with a teasing smile. "You're lucky it wasn't a one-way ticket to the moon. At least you got a scenic detour over the city."
Larry shot her a mock glare. "Very funny, Celia.”
This time, I had the upper hand, and I shot him a triumphant look. He retaliated with a flat stare, clearly annoyed by my revelation.
Without saying a word, he snatched one of the sandwiches and took a bite, grumbling under his breath, "I was afraid for nothing." The annoyance in his tone was hard to miss, and I couldn't help but revel in the small victory.
