After that conversation, I continued to wolf down my half-cooked meal. Celia returned to her seat, eying my culinary creation on her plate with a mix of skepticism and amusement.
"Adding salt and pepper has magically transformed this pathetic breakfast," she teased, taking a bite and forcing a smile. "If you ever joined a cooking academy, they'd probably kick you out within the first day."
I chuckled, a forkful of scrambled eggs halfway to my mouth. "That's exactly why I stay far away from any cooking academy. Don't want to subject them to my questionable culinary skills."
Foxy, sitting beside Celia, joined in the banter. "Maybe you should start a 'Cooking for Demons' academy and take Master as your number one pupil, Celia."
“Nope, I won’t have time for that,” I said with a cringe and picked the sausage with my fork. My gaze was on the food as if I admired it. “I’m happy enough with this cooking skill. As long it’s edible, it’s good enough for me,” I declared before I shoved the innocent sausage into my mouth.
Our chat and jokes filled in the kitchen until an unexpected interruption occurred—the doorbell rang. The three of us exchanged puzzled glances. It was still morning, and we weren't expecting anyone. I set down my fork, my food only half-eaten, and decided to investigate.
"I'll get it," I announced, pushing back my chair and making my way to the front door. Foxy quickly turned into her fox form.
Upon opening it, I was greeted by the sight of Larry, standing there with an infectious grin. "Morning, Buddy!" he exclaimed.
I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at the unexpected visitor. "Larry, it's still early. What brings you here?" I inquired, the door slightly ajar.
His grin widened. "Just thought I'd drop by. Got some news to share."
“Come in.” I motioned for him to come in, returning to the kitchen with Larry in tow. Celia and Foxy eyed him curiously, and I offered a shrug. "Looks like our morning just got a bit more interesting."
Larry took a seat, and I returned to my breakfast, eager to hear what had prompted his early visit.
But rather than speak, Larry's eyes lingered on the half-eaten breakfast. "Have you eaten breakfast? Do you need me to make something for you?" I gestured toward the questionable feast on the table.
A mischievous glint sparkled in Larry's eyes as he replied, "If it's Celia's, maybe I'll accept it. But I know your cooking is not convincing, and my mom's looks better than this, so no thank you." He grinned innocently, his refusal accompanied by a playful jab.
My response was a flat stare. "As long as it's edible, it's good enough, ya know," I stated, a hint of annoyance in my tone. I took a defiant bite of my toast, proving its "edibility."
Celia joined the banter, aiming a playful elbow at Larry. "Come on, don't be too harsh. Ethan's cooking might not win any awards, but it won't kill you."
Larry chuckled in response, "That's what worries me. I don't want to die from a half-burned sausage."
Celia interjected, "His cooking is indeed unique. It possesses a certain... charm."
I shot her a bemused look, unsure whether to take it as a compliment or not. Larry, however, seemed to interpret it differently, suppressing a laugh. "Charm, huh? Well, I'll pass on that kind of charm for now."
"Did you come here just to tease me? In this early morning?" I curled an eyebrow at Larry, half amused and half irritated by his unexpected visit.
He flashed me a grin, replying, "Partly." Larry always had a way of injecting a dose of playful banter into any situation.
Before I could prod further, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a paper bag, placing it on the table. "Oh right, before I start," he announced with a hint of theatricality. "I brought you guys sandwiches," he announced.
Celia immediately sprang from her seat. "I'll unwrap them and arrange them on the plate," she offered, her hand already reaching for the bag.
"Thanks, I also need some since I haven't had breakfast," Larry declared with a mischievous grin, a glint of mischief in his eyes.
I shot him a mock glare. "You have a habit of showing up unannounced and hungry, don't you?"
Larry feigned innocence. "Guilty as charged and I am proud of it."
I replied with a wry smile. "I’m speechless.”
Celia hummed a cheerful tune as she expertly unwrapped the sandwiches in the kitchen, leaving Larry and me alone at the table with my pets and Foxy. I shot Larry a flat stare, a mixture of curiosity and irritation playing on my features.
"So, what brings you here besides mocking my cooking skills?" I quipped, a hint of playful annoyance in my voice.
Larry grinned, leaning in slightly as if sharing a secret. "Oh, that's just a bonus," he teased, glancing toward the kitchen to make sure Celia was still engrossed in her sandwich arrangements.
"Alright, spill it. What's the real reason for this surprise morning visit?" I pressed, trying to keep the amusement out of my tone.
Larry's expression shifted, taking on a more serious note. "I wanted to let you know about the elders. I managed to get them out safely. They're all healthy and accounted for. There's one who got injured, but it's not life-threatening. He might need some time to recover, but he's stable," he assured me, his words carrying a sense of relief.
"That's great news. I appreciate you taking care of that, Larry," I acknowledged, genuine gratitude in my voice once I remembered how fuck up last night.
He waved it off casually. "No big deal. Just doing my part. And hey, it gave me an excuse to drop by and check if your cooking skills have miraculously improved overnight."
I rolled my eyes, but a smile tugged at the corners of my lips.
