The Incubus System Chapter 864. Acting Innocent

The Incubus System Chapter 864. Acting Innocent

I scrambled to correct the composition of my posture, standing straighter as if preparing for some unexpected inspection. The goofy grin that had adorned my face moments ago vanished, replaced by a carefully crafted expression of stern neutrality. After all, how was one supposed to react when a demon hunter, of all people, showed up unannounced at their doorstep?

"M-My apologies, sir," I stammered, feigning a mix of surprise and trepidation. It was a performance, a facade of normalcy. "I thought you were someone else. What brings you to my house, sir demon hunter?" I continued, injecting just the right amount of quiver into my voice, as if I were a mere mortal facing the extraordinary.

Nathan seemed to size up the situation, his eyes keen and calculating. His presence exuded an air of authority. I couldn't help but wonder what had led Nathan to my doorstep.

Red was quick to respond to Nathan's presence. He bared his tiny teeth, a stark departure from his usual affable demeanor when Larry was around. A silent protest, a declaration of displeasure directed at the unexpected guest. I, however, waved my hand down in a calming motion, silently urging Red to stand down.

At the same time, I instinctively reached out with my telepathic abilities to Foxy and Celia. The connection snapped into place effortlessly, a silent conversation poised to unfold.

'Nathan is here! Foxy, take Jill with you and hide. Celia, just pretend it's only us here,' I urgently instructed through the telepathic link, my thoughts resonating with an air of secrecy and urgency.

Before they could respond, I severed the telepathic connection. For now, my mission was clear—keep Nathan engaged and oblivious to Foxy's maneuvering with Jill. Time was of the essence, and every passing moment increased the chances of our secret slipping through the cracks.

Nathan wasted no time with pleasantries. "Did someone break into your house? Or did you hear that noise?" he queried, his voice direct and unyielding.

I shook my head from side to side, adopting an air of innocence. "No, sir," I replied smoothly, masking the frantic mental activity swirling beneath the surface. "I haven't received any guests tonight," I added, weaving a thread of normalcy into the narrative.

Nathan's gaze, sharp and discerning, bore into mine. His head tilted ever so slightly, a silent interrogation in motion. "Are you home alone?" he probed once more, his questions cutting through the air like a blade.

"There are my sis and my pets," I declared, attempting to divert Nathan's attention from any potential clandestine activities happening behind me.

This time, Nathan chose not to respond with words. Instead, he opted for a more physical approach, grabbing my shoulders with a grip that suggested he meant business. The subtle nudge was an unspoken command to move aside, to grant him access to the inner sanctum of my house. However, I had no intentions of complying, my feet rooted firmly to the ground. Despite the supposed evident difference in our physical strengths, I stood on my ground, determined not to yield an inch to the looming demon hunter.

"You need a warrant if you want to search my house, sir," I asserted, my tone unwavering and laced with a firm resolve. The rules of engagement were crystal clear—no warrant, no entry.

Nathan shot me a glare, his eyes narrowing in a display of frustration. "I don't want to search your house; I just want to check and make sure there are no demons here," he clarified, a hint of exasperation in his voice.

I knit my brows in a faux display of confusion. "Demons?" I echoed, as if the notion of creatures invading my house was entirely alien to me.

Nathan didn't waste time with elaborate explanations. "Yes. We just received word that some demons are still lingering around after what happened this morning," he divulged, his words sharp and to the point. With a curt motion, he attempted to push me to the side again, his determination evident. This time, I yielded, feigning compliance as I shifted my body to allow him entry. It was a calculated gamble—I needed him inside, but not before ensuring that Foxy had successfully executed the evacuation plan with Jill.

Just as Nathan crossed the threshold, Celia emerged from the kitchen, blissfully unaware of the unfolding scene. "Who is it, brother?" she inquired, her voice dripping with feigned ignorance. However, her nonchalant demeanor crumbled into stunned silence as her gaze fell upon Nathan's unmistakable demon hunter uniform.

Nathan, unfazed by Celia's startled reaction, continued his mission with relentless focus. "I'm here to ensure there are no demons lurking around," he stated, his tone unwavering.

Celia's eyes widened as the gravity of the situation sunk in. I shot Celia a fleeting look, a silent plea for her to maintain the façade of ignorance a little longer.

"Oh, demons?" Celia echoed, a poorly concealed attempt at acting innocent.

"Don't worry. I won't be long. I just wanted to check for a moment," Nathan assured, a fleeting promise that hung in the air like a question mark. His words were quick, carrying an urgency that mirrored the ticking clock of our urban fantasy secret. A sidelong glance at Red, still baring his tiny teeth in silent protest, revealed the tension in the room. "Just make sure your stupid pets don't bother me," he added, a thinly veiled threat dripping with the authority of a seasoned demon hunter.

With that, Nathan forged ahead into the heart of my home, his determined steps echoing through the space. His gaze swept the surroundings, a Demon Compass in hand. As he meticulously inspected each corner, I held my breath, the seconds ticking by in agonizing slowness.

Celia and I exchanged glances, a silent communication that spoke volumes in the language of secrecy. A small, triumphant smile graced Celia's lips, telling me that Foxy had successfully orchestrated Jill's disappearance. While Nathan, engrossed in his mission, seemed to find nothing amiss. His Demon Compass didn't waver.
