"Very well," Xalgrim affirmed, sealing the agreement with a satisfaction that mirrored my own.
"Okay, bye then," I said hastily, eager to escape the dissonance of her screams that echoed like nails on a chalkboard. Without wasting a moment, I conjured another portal, this time leading to my palace—specifically, my office. The sooner I distanced myself from the shrill symphony of a mortal's despair, the better.
Exiting the portal into my office, the familiar ambiance enveloped me. The dark opulence of the room, adorned with shadows and demonic symbols, greeted me like an old friend. It was my sanctuary, a place where I usually delved into the intricacies of ruling my palace and territory, my realm. However, the sight that met my eyes was anything but ordinary.
There, behind my imposing desk, sat my double—the idiotic doppelgänger of myself. Ivy stood beside him, holding a stack of documents. Instead of the usual serious and focused demeanor I expected from a lord of wrath, my double was engaged in an act of sheer absurdity. He spun around in my expensive chair, the kind usually reserved for important matters, like plotting schemes or intimidating my subjects.
I cringed. A frown on my forehead. "What in the abyss is going on here?" I muttered under my breath, the confusion etched on my face.
My double, caught in the act of juvenile revelry, finally noticed my arrival. He halted the dizzying spin and grinned at me with a devil-may-care attitude.
"Well, well, look who decided to show up," my double chimed in with a mocking tone. "Ivy was just enlightening me on the joys of paperwork, but I figured spinning in your fancy chair was a more entertaining pursuit."
I sighed, a mixture of irritation and amusement bubbling within me. "You're supposed to manage the realm, not turn my office into a playground."
"I've got everything under control. Plus, a little fun never hurt anyone," he retorted with a wink.
Once Ivy looked at me, the weariness etched on Ivy's face immediately transformed into a radiant expression of relief. "Your Highness!" she exclaimed, her exhaustion momentarily forgotten, and rushed over to greet me with a warm hug.
Returning the embrace, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for Ivy's unwavering dedication. She had been shouldering the burden of managing my chaotic double, ensuring the realm continued to function in my absence. Her commitment to the realm's stability was evident in every gesture.
As we parted from the hug, Ivy's gaze bore into mine with a mix of hope and desperation. "Please tell me you're back. Tell me your mission is complete," she pleaded, her tone revealing the toll the situation had taken on her.
I took a deep breath, grappling with the weight of the unfulfilled mission. "Unfortunately, my mission has not been completed," I admitted with a tinge of regret. "I just returned to ask for your assistance. I need you to instruct some servants to prepare and deliver a specific tonic to the Malifex Clan. One hundred bottles each, and it must be done as swiftly as possible," I explained, laying out the urgency of the situation.
Ivy's expression shifted, absorbing the information. "A hundred bottles? What kind of tonic is this, and why such a large quantity?" she inquired, her curiosity piqued.
"The Malifex Clan needs it for their new bride. It's essential for maintaining her health and ensuring a successful union," I clarified, intentionally leaving out the unconventional nature of the situation. Ivy, accustomed to navigating the intricacies of the demonic realm, didn't press further, accepting the explanation without raising an eyebrow.
"What do you want to send them?" Ivy inquired, her hands poised with a quill over a parchment.
"Fertility tonic, vitality tonic, and elixir of health," I responded briskly, leaning against the edge of my desk. "Include a note specifying the suitable consumption times for her health and a quick recovery from pregnancy. Add a message that say if they require more, they can send their request to us," I instructed, emphasizing the urgency.
Ivy scribbled down the details efficiently. As she absorbed the information, her eyes flickered with curiosity. "Does this mean they have found their bride? Or did you find one for them?" she probed, casting a sidelong glance in my direction.
“Yeah. I just gave them one,” I affirmed, a hint of discomfort in my expression. “It's just…” I cringed slightly. “The bride is a little fragile,” I admitted. “So, yeah, I need to ensure that this bride can produce as many children as possible. Those tonics are crucial for that," I explained, choosing my words carefully.
Ivy's frown deepened as she absorbed the information. "Did you force her?" she ventured, her concern evident. Knowing my usual methods, she couldn't help but question the circumstances surrounding this particular arrangement.
"Yup," I confirmed, my tone lacking any remorse. It was a departure from my usual practice, and Ivy's reaction was unsurprising.
She leveled a flat stare at me. "Is she from the mortal realm?" she pressed, seeking clarification.
"Yup!" I repeated, offering little in the way of additional details.
"But the king knows about this, right?" she sought reassurance, a hint of skepticism in her tone.
"I already got his permission, so you don't need to worry," I assured her, closing the distance between us. As I did, I couldn't help but sense a lingering concern in her expression. "There's only one thing I haven't done," I admitted, a wry smile playing on my lips.
My actions were swift as I pushed Ivy onto the table, guiding her to lie down. With a certain level of mischief playing in my eyes, I gently parted her legs, the mischievous smirk on my face hinting at the direction this reward was heading.
"I need to give you a reward for dealing with this stupid double of mine," I declared, my tone suggestive and laced with playful intent.
Well, like father, like son, I guess.
