Sighing, I finished off the last sip of my coffee, savoring the bittersweet taste that lingered on my tongue. It had been a long and eventful morning, and despite the caffeine coursing through my veins, I couldn't shake off the lingering fatigue that clung to me like a stubborn shadow.
Though I hoped that the coffee and my breakfast, a simple egg sandwich, would be enough to alleviate my sleepiness, it seemed I had underestimated its grip on me. The drowsiness still persisted, albeit not as intensely as before.
Celia, ever the nagging voice of reason, seized the opportunity to pester me about taking a break and giving in to some much-needed rest. "You really should take a break. Your body needs it," she insisted, her concerned tone laced with a touch of annoyance. I rolled my eyes in response, half-tempted to brush off her concerns and soldier on with my day. But deep down, I knew she was right. Ignoring my body's pleas for rest would only lead to more exhaustion in the long run.
Reluctantly, I made my way upstairs, my footsteps echoing in the quietness of the house. The thought of slipping under the covers and surrendering to a blissful slumber enticed me, even as a part of me grumbled at the idea of succumbing to weakness. If by some bizarre twist of fate, I transformed into a cow like my late father used to say, I would wholeheartedly blame Celia for urging me to rest.
Reaching my room, I pushed the door open and stepped inside, greeted by the familiar ambiance that surrounded me. The soft glow of sunlight seeped through the curtains, casting gentle shadows across the room.
But just as I was about to succumb to the embrace of my bed, a familiar chime disrupted the tranquil atmosphere. My phone, lying innocently on the bedside table, lit up with a message notification. Curiosity piqued, I picked it up and unlocked the screen to see who had sent me a message. It was from Larry.
The message flashed across the screen, displaying Larry's name followed by his playful words:
Larry: So, when will you come here? I plan to order pizza for us. What do you want? Pepperoni? Cheese?
Confusion knitted my brow as I read his message. Why would he be inviting me over? It wasn't like we had made any plans or discussed. Was he just in the mood for some pizza and casual hanging out? Questions buzzed in my mind, and without hesitation, I typed out my response.
Me: Go to your place for what?
As I hovered my finger over the send button, a sudden realization struck me like a bolt of lightning. Memories flooded back, reminding me of the promise about playing video games together.
"Oh, crap!" I exclaimed, my panic growing. A sheepish grin spread across my face as I quickly backtracked on my response. Deleting my previous message, I typed out a new one, infused with enthusiasm.
Me: I'm on my way! I'll swing by the pizza shop before heading to your place. Also, don't worry about the drinks, I'll take care of it!
A wave of guilt washed over me for forgetting our gaming session. Larry was always there for me, and the least I could do was treat him to some delicious pizza. Besides, with my teleportation skill, I could make the delivery time of any regular pizza service seem like a snail's pace.
Setting my phone down, I darted off to the bathroom for a quick shower, eager to freshen up. The water cascaded over me, washing away the weariness that had plagued my body, leaving me invigorated and ready for action. As I towel-dried my hair and got dressed in a comfortable t-shirt and jeans with my Demon’s Clothes, my phone chimed with a new message notification.
Larry: Wow! You actually remembered! I'm impressed, man. I was starting to think you'd forgotten all about me. Good news, though. My mom just restocked the fridge yesterday, so no need to worry about the drinks!
A grin spread across my face as I read Larry's reply. With a surge of energy, I grabbed my phone and typed a quick response.
Me: Of course, I remembered, buddy! Be there in a flash.
"Well, I guess it's time to pay Larry a visit," I mumbled to myself, a hint of excitement bubbling up inside me. It was refreshing to have something to look forward to that was unrelated to my duties as a demon lord or my responsibilities as a student. This was just a simple gathering of friends, a chance to indulge in some carefree fun like any other guy my age.
With my phone and my wallet securely tucked away in my pocket, I made my way downstairs to grab my shoes. As much as I loved the convenience of teleportation, I knew it would be best to make a proper entrance at Larry's house. It wouldn't do to startle him with my shoes mysteriously disappearing the moment I arrived.
"Celia, I'm heading over to Larry's place. No need to worry about making my lunch," I announced as I reached the ground floor, slipping on my shoes with a quick motion.
"Didn't you say you wanted to sleep?" Celia's voice chimed in from the living room where she was engrossed in a TV show. I could sense a hint of disapproval in her tone as if my decision to go out was an inconvenience to her.
I turned to face her, a mischievous grin spreading across my face. "Did I say that?" I replied, feigning innocence. "Well, but you know how it is, plans change, and I can't refuse Larry."
Celia shook her head, clearly amused and exasperated by my spontaneous change of heart. "Well, don't stay up too late."
I waved her off dismissively. "Don't worry, I'll manage. Besides, a little sleep deprivation never hurt anyone," I quipped, half-jokingly.
As I bent down to put on my shoes, I felt a presence at my side. It was Red. His vibrant red fur stood out against the muted tones of the room, and there was a glint of pride in his eyes.
"That Larry guy, I saved him yesterday," Red announced proudly, his tail wagging excitedly.
