Interrupting our conversation, Celia, appeared by my side, breaking the flow of our exchange. She held out a steaming mug of warm coffee, the fragrant vapor rising from its surface in delicate wisps. The rich aroma wafted towards me, tickling my senses and enticing me with its inviting warmth.
"Here you go, brother," Celia chirped, her voice filled with a playful tone. She extended the mug towards me, the ceramic handle delicately nestled within her grasp.
“Thanks.” I reached out and accepted the mug from Celia, feeling the warmth radiating through the porcelain and seeping into my fingertips. The fragrant aroma of the coffee intensified as I brought the rim of the mug closer to my lips, taking in the heavenly scent.
I raised the mug to my mouth and took a careful sip, allowing the smooth, robust flavor spread across my tongue, awakening my senses and chasing away the remnants of drowsiness that lingered within me. The caffeine coursed through my veins, igniting a newfound energy and clarity.
"Even though she didn't mean to hurt you, she could end up hurting you. So you have to be careful,” Ruby continued with a serious expression etched on her face. Her eyes held a hint of concern, showing she genuinely cared about my well-being.
I let out an exasperated sigh, feeling the weight of her words settle on my shoulders. I knew she was only looking out for me, but I couldn't help but feel irritated by her persistent caution. After all, I was no stranger to danger and had faced countless adversaries in my journey through the supernatural realm.
"Fine," I replied, my tone laced with indifference. I wanted this conversation to be over quickly so I could return to my own thoughts and plans. The last thing I needed was someone constantly reminding me of the potential risks that lay ahead.
Ruby's forehead creased with worry, her brows furrowing in frustration. "Ethan, I'm serious," she stressed, her voice tinged with urgency.
"I'm also serious, Ruby," I reiterated, my voice tinged with a hint of annoyance. I took another sip of my coffee, relishing in its warmth and hoping it would help me shake off the tension that had settled within me. "And I already said I'd be careful. What do you expect from me? Do you want me to scream in panic or something?" I couldn't help but let out a dry chuckle at the absurdity of the situation.
Ruby's gaze faltered, her brows furrowing in contemplation.
“Thought so…” I said again with a huff, sipping my coffee.
"Ethan, it's not about panicking or making a scene. It's about understanding the gravity of the situations you might find yourself in. There are forces at play that even we don't fully comprehend," she explained earnestly, her eyes searching mine for any sign of comprehension.
"Mind explaining what you mean by 'forces'?" I prodded, my curiosity getting the better of me. I knew there was more to the story, something she couldn't openly disclose.
Ruby's lips formed a tight line, her expression betraying a mix of frustration and caution. She hesitated for a moment, contemplating her words carefully. Finally, she spoke in a hushed tone, as if afraid someone might overhear.
"There are influential individuals, powerful figures who hold sway over the supernatural realm," she began, her voice laced with a sense of gravity. "They manipulate and shape events to serve their own agendas. They pull the strings from behind the scenes, often going unnoticed by the average person. They are the ones who could use you as a pawn in their game."
"Right," I muttered and took another sip of my coffee, savoring its comforting warmth. I was quite surprised that she went as far as explain it to me. Although only the outline.
Ruby's eyes bore into mine, a mix of concern and frustration evident in her gaze. She leaned forward, her voice laced with urgency. "I know this may sound like nonsense to you, Ethan. But I'm seriously worried about you," she emphasized, her tone pleading for my understanding. "I was trying to warn you of the impending danger, you're acting indifferent," she complained. Her eyes fixed on me showed her seriousness.
My nonchalant expression morphed into a serious one as I locked eyes with Ruby. "Then I will ask you one more time. Should I scream in panic? Or should I just pack up and leave this place, like I did last time?" I retorted, hoping to elicit some common sense from her.
Her eyes widened, and for a brief moment, a flicker of realization crossed her face. It was as if she suddenly grasped the potential consequences of her warning.
A mixture of worry and regret played out in her expression. She opened her mouth to respond, but no words came forth. It was clear that the gravity of her warning had hit home, and she was grappling with the repercussions it might have on our fragile connection.
Leaning back in the chair, I let out a frustrated sigh. "You know, if I have to disappear again, if this place becomes too dangerous for me to stay, then maybe it's time to consider starting anew somewhere else," I grumbled, a tinge of annoyance coloring my voice. I took another sip of my coffee, letting its warmth soothe my thoughts. Of course, that was just my babble. But yeah, if I was still human and didn't know what was going on, I would do that without a doubt.
For a few moments, Ruby sat there in silence, her brows furrowed in deep thought. I could almost see the wheels turning in her mind as she grappled with the weight of my words. It was evident that she was at a loss for a suitable response, unsure of how to address my growing discontentment.
But then, as if a switch had been flipped within her, a transformation washed over Ruby. The sadness that clouded her gaze gave way to a newfound determination. She straightened her posture, her features becoming resolute.
"You're right," she suddenly muttered, her voice filled with conviction. "We should face this calmly, head-on."
