It's prompt challenge season in the arts community. October is FULL of daily drawing challenges of all sorts encouraging people to use the daily prompt for each day of October and be inspired to create something.
I've done lots of different prompt-inspired projects. I used one year a story called Further Still. I made a book called Ickle and Pickle's Prickle Pear Adventure, and worked the daily prompt into every page of the story. I've gathered second hand tshirts and tote bags and painted different prompt inspired designs on each one, combined multiple prompt challenges into the same daily drawings, made a daily comic telling the story of the time I went on a ten day silent meditation retreat, and now I've had the wonderful experience of having a community member build a prompt list called the Jester Prompt Romp that celebrates some awesome original prompts, along with some from other lists I love.
I learned SO MUCH from all these projects and I believe there is enormous value in a consistent creative practice, something prompt challenges can help to build. But I also see enormous value in learning how to take care of my well being and my time. If Fear Of Missing Out and the dreaded FOMO goblin is the only thing pushing me to create, it's okay to let the "rules" of a prompt challenge bend to fit my needs.
I love getting to challenge myself creatively, but the joy of seeing so many other creatives use the Jester Prompt Romp to suit their needs and I've been having SO much fun using it creatively to suit my own. Quelling my innner FOMO goblin might just be my favourite take away from any prompt challenge so far.
Thank you for being here Patrons, and supporting all these wild creative endeavours. You are more brilliantly motivating than the most beautifully curated prompt list and I am so grateful to all of you for your support.
Big love.
