4)          Cleric

.

There was no hesitation.

‘Is this even a question?’

He instantly tapped the Wizard option, selecting his Class without even considering the others.

Magic was awesome, what more could he say?

A new message appeared, floating in a small blue square in the air.

.

[Status updated!]

.

— - Status — -

Name: Alexander Sky

.

Alexander stared at the flood of new messages, his eyes narrowing as he read them.

‘…is there a guide to this system anywhere?’ He decided to check, tapping on each option on the main Status screen.

‘Nice!’ Several new screens floated into existence.

[Levels are achieved through personal growth and achieving greatness]

‘Vaguely helpful, I suppose.’

[Perks are passive powers obtained through Rolling the Perk Lottery. Level Up to earn more Rolls!]

‘Okay, so Perks are like superpowers? That’s neat.’ He wouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

[Abilities are active powers. You may select a new Ability every other Level, up to a maximum of 5!]

‘Got it.’

[You may select new Spells every Level!]

The explanations were succinct, and somewhat helpful, so he couldn’t really complain.

What kind of Wizard would he be, if he needed his hand held everywhere?

He’d figure the rest out on his own.

‘Well, let’s start with you.’ He smiled as he tapped on the Spells icon on his Status.

.

‘Wow… that’s a lot of options.’ He scrolled through the pages, reading through Spell after Spell.

‘Hmm.’ He paused, after spending nearly a dozen minutes reading.

‘Let’s hold off for a minute.’

He decided to check his other options before making any decisions.

.

[Rolling Perk…]

.

The moment he picked the Perk option, it immediately began to Roll, without waiting for his input at all.

.

[Rolling…]

[Rolling…]

[Rolling…]

[Perk Selected!]

[You’ve obtained the 2 Star Perk – Underwater Native]

.

Immediately, Alexander felt his entire body change.

It was incredibly strange, his body morphing beneath him, the very essence of what made him human shifting, ever so slightly.

Instinctively, he was aware of what some of the changes were, but he still tapped on the Perk, pulling up an information screen.

.

[2 Star Perk - Underwater Native]

[The upgraded version of the 1 Star Perk – Underwater Breathing. Grants strong resistance to cold and pressure, ability to breathe underwater, enhanced swimming capabilities, and minor strength and recovery enhancements while in water]

.

“Wow, that’s rad.” Immediately, ideas began to pour in.

‘I can now manage a hero’s escape!’

His goal, first and foremost now that he had superpowers, was to become a Superhero.

It was a childhood dream come true.

While this Perk might not be flashy, it offered him the perfect solution to how he would escape from anyone trying to take him in.

‘I can just dive into a river or the sea, and swim away.’ He wouldn’t need to surface for air, and he could already feel his newly formed innate resistance to cold. It was like his body possessed a second layer of skin, that he could tighten and seal up at will, preventing heat from escaping.

‘Let’s check Abilities.’

.

[Please select an Ability Type]

[Offensive Abilities]

[Defensive Abilities]

[Support Abilities]

.

“Hmm.” Alexander stared at the list for several seconds, before sitting down on his bed, and beginning to think.

He weighed the options carefully, taking time to browse the Spells he was able to pick again, to give himself a full grasp of what choice he should make.

Finally, after debating for several minutes, he made his decision.

.

[Selection - Support Abilities]

.

It was a tough call, but he felt like he made the right decision, based on the limited information he possessed.

.

[Rolling… Please select one of the following Abilities! You may only choose one.]

[2 Star Ability – Summon Cloudling]

[1 Star Ability – Double Jump]

[3 Star Ability – Blink]

.

Alexander blinked as he looked up and down the 3 Abilities he was offered, immediately discounting the 1 Star Ability – Double Jump.

‘Blink, that’s short-range teleportation, right? That’s super Wizard!’ He took a moment to consider the other Ability.

‘Summon Cloudling? Is that some kind of familiar?’ He wasn’t able to pull up any descriptions, because he was pretty sure tapping on any of these Abilities would instantly choose them.

“Teleportation is teleportation.” He shook his head, immediately making his decision.

‘This gives me another option for a hero’s escape!’ The more options, the merrier, in his eyes. A little redundancy never hurt no one!

It didn’t matter how cool the little Cloud familiar was, teleportation was too useful a power to give up!

.

[Selection - 3 Star Ability – Blink]

.

The world abruptly transformed.

Suddenly, Alexander became aware of the space around him, in a depth and way he had never noticed before. It wasn’t so much that his vision had changed, but rather, his spatial awareness had been enhanced, at a supernatural level.

With a simple thought, Alexander stared at his desk and…

‘Blink.’

The world shifted.

“Holy enchilada.” Alexander steadied himself as he grabbed the side of the desk, preventing himself from falling.

He had just teleported.

‘That’s… wow.’ He sat down on the chair, staring at his hands in shock.

It was only now, really, truly hitting him.

This was real.

He sat there quietly for a few seconds, before a small, grim smile appeared on his face.

‘This is real. Comic book or not, this world is real to me.’ A steady gleam of determination lit his eyes.

‘There are real people out there, suffering, that I can help. I can save lives. I can make a real difference.’

Alexander clenched his fists as emotion filled him, before he forced himself to calm down.

He was going to be a Superhero, yes.

Part of that was his own selfish dream… but now, as he reflected on the world he was bound to face…

Alexander made a promise to himself.

‘I’ll be one of the good ones.’

With a steady nod, he flipped back to the Spell selection, and instantly made his choices.

.

(Selection – Barkskin (1 Star))

(Selection – Telekinetic Hand (1 Star))

(Selection – Recovery Aura (1 Star))

.

Barkskin was his defensive Spell of choice, a Spell that gave his skin the resilience and durability of tough, thick tree bark.

Telekinetic Hand was a useful Spell that created an invisible, floating hand that could lift up to 940 lbs. It was also quite versatile in that he could use it to knock people away or as an offensive tool.

Finally, Recovery Aura was a healing Spell that granted ‘Minor Regeneration (1 Star)’ to anyone within a 3 meter radius, including himself.

“Alright.” Boundless energy filled Alexander as he played with the Spells, practicing them in the privacy of his room.

So far, he found that he could cast each Spell multiple times. He wasn’t sure if he had Mana or something different, but he did feel a slight draining sensation with each cast.

‘I think I can cast a total of 16 Spells before I get exhausted?’ He was extrapolating, since he’d only cast 8 times thus far, but he wanted to leave himself with some leeway.

‘Maybe I’ll be able to cast more the higher Level I am?’ It made sense.

Blink, as far as he could tell, didn’t seem to drain him at all, no matter how many times he teleported. It was something to keep in mind, the difference between Abilities and Spells.

“There’s still daylight out.” In fact, it wasn’t even noon yet.

“Oh. Wait.” A realization hit him.

He was supposed to be at school.

He frowned.

Was he willing to return to a life of normalcy, after all this?

He’d already lived through a lifetime of schooling.

‘I should make plans on moving out, ASAP.’ His past life’s independence gave him the knowledge and tools on how to survive on his own.

He didn’t have time for school, not when he knew how dangerous this world was quickly going to become.

“Earning money – aren’t there supposed to be large gangs of criminals, operating here? Hell's Kitchen, right?” He nodded to himself slowly.

Eh, he had superpowers, ones that would only grow with time. He’d worry about a stable income later.

For now…

Alexander checked his pockets, scooping up his savings hidden under a nearby floorboard.

‘About $430.’ That was plenty to work with.

He’d need to make sure he dodged SHIELD/Hydra’s eyes, but…

“Let’s go work on our Hero costume!” It was time to plan for the future!

.

Comments

940 lbs? He could totally lift himself and a motorcycle and Evil Knievel everywhere.
