Book #1

In the year 2442, Earth has become a fractured world, with much of its equatorial zone rendered uninhabitable. Charoen and his younger sister, Jessie, survive in Camp Defiance, a refugee camp outside Oslo, clinging to the margins of a society that glorifies krieg chess—a ruthless, high-tech team sport where players enhance themselves with neural implants and chemical boosters to compete on a battlefield modeled after chess.

When the Steel Furies, a Minor League krieg chess team, host a recruitment fair, the siblings see an opportunity—not to play, but to steal. Their mission: infiltrate the trials, steal the team's files, and disappear. Charoen and Jessie outperform expectations, but in the chaos of their escape, they attract the ire of Markos Svor, a relentless jäger of the Steel Furies.

Back at Camp Defiance, the siblings discover they were pawns in a larger game. Billionaire Virgil—enigmatic, manipulative, and possibly dying—was behind the heist all along, testing them for something greater. He offers them a place on Brutal Deluxe, his newly-formed krieg chess team, dangling an irresistible hook: their father, Charn Chai, a disgraced krieg chess legend, is still alive. If they win their first match, Virgil will arrange contact.

Charoen resists at first, haunted by his father’s infamy—Charn Chai assassinated the Antarctic Emperor during a World Cup Final, a move that reshaped geopolitics and condemned his family to exile. But Jessie is relentless, and the promise of answers is too great to ignore. They join Brutal Deluxe and are thrust into a world of relentless training, brutal sparring sessions, and a team of ambitious misfits. Among them is Beatrice Tremblay, a gifted mörderin—the team’s queen piece—whose interest in Charoen is more than professional.

Their first true test comes with a chance to bypass the lower ranks entirely: a match against the Steel Furies. As they prepare, Jessie takes dangerous risks, unlocking rapid advancement at a cost, while Charoen struggles to accept his growing obsession with the game. During the match, Jessie collapses from her unauthorized training, forcing Charoen to step up. Against all odds, he leads Brutal Deluxe to victory, unlocking new abilities in the process.

In the aftermath, Virgil reveals the full extent of his manipulations—he knew all along that Jessie would break the rules, that Beatrice was drawn to Charoen because of his father, and that pushing them all to their limits would make them stronger. Charoen seethes with resentment but refuses to walk away. With their entry into the Scandinavian Minor Leagues secured, he commits to the fight, vowing to one day turn the tables on Virgil.

Book #2

Seven months after securing their place in the Scandinavian Minor League, Brutal Deluxe fights for promotion to the Premier League. Charoen, now the team’s strategic anchor, struggles under Virgil’s control, Jessie’s reckless ambition, and Beatrice’s increasingly personal interventions. With only two games left, they must win both to advance.

Against the Kalevipoeg Killers, Charoen disobeys Virgil’s orders, nearly dying before Beatrice intervenes. Their victory intensifies speculation about their romantic connection, culminating in a tense, unspoken tryst. The next match against the Helheim Harbingers is a brutal clash against the synchronized Hel Twins. Despite a narrow win, Charoen suffers a brain injury, which Virgil exploits to fuel his pro-clone rights campaign.

Fulfilling his promise from Book #1, Virgil takes Charoen to the Antarctic, where he arranges for Charn Chai, Charoen’s father, to be brought out of cryogenic suspension. Charn Chai proves to be scornful and unrepentant for the damage his actions inflicted upon his family, leaving Charoen shaken after their encounter.

Brutal Deluxe’s final match pits them against the undefeated Vaeringjar Vikings, who have dominated the Minor League for years. Xander the Great, their ruthless leader, recruits Beatrice and deploys her against her former teammates. Further, he marks Charoen as his primary target, recognizing him as the heart of Brutal Deluxe. The battle is merciless, pushing the team to the brink. Charoen, despite overwhelming odds, makes a desperate stand, drawing enemy fire and creating an opening that allows Brutal Deluxe to seize victory. His sacrifice ensures their promotion, but he falls, his last act one of defiance.

In the aftermath, Virgil immortalizes Charoen as a symbol of clone rights. Behind closed doors, Brutal Deluxe’s doctors retrieve something from his remains. In a hidden lab, Virgil watches as a figure begins to take shape inside a cloning tank. The game is far from over.

I really love this series. I'm sad that it's only getting one more book but I totally get that it's based on interest from fans

I read this series and depending on how you handle the echo things it may be my favourite yet. I read both books in one delirious day. I just love the chess direction and I would love it if you could expand and add some more openings and other chess terminology but maybe that's just me. I also loved reading you're different series over the summer and was fiending for each new chapter.
