Pricing Update + iOS Apple shenanigans
Added 2025-05-04 13:16:59 +0000 UTCHappy Sunday morning, everyone, if it's Sunday morning where you're at.
I put up a poll a couple of days ago and the results are in: 85% of voters are fine with a price increase from $8 to $10.
The tier was originally created at $10, but I dropped it to $8 as an apology when I reduced chapter posting to 1/week. Now that we're ramping up to 3/week minimum, with most weeks probably hitting 5/week, I think it's fair to return to the original pricing.
The way this works is that you'll receive a notification and have 30 days at the previous $8 tier. Basically price updates take effect one renewal cycle after the change. If this doesn't work for you, I absolutely understand, and sincerely thank you for your support up till this point.
iOS Nonsense
A Patron asked why their monthly fee was $11.50 instead of $8. I dug into the matter, and it turns out that jump is due to the IOS Apple store fee. Patreon sent me an email about it a few months back:
Hi,
We’re writing to let you know that your Patreon has been updated to use Apple’s in-app purchase system. This means that all purchases of memberships and shop items through the Patreon iOS app will now include Apple’s 30% App Store fee. As a reminder, Apple’s fees do not affect your existing members. You also have the ability to choose how Apple’s fees impact your prices and earnings through the iOS app. You may adjust your selection any time in your settings.
Which means I can choose to eat the 30% fee by paying $2.30 out of the $8 to Apple, or add the surcharge on top.
Thanks, Apple.
So, if you're seeing higher fees, you might want to consider canceling and re-enrolling directly through the Patreon website.
Cheers,
Phil
