Which ways of coloring characters do you prefer? I'm seriously questioning for my next game.

Comments

B all day.

PervMASTER

True, without outline makes your work look like[ cartoon nextwork], bit kiddish. with outline makes your work look bit [adult swim.]

Dong

I think A works better for illustrations and B for animated stuff.

Rafanás

B) With outlines (✿◠‿◠)

Thank you Allwoodman. I do my best at least... I think it's a lot of money though. I say to myself it's compensation for the hard years of the past and the future.

Thank you AleM. All this story is so unexpected.

Congratulations, you deserve it!!!

allwoodman

Congrats David !!

maximus

Thank you for this critic. It made me realize I have to find another way. I did a third one. I show it very soon.

Oh! I have put the last version of the game on a site: <a href="http://davidgoujard.com/btd.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://davidgoujard.com/btd.html</a> I will write a post about it. Nothing new, It's just suppose to be a good english.

Thank you Gasjg!

Thank you for your ideas. Colored outlines is a possibilty. I think I found a way. You'll see very soon. It's not colored lines but thinner lines.

I have find a mix between the two. I show you soon.

Congrats !!!

Thanos Farek Seid

Congrats on reaching your goal of $4000 David!

I love your style. But the outlines give the wonderful imaginative cartoon style a more definitive. Like this girl is to good for RL but I could kind of see it :D

Mikey

I think the lines are best used as outlines where the object inside the line is clearly distant from the objects outside the line. For example the lines around the forearm, breasts and face are perfect in B but the colouring of the eyes, lips, and hair are better in A. Also if you look at the staircase in the background of B, that's a good example of mixing the two. It was a difficult choice because the coloured lighting in A is really cool, but in the end I voted for B.

VaSh

Honestly, either or is fine, your style really fits both! But each type(line or no line) really has its pros and cons :)

The lines add an element of detail, plus when animation start to overlap and certain backrounds are close in texture or color shapes become lost and the clarity becomes blurry. I think if you used a dark line of the same color instead of just black might work okay. Like skin tones having a dark shade of orange and hair having a darker outline of brown or yellow.

Brad Cooper

Face with no lines looks better.

Purple Star

I think lines fit best to your style. Keep up the amazing work!

Martin Kragl

It's interesting. The one without outlines almost feels like paper where the one on the right just seems like a normal toon drawing. I'm a fan of both styles and wish there was a third option to have you choose since it should be the style you are looking to achieve.

Austin

Lines give more character to your work.

Don

Hmmm...I like both

Love the one without lines! Its very experimental. You should do what you feel you'd benefit learning from. Art is about the experience right?

famantha

Without outlines is more Samurai Jack style, and seeing as I am on a Samurai Jack kick at the moment, Go for it!

I like that the left girl looks like she's got tan lines on her right boob. I'd love to see bikini marks in that (or some other) cleavage. I think the gal on the left has a cool style that would be cool to expirament with, but the one on the right is in the style that made me love your work in the first place.

B is good but we all want to know what A would look like bouncing around

I've voted B. It looks more 'finished' but tbh both styles have merits

Acidrop66

With B

Borp

B, There's more "weight" with outlines.

gliph13

Definitely B. It's not an oil painting :)

Dubsington

I agree with this. Hair would look better stylistically without the outlines; not much else.

ZERA

B for sure.

No outlines. At all. Looks ways cooler.

Sharkey

B - but i will say without lines with your art style would be super cool for like a superhero comic like i could definitely see spider-man drawn in your style without lines and it would look glorious

B - definitely.

Outlines might help you show off a character's "assets"...

twin

No outlines on the background and hair, but outines on what's remaining ;)

Purple Witch

A has better hair and i don't like the red filter on B but i like B's character better (besides the hair)

Silas7

I voted B, but I think either would work. However I might have chosen A if the pictures where "the same". It feels like B has better quality on some parts compared to A. (could be the outline making it look better :P )

jeeze, way too hard to decide. I like both in different ways! I would say do whichever one is the least work. They both seriously look great!

Jack Shalack

Can I see A but with outlines on the exposed skin only?

Twisted Mystery

B

J24R5W

A's background is more prettier imo, but B character is nice

Thanos Farek Seid

It is always dependent on the situation. The image A is ( related to the background ) better and more natural.

B

Jeremy

I prefer the outlines as it seperates the character from the background, without and it'll look to much like an animated painting to my oppinion.

Nathan

B

Aktymel

I like the outline but prefer the background in A. Breasts look better outlined but the hair doesnt. Maybe adjust the outline colour depending on the area.

Looks more real to me with B which is what I prefer personally

Akumadoken

With outlines seems to be very popular, but it is in my opinion, the safer choice. I enjoy the borderless artstyle, its got character.

I kinda like how the hair and eyes looks without outlines, but the rest of her seems a bit off without them.

Stuart Zellin

So excited for the new game!!

Ragnar The Brave

B definiremos

B

IgnobleMisterD

Definitely B, I think it will make it a lot easier for the eye to follow during animations.

Crawdaddy

I see you did not click the square (I see who vote what). This poll function is very cool. Last year, when i did monthly polls i have to count one by one :)...those days are gone :D

I think somewhere in between would be best ! Outlines make the character stand out but the lighting from the image on the left is far better looking and realistic. This is really a crossroad between something looking like an animated movie and something looking like a comic book. Both have value. My personal taste make me go for A. And which one do YOU prefer, David ?

B

Definitely with outlines, David. It makes the image more defined, stand out more, and look more real. Without the outlines, it appears almost as if the characters are somewhat listless or unfinished. The outlines add a 3D depth to them, and make it easier to focus on the character models./
