Progress Journal, December 2024 #2
Added 2024-12-19 19:26:39 +0000 UTCGreetings Mythicists! I hope your month is going well and your characters like tiny marshmallows in their hot cocoa :)
This is what's going on:

Mythic Offset Edition Is Sailing The High Seas
The offset press edition of Mythic, printed by Print Ninja, will soon arrive at a California port and makes its way to the two distributors who will handle it: Indie Press Revolution and Modiphius.
Both distributors are US based, although there is a possibility that the UK store of Modiphius will host a second run of the book. That will depend on how well this printing sells.
Modiphius currently has pre-sales going here at this link.
Books at both locations should go live by mid to late January!

Micro Mythic Character Crafter
I'm currently working on the One-Page Character Crafter in the Micro Mythic book. Like most of the one-pagers that have appeared in Mythic Magazine, this one is getting some tweaks and adjustments.
I want each one-pager to not only work on their own when used with other RPGs, but to also all work together as one total solo RPG. That requires some fine tuning.
Also, if I want to call this the "Super Simple Solo RPG" then it has to be simple and I have to curb my inclination to run with some ideas. So, I'm trying to pare everything down to its most simplistic while also keeping it fun, useful, and efficient. I think it was Mark Twain who said something like, "I apologize for such a long letter, I didn't have the time to make it shorter" ... there is truth in that, brevity is hard.
At this point, all of the mechanics are contained in 9 one-page rulesets. The main chapter of the book that has those rules is 22 pages long, with most of that being basic explanations for what solo roleplaying is and discussing some core concepts. The rest of the book is chock full of examples, discussion about alternate ways to use the rules, and useful forms.
Mythic Magazine #49 Is Baking In The Oven ... "I Think, Therefore I Mythic"
The latest issue of Mythic Magazine is cooking. It features "The Society Crafter" and "A Guide For New Solo Roleplayers".
I got so into making the last issue of MM that I completely forgot to mention that we crossed the four-year threshold with issue #48! Four years! Well, here we are starting year five and I am stoked :)
The Society Crafter is going to end up being a big pile of random tables, much like The Magical Tradition Generator. The New Solo Roleplayers Guide gets into basic concepts and ideas. It's got some problem solving, like "what to do if you run into this problem", but it also has me talking about the psychology behind solo roleplaying. I couldn't help but get into that, so I hope it's not viewed as a weird tangent. But when someone says, "This can't possibly work. How does it work?" I have a hard time just saying, "Well, you ask a question and roll some dice". I want to explain how it actually works, in your brain. I feel that's where the real magic takes place.
So I apologize in advance if that article gets a bit weird and existential, but it's where my thoughts ran to.
Mythic Roleplaying Second Edition Combat Chapter
I'm currently working on Mythic RPG 2e's Combat chapter. This is a big departure from the original rules, and is based on the Narrative Combat system introduced in the magazine. I've simplified that system to make it run faster. I want combat to feel like everything else in Mythic, where you follow your expectations in the spur of the moment for what you think happens next and Mythic tests it. It's a simple combat system, but I think it has a lot of depth to it and feeds directly into Mythic's narrative strong points. I hope.
Happy Holidays, & Thank You!
Finally, I'd just like to say happy holidays to all of you celebrating one right now, and thank you for being a Mythicist Patron to everyone :) Mythic, and very likely modern oracle style solo roleplaying, would not exist without you and your support. This is an evolution in tabletop roleplaying 20+ years in the making, and it's happened and continues to happen because of you and all of the people around the world who keep discovering the wonders of solo tabletop roleplay.
Thank you for being a part of this community, and for helping me make the kind of stuff that I love to make :)
Happy adventuring!
Comments
Yes, that happens to me sometimes. I tend to play my games in chunks of time when I can, so days if not weeks may go by between scenes sometimes. This leads to me forgetting important details that I may realize later, after other things happen that break the continuity. This used to bother me a lot, and I'd go to lengths to try and fix it. However, these days, I just kind of roll with it and it doesn't bother me. I'll usually go with the current iteration of things, maybe retconning past events, or even just ignore those things ever happened. I've accepted that this is just a natural byproduct of the way I play, and I don't want to do the work of being extra careful because that detracts from the stuff I enjoy most. I like just sitting down and playing, and thinking about it afterward. I'll do something to repair a major continuity conflict, but even that doesn't bother me as much as it used to.

2024-12-27 19:40:51 +0000 UTCNot certain if you'll see this, but I just thought of a question for you after playing a really great adventure this morning: Have you ever gotten completely immersed in a solo RPG adventure, but afterwards realized to your horror that there was a logical or continuity error that needed to be corrected in the adventure you played? If so, what did you do? This has happened to me twice, and thankfully I was able to create a clarification to the narrative that made sense.

2024-12-26 19:21:49 +0000 UTCThank you :) I hope that's what Micro Mythic becomes, used both as a full RPG but also as a toolkit to pick out the one-pagers you need, like how you're using the character crafter now.

2024-12-20 21:47:19 +0000 UTCShipping to Canada almost cost as much as the book does, but it was still worth the pre-order

2024-12-19 21:52:54 +0000 UTCOutstanding - I'm very much looking forward to this stuff! The current version of the one-page character crafter is something I'm using quite a bit at the moment (mostly when I GM but also for solo play) and it's fantastic. Looking forward to seeing where else you go with it.
