Mythic Magazine #39

Happy end of February fellow Mythicists! I have for you what I hope is a ... motivating ... issue!

This volume features:

NPC Evolving Motivation Rules: A system to make NPC behavior more dynamic over time by  tracking their motivations, adjusting them in response to the adventure, and engaging in motivated actions.

Detailed Flowcharts For MGME2e: A redo of the flowcharts from MGME2e for Fate Questions, Random Events, and Scenes, with enough detail to make them table-ready reference tools.

Happy adventuring!

Thank you so much :) I agree, this system fills a gap when it comes to NPC behavior. It's been bothering me for some time that all of the behavior generation focuses on just one moment in time, what does the NPC do right now. Everything else was handled by context and general Mythic processes. However, it felt to me that NPC behavior, especially for important NPCs, could be more dynamic and deserved a mechanic on its own that goes beyond the present moment. So I'm really glad it's clicking with you in this way since that's exactly what I was hoping for. Your Kitra adventure sounds really interesting, and the political dynamic is great. I can definitely see this system livening it up; you never know when Gold of Longtooth will act, and each time they do it would likely redirect the entire adventure.

My sincere compliments for the NPC motivation. This is a splendid piece of design you've crafted. It tackles a problem I've been grappling with for some time. How do I ensure that I remain surprised by the actions NPCs take without exerting too much influence through questioning? I'm a huge fan of your Behavior Check and the skill resolution mechanic. It initiates conversations with important NPCs with precision, relieving me of the burden of excessive deliberation. This addition to the NPC series truly elevates the interaction with NPCs to a higher level. For instance, I recently played an adventure in the Island of Kitra. In my version of Kytra, there's a big bad present who seeks revenge on Governor Veera Gold. I struggled to devise a method to keep track of when and how actions were taken. Additionally, intrigue brewed on the island, sparking a political rivalry between Veera Gold and Sir Terrence Lonthoot. As much as I found this interresting, it was challenging to manage and shape. Due to the complexity, I ended up abandoning the adventure. The mechanic presented in this issue resolves all these problems at once. It piques my curiosity about how the adventure in Kytra will progress and motivates me to pick it up again. And i am sure it will ease many future adventure Excellent work, Tiana.

The NPC Evolving Motivation Rules are very interesting, and they could be a real game changer – I can imagine applying their structure to other fiction elements, for example in those systems that use tags to describe scenes, situation or environments and making them organically evolve over time... 🤔

Perfect timing. I'm trying out the Star Trek Captain's Log and need ways to liven the crew. They were starting out pretty cookie-cutter.

Yay, I'm glad you're enjoying the system and putting it to good use! That's a good idea for a MM article, a villain hierarchy system. I'll add that to the article list for a future poll and we'll see how that flies with everyone.

Tana Pigeon

Yes, that's a good idea. I'll work that up and post it here when it's ready.

I absolutely love this system and am integrating it into my newest adventure right away! For my main villain I got "punish" and my supporting villain got "change". I can't wait to invoke those keywords! I also have a suggestion for a possible future issue of MM if others would find it interesting! I'd love a sort of Villain Hierarchy System, as in creating a main villain, and their major minions and how they relate to the main villain, their own goals, and differences and dynamics with each other.

Great work! Would it be possible to have the two pages flow charts separately on bigger single page pdfs (like A3 for EU or its Us equivalent)?

Stefano Scaglione

Yaay! I've been so excited for this all day thanks to your little preview earlier!
