Mythic Magazine #38

Greetings Mythicists! Happy End Of January to you! Let's mark the occasion with ... a new issue of Mythic Magazine, fresh out of the oven. Piping hot!

First off, I'm going to say that I love the cover Jorge made. I love all his artwork, but sometimes an image comes along that makes me go, "Well now that's just really cool." I asked him to do something based on the world creation article. When I request artwork from Jorge, I like to give him the general idea of what I'm looking for but I don't like giving him specifics because invariably he comes up with something better on his own. Like this time! He is deeply creatively talented.

So there's the cover, really taking the "worlds" concept to heart by breaking dimensional and genre barriers in a sci-fi/western/multi-verse mashup.

Which leads me to the articles in this issue. I think of these articles as related, as they are both world-building in their own ways.

Solo Setting & World Creation System: Rules for generating game worlds to adventure in, randomly from nothing. This includes creating the genre and style of the setting, and a detailed history.

Make Your Own Elements Meaning Tables: Ideas and suggestions for assembling your own, custom-built Elements Meaning tables specific to your adventuring needs.

I had a lot of fun writing both of these articles. I enjoyed the world creation system so much that if I'd had the time, I would have made a second Big Example. But then, I've always loved digging into the big picture details of game worlds. Love the lore :)

The second article, on custom Meaning tables, is describing how I go about table creation. Everyone's going to approach making tables in their own way, but I hope you can glean some useful bits from this article that you find interesting.

Happy adventuring!

Wow, that sounds like a very cool setting :) I'm glad you had such a good time with it, thank you so much for posting this! I like that kind of setting, too ... Bronze Age style.

I have GMed and did homebrew game writing for literally decades, and I think I just made the best setting history I have ever written using MM38 history building system. I can't wait to solo play it or maybe even dust off my GM hat and run it 1 on 1 for an interested party. This is now a permanent tool in my GM tool box as well as my solo tool box. If you are at all curious it was a Primal stone/bronze age game, with lots of ancient fallen civilzatoins to plunder in the wilderness. It will be great for hex crawls and dungeon delves, and has a robust society life that can even handle bronze age urban adventures. It took about two run ups till I figured out what I was doing, but I would say the whole process, using nearly all the boxes, took about 2 hours. Two very fun hours.

I'd also like to point out that the cover art has an easter egg to it. Can you identify it? :)

Tana Pigeon

Ohh, I can totally see that. Wrestler Names, Signature Move, Wild Stunt.

Excited to check this out. I play a Pro Wrestling RPG and it's be fun to build an Elements table for that. Thanks!
