The Fate Check in 2e

Greetings Tier 3 Mythicists! I have a Random Event for you ... a preview of how the Fate Check works in Mythic GME Second Edition. You can download the 2 page PDF here.

The Fate Check from Mythic Variations 2 is going to be included in the 2e book as part of the core rules. However, the Fate Check system has been overhauled. I think it works better and more elegantly.

The percentage chance of getting a Yes answer very closely matches the 2e Fate Chart (which is a little different from the original, a bit streamlined). I think in nearly every circumstance the chances match up between 0-5% points.

This version of the Fate Check also only requires 2 dice, not 3.

It works with the Chaos Factor at its full 1 to 9 range.

Random Events are generated in the same way as with the Fate Chart, by rolling identical numbers that are within the Chaos Factor value.

About the only difference between this Fate Check, and the Fate Chart, is you are a little more likely to get Exceptional results when dealing with the highest end modifiers (+/- 5), and Random Events are a little more likely with No answers although not by much.

If you try this out in your games, please let me know what you think! If you already play with the current Fate Check, I think you'll like how this version compares.

Happy adventuring!

I'm trying this out in my solo play of City of Mist and I love it so much! I have a question, though, which is unrelated to the specifics of the chart itself: are we allowed to talk about this publicly? I like to include my rolls in my play-through when I post them. Wouldn't post the chart as is, but it'd be pretty easy to gauge once I start posting the rules on my blog as I play.

Hi Bobby. That's a good question, and I'm glad you asked it. It gets to one of the problems with the original Fate Check. On early drafts of the Variations 2 Fate Check I had exceptional results happening when you rolled 18+ or 4 and under, or something along those lines. The problem with that is Exceptional results become very common with extreme Odds or extreme Chaos Factor. My solution to that problem was coming up with the odds/evens dice mechanic of the original Fate Check and limiting the Chaos Factor to a smaller range (the CF was limited because, once again, extreme Odds and CF values gave some wonky outcomes). This version of the Fate Check fixes that problem a different way, by limiting Exceptional results to a finite range: 2-4 and 18-20. This limits how high the probabilities can get for you rolling an Exceptional, keeping them closer to the Fate Chart. When Odds or the Chaos Factor are extreme, you still have a higher chance of getting an Exceptional, but not nearly as high as with the older Fate Check or if it were something like 21+.

One thing that I noticed when I first read this, and has now come into play, is the way exceptional yes/no is handled. I am not experienced enough to understand why, for instance, a 21+ is not an Exceptional Yes and just a regular Yes. In my current game I used this and asked a question. CF 5 (+0), Sure Thing +4. So I have a total to +4 to my roll. So if I roll a 14, 15, or 16 on 2d10 it is an Exceptional Yes, but if I roll 17, 18, 19, or 20 (numbers that would otherwise be great for getting a yes) I do not get an Exceptional Yes. I actually rolled a 17 and for a total of 21 and missed the Exceptional Yes. It feels very strange that the better you roll doesn't mean as much.

Boundless hype! Groovy :)

Tana Pigeon

I love this. Its definitely more intuitive now and my hype for 2e knows no bounds.

Sam

Love it. Thankyou!

I've always used the Mythic Variations II Fate Check, but was a bit bummed out by the compressed chaos factor range. I'm loving the look of this and can't wait to try it out :D Looking forward to 2e when it drops!

Mattybee

I'd love to hear your thoughts on how it feels in actual play!

Tana Pigeon

I absolutely love this, a lovely improvement on the Fate Check!

I always like the Fate Check better than the Fate Chart. This makes version makes more sense with how it handles exceptional results. I also like that it now uses the Fate Chart's full range of Chaos Factor. As I am also Herolover12 on reddit I will be using this immediately as Seto and MIG explore the rest of the station.

This version of the Fate Check is just meant for the GME, so it doesn't take Ranks into consideration. However, the rules in MM#13 about adapting Ranks to the Fate Check should still work the same with this version of the Fate Check as it does with the one from Mythic Variations 2.

Tana Pigeon

This is amazing 2e sounds simple yet effective so far! I'm happy that the exceptional results made it into this simple check as they weren't there in the magazine version!

Dasher

Tried it randomly as I waited my PC to compile a new version, and I definetely love it! It won't take long to memorize it even. I think I will be using it already :) Quicker, more intuitive, elegant. Mythic 2e will be insta-buy for sure!

How will this work with resisted questions?
