Primal Quest and licensing

Hello Tier 3 people! I am seeking your advice and input on something.

I've been asked by the creator of the RPG Primal Quest to collaborate with him in making solo rules for the system. I am considering it, although working a new project into my existing schedule is daunting.

What are your thoughts about this?

And while we're on the subject, what are your thoughts more generally on me encouraging licensing out Mythic for others to use in their games? This topic comes up sometimes. I haven't taken the idea on because it's sat on the backburner out of time constraints. However, with Mythic Second Edition in the works I am thinking of including licensing language in the book.

Licensing Mythic has always seemed a bit strange to me, since so many others have come up with their own oracle systems. The basic concept of Mythic is quite simple, so it's not a stretch for others to emulate it in their own way. However, if some designers used Mythic in their own books as the solo engine that would help promote Mythic, which may be especially good for the second edition coming out.

What are your thoughts on both of these? Thank you :)

After Mythic GME 2e and Mythic RPG 2e are out I plan to offer a licensing policy. I'm still working on what that will look like but it will be heavily influenced by Mythic RPG 2e.

Do more licensing

Hello, I just joined. A simple compromise that would probably benefit both would be for you to offer to let him license it for free but credit the game as "powered by the mythic role-playing system", and maybe create three or four random tables customized for his setting. That way it's not a big impact on your existing schedule, but it adds legitimacy to his new project, and advertises your system.

I agree. I only have so much time, and 2e needs to be the priority. That, and I have the monthly magazine and the occasional MM Compilation. I think after the 2e books are done, I can look at collaborations like that.

Thank you for the link, Craig :)

My suspicion is it would delay Mythic 2e which, selfishly, I am not keen on. Having Mythic 2e would help me play any RPG solo, not just Primal Quest. I'm all for licensing it out but, being honest, I would prefer you to prioritise 2e.

"I'm ignorant of the requirements or burden this might put on you, though" That's mainly what has made me hold off on doing this so far. It sounds straight forward enough, but I really don't know what it entails or if there are any hidden pitfalls.

The number of items on my plate is the big limiting factor. As a one person operation I'm hard pressed to get things out on a timely basis.

Thats an awesome thing! Licensing mythic can make it grow, also having a fan license to non commercially distribute stuff based on mythic. And as a brazillian i would love to see mythic licensed and localized around here :)

I am very much about open licenses like the Creative Commons license. I think that's one thing that has held Mythic back from being adopted in the same way that Fate and Forged in the Dark were adopted (both systems had explicit license, unlike PbtA which had a very "as long as the Bakers are happy you're cool" license. Perhaps something like a text-only license would work. You can learn more about Creative Commons licenses and how to apply them here: https://creativecommons.org/share-your-work/ Regardless, this is exciting news. Thank you.

I think it's a great idea. Not only would it promote the system, but it would continue the idea started with the magazine of expanding the scope of the rules for more advanced/nuance solo play. I could see it working out the way the PbtA ruleset has - a million ways to use the rules to do what you like.

I would say it might be worth revisiting once mythic 2 is released. Your mind may change once you get everything from your creative properties in full and out there for everyone. They may even just say "heyyy we'll just adopt what you've already made here!".

If you can give the time to do it appropriately, go ahead and put that language in. As long as it is fair, you only stand to gain by it.

My gut reaction to the collaboration is that it sounds potentially fun, and I'm glad to hear that you have been asked to contribute more to the solo roleplaying world. However, I think not overextending yourself is most important. If it were to be something that's profitable for you, then you should take that into consideration, of course, but it's far too easy to jump into something that ends up being a drain on time that we'd rather was spend elsewhere. Regarding the licensing, I don't see a reason to avoid it. If it means that more games might more readily accomodate a solo or improvisational approach to play, it's hard for me to see the downside. I'm ignorant of the requirements or burden this might put on you, though. Hopefully you can get some feedback from others more knowledgeable in this area.

Guess it would depend on what you currently have on your plate, the level of effort needed from your end, and the "What's in it for Mythic?" Will this further your short/long-term goals for Mythic?
