Progress Journal, Sept. 9, 2021 - AMA

This is less of a Progress Journal, and is more of an Ask Me Anything thread. I asked a month ago about doing one of these, and I got a lot of people saying "Do it!" so here I am doing it :)

Go ahead and ask me anything! It can be about Mythic, or about solo role-playing in general, it can be something personal you're curious about, or whatever you like.

This is the first time I've ever done something like this so go gentle on me lol I'll answer every question, but apologies ahead of time if I am sometimes slow to respond.

And I promise not to use Mythic to answer your questions :)

What you just described is something I love about solo role-playing. You're just going about your day, and an idea springs to mind about an adventure you're currently running and you're excited about it. For myself, I will usually consider the idea a potential and test it with Fate Questions. Like with your symbiote, maybe you start asking questions like "Has this character been acting a little strange lately?" I try to resist the urge to just go with the idea as I don't want to completely take over my adventure. So even if I really like it, I will see if it actually happens. This is part of the tension of solo role-play as I see it. Kind of like if you're watching a movie and you really hope that such and such is true, but you have to wait and find out if it is true or if something else is going on. As for how often to roll, let's clarify what "least amount of time" means. I would say check your oracle for anything you aren't already sure of that's important. So, that would seem to indicate rolling a lot, or at least asking a lot of questions. You don't have to check for everything, if something makes sense that would happen and isn't hugely important to the adventure then I probably wouldn't bother checking. As far as when you actually start asking questions about something, this is when I would suggest rolling as little as possible. My usual advice is to try and answer anything with only one or two questions, and using interpretation to go from there. There is a tendency sometimes to keep asking questions to narrow down something, when you really don't have to.

I think the first software version of Mythic rules that I can remember was about 15 years ago, and there have been a lot more since. I don't use them so I wouldn't want to comment on them, but I'm aware that many Mythic players find them very useful.

Thank you for the thank you, James :) I will see if in a future post here I can post some Scenes I run in Call of Cthulhu. I don't have anything handy right now since most of my games lately I haven't been writing anything out, just playing it all out in my head, but this sounds like a good reason to start a new CoC adventure and get back into writing them down :)

Before I made Mythic I used tarot cards for solo role-playing. My frustration with how slow it was to use tarot card interpretation is one of the things that lead me to Mythic. Still, I found the tarot extremely inspiring and the Event Meaning lists were largely derived by studying tarot cards. I love tarot cards, and I've been doing readings for people for 30 years. I think using tarot would be compatible with Mythic, although I think the problem of slowness of interpretation is still an issue.

I'm not sure what that means, but if you mean do I not use apps in my solo play then you would be correct. I'm not against using apps, I just prefer doing it with pen and paper.

For this, I can happily say no. And I say "happily" because I've been fortunate enough to be able to tackle my solo RPG aspirations. I can't think of any solo tools that would be useful that couldn't be created, and if I did I would immediately want to try and create it anyway lol

Another three parter! lol Okay ... 1) I pretty much always have a Mythic game going. I tend to drag them out, where I play for a bit, then not play a few days, then play it some more. This is one of the things I like most about solo play, I can play the adventure for as long or as short a time as I like. I can walk away whenever I want and then come back whenever. So in this sense I always have a game going, and even if I'm not playing on a day I'm thinking about what to do next.

Tana Pigeon

Oooh, a three part question. Okay, part a ... My favorite RPG is probably Call of Cthulhu. I've been playing it since first edition and it has never gotten old for me.

Being new to solo role-playing it's not exactly clear to me yet when I roll an Oracle (or any other kind of table) and when I don't. For example, in my sci-fi solo game, while not even playing my game (I was watering my garden), out of the blue a cool idea hit me that a companion of my character looks human, but actually has been taken over by some sort of ancient alien symbiote. So...do I just go with my idea because I like it? Or do I roll for validation on the Fate Chart (with a low Chaos Factor? A high Chaos Factor?) because maybe that will guide me to something even better and more unexpected? There's advice on the internet and for other systems/products to roll your Oracles the LEAST amount of times you can which conflicts with some who say you should roll for EVERYTHING! What's your advice here for a newbie?

Having used fan-made Mythic GME software, I wonder. Do you endorse or promote a software version of your creations and rules?

Cauldron of Bats

Yes I have, and I really enjoy it. It's sometimes a blurred line for me what constitutes playing a solo RPG and what's fiction. A lot of my solo games are written in novel format, with each chapter being a Scene, as I play it. So is this fiction or is this an RPG? I guess both. Some of those I heavily use the RPG rules while I play/write, and some I only use Mythic, so maybe that latter category is closer to straight up fiction writing. I probably have a couple hundred of these in a folder on my computer. The majority of them are not completed stories/adventures since a lot of the time I'll start an adventure and carry it as far as I want then lose interest and go on to another one. There are some, however, that I really fell in love with and essentially became novels. Unfortunately, you can't find these anywhere public. If I were to ever publish any of this as fiction I would want to edit it heavily into a more polished, finished form. I don't see that happening any time soon. I did write and publish a novel years ago under the Word Mill Games banner. It was my foray into fiction writing and it flopped lol That wasn't using Mythic, however. Since you asked this question, John, I have to ask you, do you write fiction using Mythic? :)

Tana Pigeon

Oh my goodness, so many questions! We have released the Kraken! lol I love it :) Keep them coming. I want to give each one a thoughtful answer, so it will take time to answer them all, but I'm already enjoying this :)

Could you possibly publish a scene (or 2) using mythic materials for the Call of Cthulhu RPG or Apococthulhu specifically. I am really interested in how you would go about creating and then playing out the scene (s). I love reading the "adventures" created by various solo publishers of your mythic materials and I really want to say thank you for providing for this type of outlet.

James Traver

Have you ever used tarot cards or rune castings to inform the next step in your solo play, for example in place of rolling for Action and Meaning? Would that be compatible with Mythic?

Sam

Are you, to quote Geek Gamers, an App-avoidant soloist?

J.Tim

:D Is there any solo tool you'd like to see/create but for whatever reason cannot be created.

Stargolem

Yay questions time! 1) How often do you play mythic yourself? (Solo or with others) 2) What do you like to do for fun when your not creating RPG content? 3) Do you have a favorite work of fiction that inspires your content (example: anime, super hero comics, martial arts movies)

Dasher

Have you ever used Mythic to write fiction, and if so, where can I find the result? 😊

John

a) What's your favorite roleplaying game (apart from Mythic)? b) Please, tell us about the solo rpg session / campaign that you have enjoyed the most in your solo gaming. c) Please, tell us about your favorite rpg character from your solo gaming sessions.
