Mythic Magazine #6

Greetings everyone! Attached is Mythic Magazine #6.

This issue contains an article on how to incorporate satisfying mystery adventures into your Mythic campaigns. This was a challenging one to write given how complicated mysteries can get. However, this was also very satisfying; I've wanted to address mysteries in a deeper manner ever since Mythic Variations came out. Now I feel like that's been done. I hope you enjoy the result!

The second article is a short discussion on how to use Mythic to learn a new RPG. This is a light approach to simplifying a high-crunch game, allowing yourself to ease into it the more you play.

Happy adventuring everyone! :)

Thanks Bill :) I think the Mystery Matrix is one of those articles that has really stood up over time. I'd love to do a full book based on it.

I love this issue! I am always searching for ways to use this in every session.

This has been a lot of fascinating material to read through! I'm eager to try it out for myself. I'm wondering about a few edge cases with the new mystery system... One, do you have any suggestion for if there's a situation with multiple mysteries at once, which might be connected? I was wondering if I might handle that by, well, when just discovering suspects or clues, that would go as normal, but when picking at random, there might also be a "mystery list" to pick between which mystery, plus a "choose most logical" option? Or might that be taking things too far? Also wondering if there could be multiple culprits at once... would such scenarios be counted as a single "suspect" or be a result you could pick when there's a tie when you reach the clincher? Lastly, I'm curious how one would go about combining this with variant Random Event tables... like if you're using it with the Adventure Crafter, for example, that issue has a different Random Event table too, so it'd be necessary to merge them. Anyway, thanks for putting all this exciting material together.

Thank you, I'm glad you like it :)

It was pointed out to me in the Discord that there was a small, but confusing, error on page 7. The article says the Progress Points are similar to that found in The Adventure Crafter. That was the wrong Crafter. It should say in The Location Crafter. I fixed this in the file. If you'd like the updated version, please download the linked attachment again.

I love the fresh use of a graph mechanic. Tried something similar but different approach myself, but I have to say this approach is very elegant!

I'm glad you like it :)

The mystery stuff is low key mind-blowing! Thank you!

Alright just finished two runs so far. First was with 3 plot points already slotted and clinched at 3 and was done wayyyyy too quick as a test run. The second run was a wild ride where the murderer was the homeless beggar who framed the butler with his own knife and then got away with it because he sent the cab away from the house with him not in it so he could complete the murder

Awesome! I'm glad you like that it can be extended beyond what we normally think of as mysteries. I've been watching a lot of Star Trek Deep Space 9 lately. I'll see an episode and think, "That's a perfect plotline for a Mythic Mystery!"

Tana Pigeon

This mystery mechanic is a revelation. As you say in the article, there are uses for solving mysteries beyond the Knives Out variety. I think I'll be making heavy use of this!

I plan on trying it twice before letting her try (to make sure she gets my full understanding of it and there isnt as much mechanics looking up)

Please let me know how this goes, especially your wife's impressions. I think the opinion of a mystery fan who isn't super familiar with Mythic would be enlightening. Be warned, it may take a try or two to get a feel for this. It has an almost boardgamey feel to it, in my opinion.

Tana Pigeon

Awwww yessss, definitely reading this tonight and im going to get my wife to play this as well. Shes obsessed with mysteries and im obsessed with mythic so its two worlds colliding now!
