Status Report 2/2/2020

Hey all, Arfus and Ryhn here with another exciting update on the state of miniBoss's development! We've been hard at work since you last heard from us, and the next slice of the game, Tuesday, is steadily approaching completion. This leg of development has taken a bit longer than we originally anticipated.

This is due to three happenings. The first is soft rewrites for major Tuesday scenes, the second is an expansion on the number of gallery art pieces for the day, and the last is surgery of the Arfus fixing variety! (He's fine now, his belly button is once more an Innie! ( Gross. ) )

That said, we do want to keep those of you who aren't peeping the Discord server updated with the state of development!

Art

Freya - We've been hard at work on our resident junior accountant, and have completed two unique gallery sequences for her on Tuesday, spanning seven different illustrations and alts. Gallery art a character does not make, however. Freya's sprite is also completely done, along with a collection of expressions. We may still expand her range of emotion as development continues, but she's got the stuff she needs for now!

Nillson - The head of the accounting department has been coming along great, too. His office has seen a nifty alternate design with a ton of personality, and his in-game sprite is completely done. This little bunny is chock full of surprises, and we're excited for you to get to know him!

Backgrounds - Arfus has been toiling away in a pitched battle with his grand nemesis: the background layer. His sword for slaying this beast continues to be sharpened, and his slicing action (as seen on TV) only grows more devastating by the day!

Minigames

What is Kylie doing? Hailing a cab? Taking mime classes? Holding a door? Find out when you play through Tuesday! (WIP)

This mystery minigame has 7 fun illustrations of Kylie packed into it, all of which are completely done! Woo! The coding for this little experience is prototyped, and Ryhn will be digging in to it as soon as we reach where it occurs in the story! Fun times will be had.

Story

The story is really shaping up! After our last-communicated clean up of the narrative, we've been confidently pushing forward, writing another twelve pages of script for Tuesday! We've got most of it in the game now, but haven't hooked up all of the reactions, animations, and transitions that support them. It's going well, and we make progress consistently, week over week. There's a lot of fun stuff in there, but we wont go into detail because spoilers are the literal worst. ♥

Coding

This segment is where we have to tell, not show, because staring at code is an exercise in self-flagellation for most sane humans and floofs. Ryhn's been pluckin' away at his keyboard thing and sometimes the swirl of letters, numbers, and colors Arfus blankly stared at on his screen come together to form a cool thing!

One such cool thing is a new Hyper mode. When turned on, instead of talking moving a character's lips, it instead changes their POSE! Super lively animations abound, imparting even more visual personality into our characters. This new tool allows for some really cool visuals at key story moments, without needing to drop down into an animatic.

Another fun feature that has come from popular demand is a Scene Select! When the next build comes, you'll be able to hop to whatever moment in the story you'd like, provided you've reached that section of the game in the past.

Otherwise, Ryhn has just been bug smashing, and taking care of porting all of our content into the game engine, alongside his work on the minigames themselves! Busy bun, but he's staying strong and charging on!
