Movie Night! Reacting to "Beautiful Thing" (1996)

Our May movie night is "Beautiful Thing" (1996)

"Shy Jamie (Glen Berry) and athletic Ste (Scott Neal) are teen boys who live near each other in the London projects. Both boys think they could be gay, and finally explore their feelings when Ste is allowed to stay over at Jamie's place after an incident with his abusive father. There, the boys grow close and open themselves up to the idea of homosexuality, while Jamie's caring mother, Sandra (Linda Henry), and quirky teen neighbor, Leah (Tameka Empson), offer much needed emotional support."

So happy you reacted to this movie! love it for years. i think you should react to "Jongens (boys) from 2014, i think you would love it too

Yuval Shoval

Thank you so much for reacting to this film! I hadn't seen it in years and I forgot how wholesome it was and fell in love with it all over again. I also realized I've been confusing this one with another film called 'Get Real' that is also British and coming of age around the same time period. 'Get Real', 'Beautiful Things', 'C.A.M.P', and 'Noah's Arc' were some of the first queer media I found online growing up.

I was living in London when this movie came out. The untold under-story here is that Section 28 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Section_28) was still in full effect when it was made. Also: Weekend (2011)! I'll keep pushing it.

another feel good movie with a happy ending is Freak Show 2017 The film explores a close relationship between a very out flamboyant high school-er with a straight football jock. here's a link to the you tube trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drg74wOy8z8 the trailer has over a million views.

This movie brought me back to a time where I first saw the film in Amsterdam. during the 1998 Gay Games in an outside amphitheater. I was with my husband and we sat next to a cop as we smoked a joint.A non issue there. The people watching the movie with us were awesome friendly people from all over the globe. Anyway that's my first memory of seeing Beautiful Thing. Lots of smiles and happy memories. Sharing this film with you guys created another good memory. It's always a good time with anything you guys react to.

FYI Bubble & Squeak is usually made with Leftover potatoes and veg. All mushed together and fried so the potatoes hold it together

Thanks, it is a beautiful movie. I saw the play in the early nineties before it played the West End.

Btw, I also struggled with the dialect and accent so thankful for subtitles and rewind 😆

Hey boys!!! Thanks for taking my recommendation! Glad you enjoyed the movie!;

One of my favorite movies. Another 90's gem is The Sum Of Us. It's a Australian movie with a very young and fit Russel Crowe. It's based on a play. Also, a must see movie also based on a play is Torch Song Trilogy. It's a highly regarded film from the 80's.

Steven Jump

All very good movies (haven't seen perks).

I found it when I was in high school and I just loved it. It was one of the first queer films that I seen that didn’t have a tragic ending. If you liked this, then you would probably like Bonus Track. Also, bird was used as a derogatory term against women.

Luke

Loved the movie. You both seem like such sweet and genuine people. Adam is so sweet when there’s a loving or affectionate scene in a movie or show, and his smile is so cute 🥰.

This movie holds up so well. I discovered this movie years after it came out. In 1996 I was a teen dealing with so much self-discovery and I really wish I could have seen it at that time in my life. Hidden gem indeed. So glad you guys got to discover it. If you're looking for something different for another movie night, and you're up for some animation, you should check out Nimona. It's a great film.

DC

This movie is one of my favorites

John Dillon

Never heard of this movie, BUT it's reminiscing of the 90's. I was a little child then, however I remember the fashion, music and homophobia 🤣🤣 still very nostalgic

Great choice for movie night, guys! I remember seeing this when it came out and honestly haven't watched it since. It was great rewatching it with you after all these years. Here are some more movie night suggestions--staying on queer themes in the '80s and '90s in the UK: My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) starring a very young Daniel Day-Lewis Maurice (1987) A period piece based on the E.M. Forster novel with Hugh Grant The Lost Language of Cranes (1991) A very obscure title, but one of my favorite films of the era. By the way, I continue to be impressed with your knowledge of music from other eras. The fact that you know Mama Cass and even know the lyrics to her songs? Fabulous.

Scott aka Blue62

I had forgotten how emotional this movie was. Thanks guys. And I had forgotten the Mamma Cass connection!

Dennis Verner

That was so sweet. Bubble and squeek is a dish of potatoes and cabbage. Named for the sounds it makes as it cooks.

Beck Huston

Here are some movie suggestions for you guys... Latter Days (2003) Shelter (2007) Pride (2014) The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) Handsome Devil (2016) Firebird (2021) In from the Side (2022)

Joe Lancaster

What a pleasant surprise! I love this movie and was just looking for something to watch. What timing, thanks guys! 😊

Bubble and squeek: cooked potatoes and cabbage, mixed together and fried

Dennis Verner

hidden gem is the best way to describe this movie. so glad we had it recommended to us! 🥰🥰🥰

Bradam

I remember growing up when there wasn't much queer media, I found this gem and it has stayed in my heart forever.
