I cried so much the first time I watched this movie. And I cried many times again rewatching with you guys.

2025-07-20 07:05:25 +0000 UTCOne of my favorite recent films for sure. I do think Adam is supposed to be alive and merely "authoring" his envisioned past and future. However, I've seen some pretty decent arguments to question whether or not Adam might be dead and the high rise a sort of purgatory. The most important "clue" is the many references to building fires and Adam being "hot" (from his fever). And especially the conflagration he glimpses out his window. Anyway, love the movie regardless of my continued confusion regarding the plot. But now that you've watched it, you should also watch Weekend, by the same director, which is one of my all-time favorite films (I think it's even better than this one). A really small intimate film that explores some of the same subjects.

2025-06-15 07:21:06 +0000 UTCI’m really so happy watching queer people react to queer media because I feel like I’m always either alone or watching with someone that doesn’t have the same frame of reference a queer person has. This movie is one of my favorites and it makes me bawl every time, especially the scene with his father wishing he had comforted him when he was crying. For me the thing I love about this movie is that it’s yours to take from it what you will. Some people might have a more religious experience from it, some will have more of a psychological healing, but in the end it lets the viewer make up their own mind. To me it was a creative gentle boy making up his own story in his mind to cope, kind of like in Gaga’s Marry the Night when she mentions how she chooses to remember her own trauma in an artistic way. It’s why I feel like “there’s vampires at my door” was Adam filling in a traumatic moment with a song lyric that he truly loved.

2025-05-15 05:46:38 +0000 UTCGreat reaction to this thought provoking film! This was a second watch for me, as I saw it when it came out. I think the acting is excellent and the dialogue is beautiful between Adam and his parents as well as between Adam and Harry. It definitely hit home with some of the lines about how Adam felt as a gay child--you never really get over that stuff. It influences you for your entire life. I think, as with much in art, there are several possible interpretations of the plot, and that's OK. You hit on several possibilities. For me it had somewhat of a magic realism quality to it. I'm not sure we're meant to know exactly what the "right" interpretation is. Most importantly, you hit on the major themes, the most obvious to me being loneliness, and yes, of course, grief and childhood trauma as well. Overall a strong film, though my one complaint is the extremely darkly lit cinematography. I get they were going for a mood, but it was a bit too much for me. This was a great choice for your movie night!

2025-05-03 23:59:31 +0000 UTCThe ending is explained well, if you google it. I will not write about it yet here, because probably not many have yet had the time to watch it with you. However, when I first saw this, I also did not quite get it. But yes, to me there are two stories running parallel. His history and his hopes for future. Also, annoyingly the subtitles immediately mentioned DAD and MUM when they first came on screen. In Finnish subtitles only the dialogue was translated, so it took me much longer to realize that those were not his brother/sister and in-law or some uncle/aunt. To me that is a little bit of an unnecessary thing and reveals too much too soon.
