Bambi sat on the edge of the narrow bed in the wooden lodge guest room, his hands trembling as he gazed around at his surroundings. The room was small and cozy, with wooden walls and a high, sloping ceiling. A small window on one wall let in a sliver of sunlight, casting a cold, moonlit glow across the room. The floor was covered in a woven rug, its colors faded and worn from years of use.
The bed, although small, was surprisingly comfortable. Cleo had clearly taken great care in preparing the room for him, fluffing the pillows and tucking in the sheets neatly. Bambi couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude towards the stoic Alpha, who had taken him in and kept his secret safe for the past few days.
But for now, he sat alone in the guest room that Cleo had prepared for him, his mind racing with thoughts and fears. He couldn't believe that he had let his guard down and revealed his secret to Cleo. She was the first person who had found out after his sister, or was she the second since Apollo most likely found out about his Trait as well.
Bambi clicked his tongue, trying to find anything in the room to distract him from thinking about the conversation he just had with Cleo.
But, he couldn’t.
His voice shook. “Shit.”
He remembered Cleo’s stern warning, her words echoing in his mind. ‘If word of this gets out, every cove in the entire fucking world will be out to get you. You’ll be, or rather you already are the world’s greatest fucking treasure. Alphas will kill their mates to get a piece of you, and that’s only talking about the sane ones. The recluses, or other nut-jobs will experiment on you, they’ll tear you limb from limb with a scalpel to see if they can replicate what your Trait can do.’
“I can’t.” Bambi bit his lips, trying to think of a way to escape such a future.
In all honesty, he wasn’t too worried about Cleo finding out about his Trait, since if she wanted to spread it or capture him and abuse his ability, she would have done so, right then and there. Or rather, she already proved her maturity when she showed no desire in him even though he was a Male Omega, most likely the only one in this entire world and everyone knew about how possessive most Alphas were of their rare treasures.
“But this could all be a false pretense,” Bambi reasoned. He couldn’t rely on Cleo’s honesty when that could be fake. Everything could be fake.
Or, was he just paranoid now?
‘It’s better to be paranoid now, than to be optimistic and suffer later on’ Bambi thought inside his head.
As Bambi sat on his bed, he couldn’t help but to keep imagining the worst case scenarios. If Cleo or Apollo ever decide to leak his secret, he would become a target for rabid Alphas and their Betas, who would hunt him down for his ability. He could never live a normal life, always on the run, always in danger.
‘Kill them.’
Bambi gasped. Of course, there was always that option.
But then, a mental image of Cleo squashing the previous Wolves into meat paste, and Apollo’s lasering through a man’s head came back into mind.
Okay, so maybe there was no option.
So, currently what is the worst case scenario?
Bambi cringed. What if he was captured by that horny dog Alpha, Apollo? He shuddered at the thought, knowing that he would be at the mercy of someone who only saw him as a tool to be used.
But then, that would mean that Apollo would have to first find this location. But, THAT would mean Bambi staying here forever in this hidden town until Apollo died of old age because he knew that freak would obsess over him until death, especially since his secret was out. . .and Apollo was bitten so.
But, how could Apollo get bitten?
Now that Bambi thought about it, how was it possible for someone as strong as Apollo to get bitten by a Mutant?
No, he wasn’t in the situation where he should be playing detective right now. He needed to find a way to avoid Apollo when he got out, and also a way to get on Cleo’s good side just in case he needed something. On that note, he was already doing good since he just saved Cleo’s daughter, but even doing that only bought him a stay in this town.
And, her protection wasn’t guaranteed.
Bambi knew that he couldn't hide in Cleo's little town forever.
He still needed to achieve his primary mission.
He still had to find his older sister, the only family he had left in this post-apocalyptic world. He couldn't leave her alone, and he missed her more than anything.
“Emma. . .” He thought back to a year ago, before the world turned to shit because of that meteor strike.
Back when everything was normal, and it was just him and his older sister living together.
Emma had always taken care of him, cooking for him even though her cooking was terrible. . But he would always eat it with a smile, because it was made with love. He smiled at the memory, recalling all the goofy things they used to do together. He remembered all the things that they did together, the inside jokes and laughter that kept them going. It was a simple life, but it was a happy one.
And now, he was alone.
He missed her more than words could express. He hugged himself tightly, just the way his sister used to hug him when he was scared or upset. He whispered her name, longing for her to be here with him, to guide him through this terrifying situation.
“I'm scared,” Bambi confessed to the empty room. “I don't know what to do. I need you, sis. I can't do this alone.”
Tears welled up in his eyes as he realized the harsh truth. He was alone. He had no one to turn to, no one to protect him. But he couldn't give up, not now. He had to keep pushing forward, for his sister's sake.
Bambi couldn't hold back his tears any longer as he grieved over his sister. He wished he hadn't let go of her hand when they were running away from the Mutants. He blamed himself for her sacrifice, even though she had told him to run and save himself. She had taken his scent and led the Mutants in an opposite direction, giving him a chance to escape.
But Bambi couldn't help but feel guilty. If he had held onto her hand tighter, maybe she would still be here with him. Maybe they would have found a way to survive together. But now, it was too late, and he was filled with regret.
As he cried in the darkness of the room, Bambi he hugged himself, thinking of all the times his older sister would hug him the same way. How she would always tell him that everything was going to be okay, no matter what. But now, he couldn't help but confess to himself that he was scared. He didn't know what to do, and he needed his older sister to guide him.
But she wasn't here anymore.
Bambi made a promise to himself ever since he let go of her hand.
He would find a way to survive, to live on for his sister, to make her sacrifice worth something.
But most importantly, he would find her. He couldn't do it alone, and he knew he needed help. And, honestly speaking, if he could somehow utilize Cleo and her Cove’s power, it would make venturing out into the world and finding his sister a lot easier but how could he make such a plan come to fruition without getting squashed to death in one of Cleo’s barriers?
Then, as if God answered him, a knock on his door came alongside a sweet, innocent voice.
“Bambi, are you asleep?”
Bambi gulped. A light bulb appeared above his head.
