Chapter Twenty [Bambi's Omega Adventures In A Post Apocalyptic World]

Chapter Twenty: Bambi Understands How Rare He Is

Cleo couldn't believe what she was hearing. She stood in front of Bambi, the Omega boy with the ability to heal those infected by the Mutants. It was a trait so rare, it might as well be considered unique. Cleo couldn't fathom how Bambi came to possess such a powerful skill, but she knew one thing for sure – it made him a valuable target.

The revelation left Cleo stunned and speechless for a moment, before she finally managed to compose herself and respond to Bambi's nonchalant demeanor. She couldn't help but give him an incredulous look, eyebrows raised in disbelief.

Bambi thought that Cleo was joking, until he saw the 'Is this guy serious?' look at her face.

“Noone else can do that?” Bambi asked, lowering his spoon as well, his appetite momentarily forgotten.

Cleo thought to herself, trying to process everything she had just heard. She looked at Bambi with a mixture of disbelief and concern.

“How is this possible?” Cleo muttered to herself. Before she could say anything, she needed more information because if what Bambi was saying was true, then that would make him the literal hope of this new world.

More importantly, it was already unheard of for an Omega to possess a Trait, but now he was saying that his Trait could heal even those that were bitten/infected by Mutants? The very reason the world was still stuck in this post-apocalyptic stage was literally because they still couldn’t find the cure to the infection brought about by the Mutants.

Sure, they had supowers now but what was that in front of a million Mutants who can add you to their undead army if you just accidentally got a slight scratch from them?

“Have you. . .Have you used this before? On anyone?” Cleo asked, her gaze solemn.

Bambi stuttered under that gaze. “N-No, not yet.”

Cleo’s gaze turned sharp. “Not yet?”

“We-well yeah, I might have to use it on myself again if I ever get bitten, you know,” Bambi said when he saw Cleo’s eyes widen slightly. “Yea-yeah, I was bitten once when the world just started falling into chaos. There was so much fear, and pain, confusion and I didn’t know where I was going and accidentally wandered off into a building full of Mutants with a couple other ‘survivors’.”

“I got bit twice,” Bambi said, shaking slightly. “I remember running off to a store, where I hid and fell asleep. My healing must have automatically kicked in then since the next day I woke up fine.”

“I didn’t even know that you could get infected until a few days later when I saw the other survivors turn into Mutants, whereas I was fine.”

Bambi finalized his story. “I tested if my theory was correct when I scratched myself with a Mutant Walker’s claw and healed it. Nothing happened to me.”

Now, Cleo didn’t throw away the possibility that Bambi could be lying, or that there were specific conditions to healing an Infection, but even then, if what he was saying was true, that changed everything she knew, changed everything anybody knew.

Those that were Infected had to be disposed of. Anybody infected would turn into a Mutant in a day. That was common knowledge.

Or, so it was.

But, to be able to heal someone of the Mutant infection was unheard of. It was a power that could save lives and potentially change the course of their world. Bambi had just become a target for many, including that power-hungry Alpha, Apollo.

Cleo let out a sigh. “Do you truly, truly understand the gravity of the situation you are in, Bambi?”

Bambi squinted his eyes. “Sh-Should I be?”

Cleo took a deep breath, before answering as calmly as she could. “If word of this gets out, every cove in the entire fucking world will be out to get you. You’ll be, or rather you already are the world’s greatest fucking treasure. Alphas will kill their mates to get a piece of you, and that’s only talking about the sane ones. The recluses, or other nut-jobs will experiment on you, they’ll tear you limb from limb with a scalpel to see if they can replicate what your Trait can do.”

“You’ll be locked, maimed, and experimented on so bad, you’ll wish that you were captured by that war-mongering brat,” Cleo whispered with a rush. “Since at the very least, you’ll only be made a wall-flower, or a living incubator to carry his pups.”

“Now, do you understand how fucked you are if the news get out?”

Cold sweat dripped down his back as Bambi finally understood the gravity of the situation. He could see the horrors that Cleo had told, reflected in her expression, and even more cold sweat dripped down his back as he realized the full extent of what Cleo was trying to express.

Bambi nervously ran a hand through his auburn locks, unsure of what to do or say in response to Cleo's quiet stare. After a few awkward seconds, he finally mustered the courage to speak up, trying to ease the tension with a joke.

“B-but, you'll protect me though, right Cleo?” He chuckled nervously, but Cleo's stare silenced him.

Cleo continued to stare at him silently, her thoughts unreadable as they raced through her mind. After a moment, she let out a sigh and spoke with a serious tone, her gaze unwavering as she met Bambi's eyes.

“I’ll do as I promised,” she replied, her voice firm and resolute.

But then, her expression softened slightly as she added, “But the moment my daughter’s life is threatened, I’ll have to let you go. Even if you are the savior of her life.”

“I’m sorry.”

Bambi's heart skipped a beat as the weight of Cleo's words hit him. He had always known that being an Omega in this dangerous world was a challenge, but now he realized just how much more vulnerable he truly was with this trait.

“I understand,” Bambi said, looking down at his previously colorful and delicious plate.

“Until then, you will keep your Trait an absolute secret,” Cleo continued. “You won’t have to worry about that brat spilling the beans. He’s possessive of his findings and secrets, but even then, we can’t take any chances.”

Bambi nodded. “I understand.” He repeated like a broken record.

Cleo let out a small sigh, her gaze somewhat softening as she stared at the depressive state of the little Omega. She pitied him, but then she had to be strict now with him if she didn’t want him to have a horrid, early ending. His happy-go-lucky attitude needed to be killed now.

Her thoughts raced. She still couldn't believe that an Omega with such a powerful gift existed. In a world where survival was the only goal, Bambi and his unique ability were like a shining beacon of hope.

“In this world where we never know when we are going to die, you are the greatest treasure given flesh.”

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to them, a mop of golden hair could be seen in the doorway, quickly disappearing as the owner of the hair ran away right as Cleo stood up to clean the dishes, telling Bambi to leave his dishes, assuring him that she would take care of them.

“Take your rest,” she commanded.

Bambi nodded silently, still trying to process everything that had just happened. He thanked Cleo for the meal and stood up, heading towards the guest room she had prepared for him but it didn’t look like he was going to have any sleep tonight.

“How can you curse such a person?” Cleo sighed, as she looked beyond her kitchen windows, at the sparkling, blinking stars and wondered if they looked a little red tonight.
