BEFORE I START, really, really sorry for not being able to post the past 2 days guys. But for that, I posted a rather long chapter for today, and well, it's pretty wholesome I guess. Enjoy!
Chapter Eighteen: Bambi’s Little Picnic Trip
Bambi couldn't help but smile as he stepped foot into the flower field. The vibrant colors of the surrounding flowers were dazzling in the fading light of the sunset, casting a warm glow over the entire field. He could feel the soft grass beneath his feet, tickling his bare toes as he walked further into the field.
It was a couple hundred meters from Cleo and Alex's home, and Bambi had made his way here at Cleo's invitation. She had spoken of this flower field with such admiration and wonder that he couldn't resist seeing it for himself. And now, as he stood in the middle of the field, he understood why.
The air was filled with the sweet scent of the flowers, an aroma that Bambi had never experienced before. He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply, savoring every moment. When he opened his eyes again, he couldn't help but be taken aback by the beauty that surrounded him.
The flowers stretched out as far as the eye could see, a sea of colors blending together in perfect harmony. The golden light of the sunset seemed to dance upon each petal, creating an otherworldly aura that enveloped the entire field. Bambi couldn't help but feel like he had stepped into a fairy tale.
But his attention was quickly diverted when he heard the sound of laughter. He turned to see Alex running around the field, her Super-Speed causing her to leave behind a blur of colors. She seemed to be in her element, her laughter ringing out like music in the serene ambiance of the flower field.
Bambi watched her, a gentle smile on his face. It was hard to believe that just a few hours ago, she was on the brink of death. He had fought alongside her and Cleo, using their powers to protect her from harm. And now, she was running around carefree, without a worry in the world.
He couldn't help but be in awe of her resilience. Not just physically, but emotionally as well. She had been through so much, yet she still found joy and laughter in the simplest of things. Bambi couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration for her.
He continued walking, admiring the beauty of the flowers around him. His fingers gently brushed against the soft petals, and he couldn't help but marvel at the way the colors seemed to blend together in perfect harmony. As he moved, he couldn't help but feel like a part of this field, like he belonged to this magical place.
Eventually, Bambi found a spot to sit among the flowers. He settled himself down, careful not to disturb the delicate plants, and closed his eyes, taking a deep breath of the fragrant air. He let the peacefulness of the field seep into his bones, feeling a sense of calm and contentment that he hadn't felt in a long time.
Bambi opened his eyes and was immediately greeted by the sound of Alex's laughter. His eyes followed the sound, and he saw her rolling around in the flower bed, her hair wild and free, and her face lit up with pure joy. It was a stark contrast to how she had looked earlier, pale and sickly, clinging to life. But here, in this field, she seemed to shine with life and vitality.
The setting sun cast a warm light over Bambi, highlighting his features and making him seem almost angelic. His auburn hair caught the light, reflecting a fiery red hue, and his pale skin glowed like the petals of the flowers. His serene expression and gentle smile only added to the image of an otherworldly being.
A fairy had descended.
Bambi thought back to the conversation he and Cleo had a couple hours back while Alex was still asleep, recuperating.
'She was choking on her own blood and you just stood there!' Bambi exclaimed, his eyes flashing with anger. 'How could you be such a terrible mother? How could you let your daughter suffer like that?'
Traces of his sister’s sad face flashed in his head. “Do you even know what it’s like to lose your family?!”
Cleo remained silent and stoic throughout Bambi's rant, her expression unreadable. And when he finally finished, she simply stared back at him with a sharp gaze.
'Sorry,' Bambi muttered, realizing that he had crossed a line. 'I didn't mean that. I just...I couldn't understand how you could let your daughter go through something like that.'
Cleo's gaze softened slightly as she replied, “It's exactly because I know what it's like to lose my family that I couldn't bear to look my daughter in the eyes as her life slowly passes by.”
“I’ve lost my husband in that way already,” Cleo closed her eyes, before re-opening them. “I can’t lose my daughter too.”
Bambi's anger dissipated as he could see the pain in Cleo's eyes. He felt a pang of guilt for accusing her of being a bad mother, especially considering she had suffered such a tragic loss.
“I-I'm sorry,” Bambi whispered, his heart sinking at the thought of losing his own family. “I didn't know...I had no right to judge you.”
There was a tense silence between them before Bambi spoke again.
“Then, what do you want me to do now? I mean, now that I've healed her, I've outlived my purpose in this town...Do you...Do you want me to leave?”
Bambi was torn. In all honesty, he didn’t want to leave. And, it wouldn’t be fair for Cleo to kick him out right after he just helped save her daughter, but he knew how the world worked.
It was wrong for him to show his full deck of cards, when his opponent had yet to reveal hers, but he couldn’t help it.
He needed to save Alex. His guilty conscience would kill him otherwise.
He looked towards the spot where Cleo had been standing, and then back at Alex's sleeping form on the bed. Part of him wanted to stay, to be there for Alex as a friend and support system. And besides, with Apollo on the prowl, it would only be a matter of time before the Alpha caught him if he was out there alone. But then again, another part of him, a part that he had been trying to ignore, told him that he had to leave since after all, his sister was still somewhere out there, lost.
Cleo stayed quiet for a moment, pondering Bambi's words before finally speaking again.
“No.”
Cleo shook her head. “I promised to keep you safe from that war-mongering brat, and I will. Until the time comes for you to leave. . .you can stay.”
Bambi felt a sense of elation at her words, as he realized that a small part of him had been hoping that she hadn’t kicked him out. But before he could say anything, Cleo got up and turned her back to him, her voice soft but firm.
“Besides, my daughter needs a friend.”
And with that, Cleo left the room, leaving Bambi and Alex alone.
He turned his attention back to Alex, who was still sleeping peacefully. Bambi let out a sigh, feeling overwhelmed by everything that had happened. “I really, really can’t deal with your mother.” He said out loud, knowing that Alex couldn’t hear him.
Back to the present, Bambi looked around at the field, he couldn't help but think that it was missing something. That's when he spotted Cleo, sitting a few meters away, her back against a tree, watching over her daughter with a protective eye. Bambi couldn't help but feel a sense of warmth and admiration for her. She had been through so much, and yet she still had the strength to care for her daughter with such love and devotion.
He stood up, brushing off his pants, and made his way over to her. As he got closer, he noticed the soft crinkles around her eyes, evidence of the hardships she had faced. But even with those weariness lines, she was still a breathtaking beauty, her blonde hair falling in loose waves around her face.
This was the first time he had gotten a good, full look of her face.
When Cleo noticed Bambi approaching, she simply nodded at him but Bambi could see the genuine smile that reflected off her eyes. Bambi couldn't help but feel a sense of warmth and acceptance from her. She patted the ground next to her, inviting him to sit down. And so, he joined her, grateful for her company.
Lost in his thoughts, Bambi didn't realize that Cleo had noticed him until she made her way over to where he was sitting. She sat down next to him, her gentle eye-smile still in place.
“It's beautiful, isn't it?” she said.
Bambi didn’t reply, as together, they watched as Alex continued to run around the field, picking flowers and chasing butterflies. Bambi couldn't help but laugh along with her, feeling the warmth of the sun on his skin and the sweet smell of the flowers surrounding them.
As the sun began to set, casting shades of pink and orange across the sky, Bambi felt a sense of peace and contentment wash over him. He looked over at Cleo, who was watching the sunset with a tranquil expression on her face. It was as if the world had stood still just for this moment, and there was nothing more beautiful than this.
But, what truly went through her mind was something that Bambi could never have guessed but something that he would experience very, very soon.
