[Salvos] 739. You Can't Be Serious, Right? (Removed for KU)

(Removed for KU)

Comments

"A ripple washed over the crimson ocean of Centinels" I wonder, is it a ripple just in the sense of a laola wave or is it something magical? Did the matriarch maybe survive by having her loyal spawn take some of the damage? Is her life tied to her brood?

Dragonmaster_42

I can't get over how outstanding the current chapters are! A while ago, I could kind of see the road to a resolution throughout a dozen chapters or so. Now I can kind of see where the next chapter will go, but so many things may or may not happen that it doesn't go beyond that! And whenever I re-read a line, I'm instantly hooked back into that tense speculation! Every chapter is something I absolutely look forward to! I feel the same excitement I feel when reading Salvos' stats, but sprinkled on an actual chapter! I feel like I have to think about every word multiple times to grasp what's actually going on! Great work, MelasD! I'm absolutely dying to read the next chapter!

Dragonmaster_42

Yeah, I had a feeling the delay is partly due to the story being at a point where too many plot points are being juggled at the same time. In which case, I'd actually recommend taking a break now, writing it all up to the end of the volume and releasing it then. As long as you communicate your intentions beforehand, nobody would mind. Better than having a mess to fix later. The problem is that we've come to expect a certain release frequency from you, which, when broken without notice, builds frustration. Especially considering we're paying to get these chapters. I recommend writing more than just "What thonk?" in every author's note. Maybe share a little of your state of mind with us, or like in this case, you could've written that you're taking your time to make sure all the pieces of the story go together and for us to expect delays. Just my ten bucks.

I appreciate the feedback. Personally, I didn't have an issue with anything you said, so don't worry. I think your complaints is valid, this chapter shouldn't have taken a week to write. Unfortunately, these last few chapters have been very very hard to write because I don't want to mess them up or accidentally retcon anything. I'll probably be able to post more per week once this arc is over.

MelasD

Hey man. Nice of you to respond. It's good to know more details for people like me who don't follow anything other than what gets posted on Patreon. Don't mind the haters too much (even though I'm kinda one of them). Do what you gotta do, but communicate clearly like how you did just now. Makes you feel closer to the readers. Maybe you do that on your Discord, but I ain't there. I hope what you continue working on next is Kara, since that's my preference. Since you're gonna pause anyway I'll stick until the end of this volume, but a bit of advice: Taking a vacation (if that's what you're doing) doesn't actually help with burnout at all. Most people report feeling worse once they are back to whatever made them take a vacation in the first place. The recommendation is to actually find something you're really passionate about and focus on that, even if you disappear for a while from the internet. There's a video by ThePrimeTime called My Burnout Experience that I quite like. It's from a programmer's perspective, but translates well into other fields. Maybe it'll help a bit.

You wrote an entire tirade to baselessly insult me and you regularly insult other readers and you’re calling my attitude abusive? Look in a mirror lmao

MelasD

"This is your final warning before I ban you from my patreon. " - don't bother, I'll do it myself. Supporting your abusive attitude has been feeling like a humiliation for quite a while already, and I have no taste for it.

1. I have no parasites attached to me lol i literally keep like 90% of my royalties for everything and all I do with my comics are for myself 2. I’ve said like 100 times since last year that I’m burnt out on Salvos but you can say I’m not burned out if you want 3. Patreon is like a fraction of my income, and I want to take a break from Salvos. In fact, the only reason why I still post Salvos despite being this burned out is because I feel obligated to do so because of the invested readers. I’m literally going to go on a 3 month patreon break and literally pause my patreon whenever I’m done with Book 14 because I am so tired of writing Salvos. 4. This is your final warning before I ban you from my patreon. Your baseless and nonsensical speculations and complaints about me only serve to demotivate me from writing which only affects other readers.

MelasD

:)

It's funny how I agree with 100% of your points but only to about 50%. Makes me want to argue with you, but at the same time it feels like unnecessary nitpicking.

"I'm not willing to attribute the delays to malice (i.e. trying to milk as much money as possible from readers). I think he simply spread himself too thin and is also burnt out." - he's not burnt out from writing Salvos, that's for sure. Also, the problem with Patreon isn't necessarily malice, it's narcissism. If you're getting paid regardless of what you produce, it becomes easy to believe that people there are a stupid, unthinking resource that's there to finance whatever be your whim at the moment, instead of keeping a hand at the pulse of the audience because they matter. I've seen how onlyfans girls talk about their "fans" - they call them "pay pigs", and I suspect that's what we are to Melas. We pay the money so he can finance his whims, and have low opinion of us because we stick around for it, and I suspect he produces the bare minimum of what we want to read when he sees the subscriptions declining. Also, I think he has parasites that are trying to piggiback onto his successful career in order to jumpstart their own nonexisting ones, and I think he confuses those for friends, as they advise him to basically waste his time, money and energy in directions of their own fancy. That all sounds quite terrible, but the pattern is quite obvious. He's partly the victim there, because I think he lost quite a bit of money on those things, and I guess he's exhausted from the vampires sucking his blood, but I can't say I'm sorry for him because he's stubborn and keeps repeating his mistakes.

Danijel Turina

I'm not willing to attribute the delays to malice (i.e. trying to milk as much money as possible from readers). I think he simply spread himself too thin and is also burnt out. I remember about a year or more ago he earned around 9K a month and was releasing chapters like a machine. Now it's down to around 6K and he barely does one a week. If he wanted to make more money on Patreon, he'd be doing whatever made him successful before. Admittedly, earning 6K a month for doing barely a thing also sounds great, so who knows. If we assume he's simply burnt out, then it makes sense why he switched focus multiple times this last while (while as in years). That's more or less a good solution, but it almost feels like he ran out of projects he's interested in tackling. Amelia was interesting, but had barely any Amelia in it. I personally lose interest when the MC is barely there and the focus is more on the surrounding cast. Especially when they're so bland. Kara was a good attempt at igniting his passion, but it seems to be semi-abandoned. Kara is actually more enjoyable to me than Salvos. Salvos seems like it's building up to the finale, but the slow release makes it feel like there's barely any progress. I actually checked the word count for recent and older chapters and the length seemed to be around the same. 1.4-2.2K words for a typical chapter with some special story heavy chapters getting around 3K+ words. Would be interesting to write a script to calculate it for the entire series and put it into a graph to see if there's a trend, but it's a bit hard to get a "clean" source. Either way, if I had to make a guess as to what is actually going on with Melas (the author), I'd say he's focused primarily on the production of the webtoons (for which I care not, since I kinda hate the long strip format), as well as just living his real life. Details about his life are sparse, but he at least doesn't seem to be a loner. I don't quite understand what the production of a webtoon entails for an author who's not drawing it, but that's probably a chunk of time. I also don't quite understand why he has so much trouble releasing physical books. Looking at the Kickstarter, it just seems that he's trying to make them into light novels. He should've gone with a traditional light novel publisher and bit the bullet on the upfront cost. Considering he spent (wasted, in my opinion) so much money on the webtoons, he could've produced way more paperbacks and captured the physical book collector market, which I'm a part of. I'll never buy the digital editions because they're worthless to me as a collector. But I don't mind spending around 20 euros per book as long as it's an actual book. Hell, I actually import Japanese light novels from Japan, which means around a third of the cost just goes to shipping. I'm sure I'm in the minority, but physical book buyers tend to not mind the cost as much. Also, it seems his books are only available whenever a Kickstarter campaign pops up. As a customer, I hate that quite a bit, since I can't just go to a site like Amazon and buy them at any point. You can't even recommend buying the books to a friend because they're practically never available. Anyway that's my rant. I mostly lurk, but I've been getting tired of the slow progress and needed to channel my inner tism. Lately, I've been putting some of the ongoing series I read/watch on hold to wait until their completion, and it's actually been helping me clear my mind. FOMO doesn't even trigger because I can convince myself that I'll read it once it's finished. So I'll probably stop reading Salvos when this membership expires. Won't even care if it ends on a huge cliffhanger. PS. I've been enjoying your tismy speculations for a while now, Dani. Keep up the good work. My only suggestion is that you learn to break up your walls of text into paragraphs. I sometimes get tired of them and just skip the whole thing. When the text is in paragraphs, you can get the gist of each paragraph in the first few words and decide how much attention you're willing to spend on it. It helps with speed reading and is just good practice.

Alexander Chaplin Braz

Yup. Those long delays are making it very difficult for me to maintain emotional investment in the series. For a while I tried to artificially keep interested by speculating long ahead, but I think Patreon is actually the problem, because he's being paid to waste as much time as possible on stuff nobody cares about, unlike the books, where he gets paid when he's finished so people can buy them, and it's obvious what sells so he's motivated to focus on that.

Danijel Turina

I can't believe THIS took a week to write... The edging is starting to really get on my nerves. Might just cancel my membership and forget about Salvos until it's completed circa 2027.

Alexander Chaplin Braz

As long as it's not Deadithe... :)

Danijel Turina

I'm afraid it's all the centinel. I mean, it's not impossible that Salvos rifts into the scene and deals with the problem at the last moment, but I'm afraid we lost Sally, and things look urgent. :(

Danijel Turina

Damn, that's why I hate suicidal attempts at solving big problems - if it fails, you are no longer in a position to finish the job, and this looked like it was missing just that tiny fraction of effort. :( Also, Salvos is taking so much time to respond, I'm starting to suspect something is wrong.

Danijel Turina

is anyone gonna mention that Sally might not be dead. I mean, there was a figure that seemed to be corrupted, and then it just kinda went away. sounds like a Sally realizing that she needs to be somewhere else rn

All Hail The Rise of Edex

Brandon14754

@Travis I think she'll get OP Grand Skill that transforms her into Archangel for a duration. Aside from that she'll just level several times and gain a few more skills.

Alexey Gladkich

A hybrid, I wonder if she’ll be up to the half way point between her level and ludex.

Travis Brown

That’s right Edith we not going to be used, we are the user. Also I knew the matriarch wouldn’t die so easily. One kamikaze technique wouldn’t finish her off especially if no damage was being accrued before hand lvl 200 up can’t be taken likely especially if all skill haven’t been shown yet

Travis Brown

Great chapter! I wonder if Edithe will undergo some physical changes too, it'd be interesting. Also, of course the Matriarch lives, smh smh smh smh smh smh. I knew she was going to live but I still hoped she wouldn't. Sally 😭😭😭

Azrie

Either really just said ‘I miss the part where that’s my problem’ on Ludex 💀

Bruhcus the first

Another great chapter, thank you Melas. Keep up the hard work, but be sure to rest.

Borys Wisniewski

Man! This tension! It's killing me! And whenever I get the impression things will fall into place, things get even more tense! I mean, the events are among my predicted scenarios, but it's has so much impact! The board is set! So many people are on the verge of death for like the last 10 chapters! Simply amazing!
