A silent floating hunter that hides nearly transparent in the shadows.. what could be worse? The bubble maw is a perfect example of how many creatures biologically adapt to life in the dungeon. They wait until the perfect moment to float above an unsuspecting victim and immobilize it with a thick oil-like substance.
This odorless tar is instantly absorbed into whatever it comes in contact with. Impossible to observe or study for more than a mere moment, it is unknown how the bubble maw's oil actually works. Whether it functions on magic or chemistry is universally decided as unimportant. The substance is so dangerous that any living being will be paralyzed immediately upon coming into contact with it, and it can penetrate clothing, metal, and even glass with ease. A victim of the oil will recover in several days. However this is more than enough time for the bubble maw to swallow and digest its prey whole. Worse still is that the bubble maw seems to be "aware" of the oil even at great distances, and they have been observed rushing to a victim as soon as the oil is disturbed by a living being.
It is highly advised to avoid them entirely as the bubble maw also possesses the ability to absorb magic and elemental energies, even going so far as to transform physically to harness and utilize said forces.
"...ambushed the devilish orb and struck it across the backside with plenty of flame, but it just sucked it right up! Never seen a bubble maw do that myself but I heard plenty of stories so I turned and ran. I didn't dare slow to look but the damned thing was glowing like a coal as it gave chase, casting my own shadow long in front of me. I was able to lose it but I got burns to remind me to stay the hell away from those things."
