If you've seen any of my comics in the past you probably notice how little dialog/text there is. I like to focus on the visual flow and composition first. Obviously the characters need to have conversations, but I like to tell the story within the drawings as much as possible. When i'm reading a really wordy comic it ruins my suspension of disbelief. I feel like the characters are talking out loud for the reader's benefit and it kinda ruins the immersion. I've seen a few comics that have well-drawn conversation scenes, but typically the art gets boring when people are just talking all the time. You just end up drawing characters sitting and leaning on things.
I like to imagine making a comic of a typical day from start to finish. There would be some dialog, but a lot of it would be me doing stuff without ever talking out loud. How would I draw a scene of me cooking while listening to music? Or grocery shopping? Comics are more dramatic and have more action than my typical day, but thinking about it this way helps me put it in perspective.
This is a simple page with only a handful of panels. I think it says all it needs to say without any dialog, but that might just be my own hot take. What do you think? Let me know!
Another hot take: I don't really like sound effects in comics. I think there are ways to suggest sound without writing "BANG" in big letters. Thoughts?
