Man, Episode 18 (first half of this episode) is my favorite episode of the whole series, maybe even anime in general. I first watched it back when I was struggling in college and contemplating changing my major, and Subaru's whole speech about giving up being hard, how he never did anything with his life, and how he hated himself hit hard as hell. I also like that it's not just wallowing in his self pity. He's challenged on it by Rem, and from here, he goes on to legitimately become a better person. It also subtly explains why Subaru seemed so gung-ho about being transported to another world in Episode 1. He hated his old life and who he was back then, so he jumped at the chance to basically get a redo. On the topic of Emilia, I've always felt like the moment he truly fell in love with her was when she allowed him to confide in her and cry his heart out while he was stressed out of his mind from trying to do everything right. To him, that was the equivalent of how Rem fell in love with Subaru when he went to all that effort to save her in the forest.
